Chapter Securing the Home Energy Management Platform

Recently, many efforts have been done to chemically functionalize sensors surface to achieve selectivity towards diagnostics targets, such as DNA, RNA fragments and protein tumoural biomarkers, through the surface immobilization of the related specific receptor. Especially, some kind of sensors such as microcantilevers (gravimetric sensors) and one-dimensional photonics crystals (optical sensors) able to couple Bloch surface waves are very sensitive. Thus, any kind of surface modifications devoted to functionalize them has to be finely controlled in terms of mass and optical characteristics, such as refractive index, to minimize the perturbation, on the transduced signal, that can affect the response sensitivity towards the detected target species

Securing the Home Energy Management Platform

Energy management in households gets increasingly more attention in the struggle to integrate more sustainable energy sources. Especially in the electrical system, smart grid systems are envisioned to be part in the efforts towards a better utilisation of the energy production and distribution infrastructure. The Home Energy Management System (HEMS) is a critical infrastructure component in this endeavour. Its main goal is to enable energy services utilising smart devices in the households based on the interest of the residential consumers and external actors. With the role of being both an essential link in the communication infrastructure for balancing the electrical grid and a surveillance unit in private homes, security and privacy become essential to address. In this chapter, we identify and address potential threats Home Energy Management Platform (HEMP) developers should consider in the progress of designing architecture, selecting hardware and building software. Our approach starts with a general view of the involved stakeholders and the HEMS. Given the system overview, a threat model is constructed from the HEMP developer\u27s point of view. Based on the threats that have been detected, possible mitigation strategies are proposed taking into account the state of the art of technology for securing platforms

Energy Management of Distributed Generation Systems

    Get PDF
The book contains 10 chapters, and it is divided into four sections. The first section includes three chapters, providing an overview of Energy Management of Distributed Systems. It outlines typical concepts, such as Demand-Side Management, Demand Response, Distributed, and Hierarchical Control for Smart Micro-Grids. The second section contains three chapters and presents different control algorithms, software architectures, and simulation tools dedicated to Energy Management Systems. In the third section, the importance and the role of energy storage technology in a Distribution System, describing and comparing different types of energy storage systems, is shown. The fourth section shows how to identify and address potential threats for a Home Energy Management System. Finally, the fifth section discusses about Economical Optimization of Operational Cost for Micro-Grids, pointing out the effect of renewable energy sources, active loads, and energy storage systems on economic operation

    Green public procurement of building

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou Green Public Procurement staveb – konkrétně budov - v prostředí Evropské Unie. Green Public Procurement lze chápat jako Šetrná veřejná správa [3] či Zadávání zelených veřejných zakázek [4]. Obsah práce zasvěcuje čtenáře do přístupu k zadávání environmentálně šetrných veřejných zakázek z pohledu České republiky a Vlámska – federativním regionem Belgického království. This diploma (master) thesis deals with the issue of Green Public Procurement of constructions – concretely buildings – in Europien Union area. Green Public Procurement can be understood as “a process whereby public authorities seek to procure goods, services and works with a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle when compared to goods, services and works with the same primary function that would otherwise be procured”. [1, p. 4] Sometimes it is just called Green purchasing. [2] The content of the thesis introduces readers to the approach to environmentally friendly public procurement from the perspective of the Czech Republic and Flanders - a federal region of the Kingdom of Belgium. The thesis has two main objectives. To inform and inspire a possible public builder on various ways of green public employer (owner of future building) and to draw attention to any deficiencies. The second, perhaps more serious, objective is to stimulate a discussion of the professional public, which would lead to better and more efficient Green Public Procurement

Secure Configuration and Management of Linux Systems using a Network Service Orchestrator.

Manual management of the configuration of network devices and computing devices (hosts) is an error-prone task. Centralized automation of these tasks can lower the costs of management, but can also introduce unknown or unanticipated security risks. Misconfiguration (deliberate (by outsiders) or inadvertent (by insiders)) can expose a system to significant risks. Centralized network management has seen significant progress in recent years, resulting in model-driven approaches that are clearly superior to previous "craft" methods. Host management has seen less development. The tools available have developed in separate task-specific ways. This thesis explores two aspects of the configuration management problem for hosts: (1) implementing host management using the model-driven (network) management tools; (2) establishing the relative security of traditional methods and the above proposal for model driven host management. It is shown that the model-driven approach is feasible, and the security of the model driven approach is significantly higher than that of existing approaches
