The goal of the research was to develop best practices for image signal processing method for InSAS systems for bathymetric height determination. Improvements over existing techniques comes from the fusion of Chirp-Scaling a phase preserving beamforming techniques to form a SAS image, an interferometric Vernier method to unwrap the phase; and confirming the direction of arrival with the MUltiple SIgnal Channel (MUSIC) estimation technique. The fusion of Chirp-Scaling, Vernier, and MUSIC lead to the stability in the bathymetric height measurement, and improvements in resolution. This method is computationally faster, and used less memory then existing techniques

In spatial audio capturing the aim is to store information about the sound field so that the sound field can be reproduced without a perceptual difference to the original. The need for this is in applications like virtual reality and teleconferencing. Traditionally the sound field has been captured with a B-format microphone, but it is not always a feasible solution due to size and cost constraints. Alternatively, also arrays of omnidirectional microphones can be utilized and they are often used in devices like mobile phones. If the microphone array is sparse, i.e., the microphone spacings are relatively large, the analysis of the sound Direction of Arrival (DoA) becomes ambiguous in higher frequencies. This is due to spatial aliasing, which is a common problem in narrowband DoA estimation. In this thesis the spatial aliasing problem was examined and its effect on DoA estimation and spatial sound synthesis with Directional Audio Coding (DirAC) was studied. The aim was to find methods for unambiguous narrowband DoA estimation. The current State of the Art methods can remove aliased estimates but are not capable of estimating the DoA with the optimal Time-Frequency resolution. In this thesis similar results were obtained with parameter extrapolation when only a single broadband source exists. The main contribution of this thesis was the development of a correlation-based method. The developed method utilizes pre-known, array-specific information on aliasing in each DoA and frequency. The correlation-based method was tested and found to be the best option to overcome the problem of spatial aliasing. This method was able to resolve spatial aliasing even with multiple sources or when the source’s frequency content is completely above the spatial aliasing frequency. In a listening test it was found that the correlation-based method could provide a major improvement to the DirAC synthesized spatial image quality when compared to an aliased estimator.

Array Manifold Calibration for Multichannel SAR Sounders

This dissertation demonstrates airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sounder array manifold calibration to improve outcomes in two-dimensional and three-dimensional image formation of ice sheet and glacier subsurfaces. The methodology relies on the creation of snapshot databases that aid in both the identification of calibration pixels as well as the validation of proposed calibration strategies. A parametric estimator of nonlinear SAR sounder manifold parameters is derived given a superset of statistically independent and spatially diverse subsets, assuming knowledge of the manifold model. Both measurements-based and computational electromagnetic modeling (CEM) approaches are pursued in obtaining a parametric representation of the manifold that enables the application of this estimator. The former relies on a principal components based characterization of SAR sounder manifolds. By incorporating a subspace clustering technique to identify pixels with a single dominant source, the algorithm circumvents an assumption of single source observations that underlies the formulation of nonparametric methods and traditionally limits the applicability of these techniques to the SAR sounder problem. Three manifolds are estimated and tested against a nominal manifold model in angle estimation and tomography. Measured manifolds on average reduce angle estimation error by a factor of 4.8 and lower vertical elevation uncertainty of SAR sounder derived digital elevation models by a factor of 3.7. Application of the measured manifolds in angle estimation produces 3-D images with more focused scattering signatures and higher intensity pixels that improve automated surface extraction outcomes. Measured manifolds are studied against Method of Moments predictions of the array's response to plane wave excitation obtained with a detailed model of the sounder's array that includes the airborne platform and fairing housing. CEM manifolds reduce angle estimation uncertainty off nadir on average by a factor of 3 when applied to measurements, providing initial confirmation of the utility of the CEM model in predicting angle estimation performance of the sounder's airborne arrays. The research findings of this dissertation indicate that SAR sounder manifold calibration will significantly increase the scientific value of legacy ice sheet and glacier sounding data sets and lead to optimized designs of future remote sensing instrumentation for surveying the cryosphere

Detection Strategies and Intercept Metrics for Intra-Pulse Radar-Embedded Communications

