    Logarithmic Intensity Compression in Fluorescence Guided Surgery Applications

    The use of fluorescence video imaging to guide surgery is rapidly expanding, and improvements in camera readout dynamic range have not matched display capabilities. Logarithmic intensity compression is a fast, single-step mapping technique that can map the useable dynamic range of high-bit fluorescence images onto the typical 8-bit display and potentially be a variable dynamic contrast enhancement tool. We demonstrate a ∼4.6  times improvement in image quality quantified by image entropy and a dynamic range reduction by a factor of ∼380 by the use of log-compression tools in processing in vivo fluorescence images

    Adaptive tone-mapping transfer functions for high dynamic range video cameras

    For real-time imaging with digital video cameras, good tonal rendition of video is important to ensure high visual comfort for the user. Except local contrast improvements, high dynamic range (HDR) scenes require adaptive gradation correction (tone-mapping curve) that should enable good visualization of details at lower brightness. We discuss how to construct and control optimal tone mapping curves, which enhance visibility of image details in the dark regions while not excessively compressing the image in the bright image parts. The result of this method is a 21 dB expansion of the dynamic range. The new algorithm was successfully evaluated in HW and is suited for any video system performing HDR video compression

    Algorithms for compression of high dynamic range images and video

    The recent advances in sensor and display technologies have brought upon the High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging capability. The modern multiple exposure HDR sensors can achieve the dynamic range of 100-120 dB and LED and OLED display devices have contrast ratios of 10^5:1 to 10^6:1. Despite the above advances in technology the image/video compression algorithms and associated hardware are yet based on Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) technology, i.e. they operate within an effective dynamic range of up to 70 dB for 8 bit gamma corrected images. Further the existing infrastructure for content distribution is also designed for SDR, which creates interoperability problems with true HDR capture and display equipment. The current solutions for the above problem include tone mapping the HDR content to fit SDR. However this approach leads to image quality associated problems, when strong dynamic range compression is applied. Even though some HDR-only solutions have been proposed in literature, they are not interoperable with current SDR infrastructure and are thus typically used in closed systems. Given the above observations a research gap was identified in the need for efficient algorithms for the compression of still images and video, which are capable of storing full dynamic range and colour gamut of HDR images and at the same time backward compatible with existing SDR infrastructure. To improve the usability of SDR content it is vital that any such algorithms should accommodate different tone mapping operators, including those that are spatially non-uniform. In the course of the research presented in this thesis a novel two layer CODEC architecture is introduced for both HDR image and video coding. Further a universal and computationally efficient approximation of the tone mapping operator is developed and presented. It is shown that the use of perceptually uniform colourspaces for internal representation of pixel data enables improved compression efficiency of the algorithms. Further proposed novel approaches to the compression of metadata for the tone mapping operator is shown to improve compression performance for low bitrate video content. Multiple compression algorithms are designed, implemented and compared and quality-complexity trade-offs are identified. Finally practical aspects of implementing the developed algorithms are explored by automating the design space exploration flow and integrating the high level systems design framework with domain specific tools for synthesis and simulation of multiprocessor systems.     Design of Novel Algorithm and Architecture for Gaussian Based Color Image Enhancement System for Real Time Applications

    This paper presents the development of a new algorithm for Gaussian based color image enhancement system. The algorithm has been designed into architecture suitable for FPGA/ASIC implementation. The color image enhancement is achieved by first convolving an original image with a Gaussian kernel since Gaussian distribution is a point spread function which smoothen the image. Further, logarithm-domain processing and gain/offset corrections are employed in order to enhance and translate pixels into the display range of 0 to 255. The proposed algorithm not only provides better dynamic range compression and color rendition effect but also achieves color constancy in an image. The design exploits high degrees of pipelining and parallel processing to achieve real time performance. The design has been realized by RTL compliant Verilog coding and fits into a single FPGA with a gate count utilization of 321,804. The proposed method is implemented using Xilinx Virtex-II Pro XC2VP40-7FF1148 FPGA device and is capable of processing high resolution color motion pictures of sizes of up to 1600x1200 pixels at the real time video rate of 116 frames per second. This shows that the proposed design would work for not only still images but also for high resolution video sequences.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figure

    Visual saliency guided high dynamic range image compression

    Recent years have seen the emergence of the visual saliency-based image and video compression for low dynamic range (LDR) visual content. The high dynamic range (HDR) imaging is yet to follow such an approach for compression as the state-of-the-art visual saliency detection models are mainly concerned with LDR content. Although a few HDR saliency detection models have been proposed in the recent years, they lack the comprehensive validation. Current HDR image compression schemes do not differentiate salient and non-salient regions, which has been proved redundant in terms of the Human Visual System. In this paper, we propose a novel visual saliency guided layered compression scheme for HDR images. The proposed saliency detection model is robust and highly correlates with the ground truth saliency maps obtained from eye tracker. The results show a reduction of bit-rates up to 50% while retaining the same high visual quality in terms of HDR-Visual Difference Predictor (HDR-VDP) and the visual saliency-induced index for perceptual image quality assessment (VSI) metrics in the salient regions

    Methods for Improving the Tone Mapping for Backward Compatible High Dynamic Range Image and Video Coding