This thesis presents various detection strategies and intercept metrics to evaluate and design an intra-pulse radar-embedded communication system. This system embeds covert communication symbols in masking interference provided by the reflections of a pulsed radar emission. This thesis considers the case where the communicating device is a transponder or tag present in an area that is illuminated by a radar. The radar is considered to be the communication receiver. As with any communication system, performance (as measured by reliability and data rate) should be maximized between the tag and radar. However, unlike conventional communication systems, the symbols here should also have a low-probability of intercept (LPI). This thesis examines the trade-offs associated with the design of a practical radar-embedded communication system. A diagonally-loaded decorrelating receiver is developed and enhanced with a second stage based on the Neyman-Pearson criterion. For a practical system, the communication symbols will likely encounter multipath. The tag may then use a pre-distortion strategy known as time-reversal to improve the signal-to-noise ratio at the radar receiver thereby enhancing communication performance. The development of several intercept metrics are shown and the logic behind the design evolutions are explained. A formal analysis of the processing gain by the desired receiver relative to the intercept receivers is given. Finally, simulations are shown for all cases, to validate the design metrics

As the demand for safety and convenience in the automotive-technology field increased, many applications of advanced driving assistance systems were developed. To provide driving information, among the sensors, such as cameras sensor, light detection and ranging sensor, radar sensor, and ultrasonic sensor, a radar sensor is known to exhibit excellent performance in terms of visibility for different weather conditions. Especially with the legislation of the adaptive cruise control system and autonomous emergency braking system in a global environment, the market of the automotive radar sensor is expected to grow explosively. At present, the development of cost-effective radar offering high performance with small size is required. In addition, the radar system should be enforced to have a simultaneous functionality for both long and short ranges. Thus, challenging issues still remain with respect to radar signal processing including high-resolution parameter estimation, multi-target detection, clutter suppression, and interference mitigation. For high-resolution parameter estimation, direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation method has been investigated to identify the target object under complex unban environment. To separate closely spaced target having similar range and distance, high-resolution techniques, such as multiple signal classification (MUSIC), the estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT), and maximum likelihood (ML) algorithm, are applied for automotive radars. In general, cycle time for radar system, which is the processing time for one snapshot, is very short, thus to establish a high-resolution estimation algorithm with computational efficiency is additional issue. On the other hands, multi-target detection scheme is required to identify many targets in the field of view. Multi-target detection is regarded as target pairing solution, whose task is to associate frequency components obtained from multiple targets. Under certain conditions, the association may fail and real target may be combined to ghost components. Thus, reliable paring or association method is essential for automotive radar systems. The clutter denotes undesired echoes due to reflected wave from background environment, which includes guardrail, traffic signs, and stationary structures around the load. To minimize the effect of clutter, conventional radar systems use high pass filter based on the assumption that the clutter is stationary with energy concentrated in the low frequency domain. However, the clutter is presented with various energy and frequency under automotive radar environment. Especially, under the specific environment with iron materials, target component is not detected due to clutter with large power. Mutual interference is a crucial issue that must be resolved for improved safety functions. Given the increasing number of automotive radar sensors operating at the same instant, the probability that radar sensors may receive signals from other radar sensors gradually increases. In such a situation, the system may fail to detect the correct target given the serious interference. Effective countermeasures, therefore, have to be considered. In this dissertation, we propose efficient parameter estimation methods for automotive radar system. The proposed methods include the radar signal processing issues as above described, respectively. First, the high-resolution DOA estimation method is proposed by using frequency domain analysis. The scheme is based on the MUSIC algorithm, which use distinct beat frequency of the target. The target beat frequency also gives distance and velocity. Thus, the proposed algorithm provides either high-resolution angle information of target or natural target pairing solution. Secondly, we propose the clutter suppression method under iron-tunnel conditions. The clutter in iron-tunnel environments is known to severely degrade the target detection performance because of the signal reflection from iron structures. The suppression scheme is based on cepstral analysis of received signal. By using periodical characteristic of the iron-tunnel clutter, the suppressed frequency response is obtained. Finally, the interference mitigation scheme is studied. Mutual interference between frequency modulated continuous waveform (FMCW) radars appears in the form of increased noise levels in the frequency domain and results in a failure to separate the target object from interferer. Thus, we propose a high-resolution frequency estimation technique for use in interference environments.Chapter 1.