    International audienceBackward compatibility for high dynamic range image and video compression forms one of the essential requirements in the transition phase from low dynamic range (LDR) displays to high dynamic range (HDR) displays. In a recent work [1], the problems of tone mapping and HDR video coding are originally fused together in the same mathematical framework, and an optimized solution for tone mapping is achieved in terms of the mean square error (MSE) of the logarithm of luminance values. In this paper, we improve this pioneer study in three aspects by considering its three shortcomings. First, the proposed method [1] works over the logarithms of luminance values which are not uniform with respect to Human Visual System (HVS) sensitivity. We propose to use the perceptually uniform luminance values as an alternative for the optimization of tone mapping curve. Second, the proposed method [1] does not take the quality of the resulting tone mapped images into account during the formulation in contrary to the main goal of tone mapping research. We include the LDR image quality as a constraint to the optimization problem and develop a generic methodology to compromise the trade-off between HDR and LDR image qualities for coding. Third, the proposed method [1] simply applies a low-pass filter to the generated tone curves for video frames to avoid flickering during the adaptation of the method to the video. We instead include an HVS based flickering constraint to the optimization and derive a methodology to compromise the trade-off between the rate-distortion performance and flickering distortion. The superiority of the proposed methodologies is verified with experiments on HDR images and video sequences

    Multi-Modal Enhancement Techniques for Visibility Improvement of Digital Images

    Image enhancement techniques for visibility improvement of 8-bit color digital images based on spatial domain, wavelet transform domain, and multiple image fusion approaches are investigated in this dissertation research. In the category of spatial domain approach, two enhancement algorithms are developed to deal with problems associated with images captured from scenes with high dynamic ranges. The first technique is based on an illuminance-reflectance (I-R) model of the scene irradiance. The dynamic range compression of the input image is achieved by a nonlinear transformation of the estimated illuminance based on a windowed inverse sigmoid transfer function. A single-scale neighborhood dependent contrast enhancement process is proposed to enhance the high frequency components of the illuminance, which compensates for the contrast degradation of the mid-tone frequency components caused by dynamic range compression. The intensity image obtained by integrating the enhanced illuminance and the extracted reflectance is then converted to a RGB color image through linear color restoration utilizing the color components of the original image. The second technique, named AINDANE, is a two step approach comprised of adaptive luminance enhancement and adaptive contrast enhancement. An image dependent nonlinear transfer function is designed for dynamic range compression and a multiscale image dependent neighborhood approach is developed for contrast enhancement. Real time processing of video streams is realized with the I-R model based technique due to its high speed processing capability while AINDANE produces higher quality enhanced images due to its multi-scale contrast enhancement property. Both the algorithms exhibit balanced luminance, contrast enhancement, higher robustness, and better color consistency when compared with conventional techniques. In the transform domain approach, wavelet transform based image denoising and contrast enhancement algorithms are developed. The denoising is treated as a maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator problem; a Bivariate probability density function model is introduced to explore the interlevel dependency among the wavelet coefficients. In addition, an approximate solution to the MAP estimation problem is proposed to avoid the use of complex iterative computations to find a numerical solution. This relatively low complexity image denoising algorithm implemented with dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) produces high quality denoised images

    Subjective quality assessment database of HDR images compressed with JPEG XT

    Recent advances in high dynamic range (HDR) capturing and display technologies attracted a lot of interest to HDR imaging. Many issues that are considered as being resolved for conventional low dynamic range (LDR) images pose new challenges in HDR context. One such issue is a lack of standards for HDR image compression. Another is the limited availability of suitable image datasets that are suitable for studying and evaluation of HDR image compression. In this paper, we address this problem by creating a publicly available dataset of 20 HDR images and corresponding versions compressed at four different bit rates with three profiles of the upcoming JPEG XT standard for HDR image compression. The images cover different scenes, dynamic ranges, and acquisition methods (fusion from several exposures, frame of an HDR video, and CGI generated images). The dataset also includes Mean Opinion Scores (MOS) for each compressed version of the images obtained from extensive subjective experiments using SIM2 HDR monitor

    A comparative survey on high dynamic range video compression

    International audienceHigh dynamic range (HDR) video compression has until now been approached by using the high profile of existing state-of-the-art H.264/AVC (Advanced Video Coding) codec or by separately encoding low dynamic range (LDR) video and the residue resulted from the estimation of HDR video from LDR video. Although the latter approach has a distinctive advantage of providing backward compatibility to 8-bit LDR displays, the superiority of one approach to the other in terms of the rate distortion trade-off has not been verified yet. In this paper, we first give a detailed overview of the methods in these two approaches. Then, we experimentally compare two approaches with respect to different objective and perceptual metrics, such as HDR mean square error (HDR MSE), perceptually uniform peak signal to noise ratio (PU PSNR) and HDR visible difference predictor (HDR VDP). We first conclude that the optimized methods for backward compatibility to 8-bit LDR displays are superior to the method designed for high profile encoder both for 8-bit and 12-bit mappings in terms of all metrics. Second, using higher bit-depths with a high profile encoder is giving better rate-distortion performances than employing an 8-bit mapping with an 8-bit encoder for the same method, in particular when the dynamic range of the video sequence is high. Third, rather than encoding of the residue signal in backward compatible methods, changing the quantization step size of the LDR layer encoder would be sufficient to achieve a required quality. In other words, the quality of tone mapping is more important than residue encoding for the performance of HDR image and video coding