Direction of Arrival Estimation and Tracking with Sparse Arrays

Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation and tracking of a plane wave or multiple plane waves impinging on an array of sensors from noisy data are two of the most important tasks in array signal processing, which have attracted tremendous research interest over the past several decades. It is well-known that the estimation accuracy, angular resolution, tracking capacity, computational complexity, and hardware implementation cost of a DOA estimation and/or tracking technique depend largely on the array geometry. Large arrays with many sensors provide accurate DOA estimation and perfect target tracking, but they usually suffer from a high cost for hardware implementation. Sparse arrays can yield similar DOA estimates and tracking performance with fewer elements for the same-size array aperture as compared to the traditional uniform arrays. In addition, the signals of interest may have rich temporal information that can be exploited to effectively eliminate background noise and significantly improve the performance and capacity of DOA estimation and tracking, and/or even dramatically reduce the computational burden of estimation and tracking algorithms. Therefore, this thesis aims to provide some solutions to improving the DOA estimation and tracking performance by designing sparse arrays and exploiting prior knowledge of the incident signals such as AR modeled sources and known waveforms. First, we design two sparse linear arrays to efficiently extend the array aperture and improve the DOA estimation performance. One scheme is called minimum redundancy sparse subarrays (MRSSA), where the subarrays are used to obtain an extended correlation matrix according to the principle of minimum redundancy linear array (MRLA). The other linear array is constructed using two sparse ULAs, where the inter-sensor spacing within the same ULA is much larger than half wavelength. Moreover, we propose a 2-D DOA estimation method based on sparse L-shaped arrays, where the signal subspace is selected from the noise-free correlation matrix without requiring the eigen-decomposition to estimate the elevation angle, while the azimuth angles are estimated based on the modified total least squares (TLS) technique. Second, we develop two DOA estimation and tracking methods for autoregressive (AR) modeled signal source using sparse linear arrays together with Kalman filter and LS-based techniques. The proposed methods consist of two common stages: in the first stage, the sources modeled by AR processes are estimated by the celebrated Kalman filter and in the second stage, the efficient LS or TLS techniques are employed to estimate the DOAs and AR coefficients simultaneously. The AR-modeled sources can provide useful temporal information to handle cases such as the ones, where the number of sources is larger than the number of antennas. In the first method, we exploit the symmetric array to transfer a complex-valued nonlinear problem to a real-valued linear one, which can reduce the computational complexity, while in the second method, we use the ordinary sparse arrays to provide a more accurate DOA estimation. Finally, we study the problem of estimating and tracking the direction of arrivals (DOAs) of multiple moving targets with known signal source waveforms and unknown gains in the presence of Gaussian noise using a sparse sensor array. The core idea is to consider the output of each sensor as a linear regression model, each of whose coefficients contains a pair of DOAs and gain information corresponding to one target. These coefficients are determined by solving a linear least squares problem and then updating recursively, based on a block QR decomposition recursive least squares (QRD-RLS) technique or a block regularized LS technique. It is shown that the coefficients from different sensors have the same amplitude, but variable phase information for the same signal. Then, simple algebraic manipulations and the well-known generalized least squares (GLS) are used to obtain an asymptotically-optimal DOA estimate without requiring a search over a large region of the parameter space

SAR tomography consists in exploiting multiple images from the same area acquired from a slightly different angle to retrieve the 3-D distribution of the complex reflectivity on the ground. As the transmitted waves are coherent, the desired spatial information (along with the vertical axis) is coded in the phase of the pixels. Many methods have been proposed to retrieve this information in the past years. However, the natural redundancies of the scene are generally not exploited to improve the tomographic estimation step. This Ph.D. presents new approaches to regularize the estimated reflectivity density obtained through SAR tomography by exploiting the urban geometrical structures.
