    The advantages and cost effectiveness of database improvement methods

    Relational databases have proved inadequate for supporting new classes of applications, and as a consequence, a number of new approaches have been taken (Blaha 1998), (Harrington 2000). The most salient alternatives are denormalisation and conversion to an object-oriented database (Douglas 1997). Denormalisation can provide better performance but has deficiencies with respect to data modelling. Object-oriented databases can provide increased performance efficiency but without the deficiencies in data modelling (Blaha 2000). Although there have been various benchmark tests reported, none of these tests have compared normalised, object oriented and de-normalised databases. This research shows that a non-normalised database for data containing type code complexity would be normalised in the process of conversion to an objectoriented database. This helps to correct badly organised data and so gives the performance benefits of de-normalisation while improving data modelling. The costs of conversion from relational databases to object oriented databases were also examined. Costs were based on published benchmark tests, a benchmark carried out during this study and case studies. The benchmark tests were based on an engineering database benchmark. Engineering problems such as computer-aided design and manufacturing have much to gain from conversion to object-oriented databases. Costs were calculated for coding and development, and also for operation. It was found that conversion to an object-oriented database was not usually cost effective as many of the performance benefits could be achieved by the far cheaper process of de-normalisation, or by using the performance improving facilities provided by many relational database systems such as indexing or partitioning or by simply upgrading the system hardware. It is concluded therefore that while object oriented databases are a better alternative for databases built from scratch, the conversion of a legacy relational database to an object oriented database is not necessarily cost effective

    SIP Draft Specification

    A Submission Information Package (SIP) is defined in the OAIS standard1 as an Information Package that is delivered by the Producer to the OAIS for use in the construction or update of one or more AIPs and/or the associated Descriptive Information. Many different SIP formats are used all over the world and unfortunately there is currently no central format for a SIP which would cover all individual national and business needs identified in the E-ARK Report on Available Best Practices. Therefore, the main objective of this report is to describe a draft SIP specification for the E-ARK project – give an overview of the structure and main metadata elements for E-ARK SIP and provide initial input for the technical implementations of E-ARK ingest tools. The target group of this work are E-ARK project partners as well as all other archival institutions and software providers creating or updating their SIP format specifications. This report provides an overview of: • The general structure for submission information packages. This report explains how the E-ARK SIP is constructed by following the common rules for all other (archival, dissemination) information packages. • The SIP METS Profile. We provide a detailed overview of metadata sections and the metadata elements in these sections. The table with all metadata elements could possibly be of interest to technical stakeholders who wish to continue with the more detailed work of the E-ARK SIP implementation later. Two examples with different kinds of content (MoReq2010, SIARD-E) following the common structure for EARK submission information package can be found in the appendixes to this report

    Prediction of poor health in small ruminants and companion animals with accelerometers and machine learning

    Global warming is one of the biggest challenge of our times, and significant efforts are being undertaken by academics, industries and other actors to tackle the problem. In the agricultural field precision farming is part of the solution to environmental sustainability and has been researched increasingly in recent years. Indeed, it has the potential to effectively increase livestock yield and decrease production carbon footprint while maintaining welfare. The thesis begins with a review of developments in automated animal monitoring and then moves on to a case study of a health monitoring system for small-ruminant in South Africa. As a demonstration and validation of the potential use case of the system, the method we propose is then applied to another study which aims to study feline health. Lower and Middle Income countries will be strongly affected by the changing climate and its impacts. We devise our method based on two South African small scale sheep and goat farms where assessment of the health status of individual animals is a key step in the timely and targeted treatment of infections, which is critical in the fight against anthelmintic and antimicrobial resistance. The FAMACHA scoring system has been used successfully to detect anaemia caused by infection with the parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus in small ruminants and is an effective way to identify individuals in need of treatment. However, assessing FAMACHA is labour-intensive and costly as individuals must be manually examined at frequent intervals. Here, we used accelerometers to measure the individual activity of extensively grazed small ruminants exposed to natural Haemonchus contortus worm infection in southern Africa over long time scales (13+ months). When combined with machine learning for missing data imputation and classification, we find that this activity data can predict poorer health as well as those individuals that respond to treatment, with precision up to 80%. We demonstrate that these classifiers remain robust over time. Interpretation of trained classifiers reveals that poorer health can be predicted mainly by the night-time activity levels in the sheep. Our study reveals behavioural patterns across two small ruminant species, which low-cost biologgers can exploit to detect subtle changes in animal health and enable timely and targeted intervention. This has real potential to improve economic outcomes and animal welfare as well as limit the use of anthelmintic drugs and diminish pressures on anthelmintic resistance in both commercial and resource-poor communal farming. The validation of the proposed techniques with a different study group will be discussed in the latter part of the thesis. We used the accelerometry data of indoor cats equipped with wearable accelerometers in conjunction with their health status to detect signs of degenerative joint disease, and adapted our machine-learning pipeline to analyse bursts of high activity in the cats. We were able to classify high-activity events with precision up to 70% despite the relatively small dataset adding further evidence to the viability of animal health monitoring with accelerometers

    This is the tenth in the series of highly successful international workshops on the Teaching, Learning and Assessment of Databases (TLAD 2012). TLAD 2012 is held on the 9th July at the University of Hertfordshire and hopes to be just as successful as its predecessors. The teaching of databases is central to all Computing Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems and Information Technology courses, and this year, the workshop aims to continue the tradition of bringing together both database teachers and researchers, in order to share good learning, teaching and assessment practice and experience, and further the growing community amongst database academics. As well as attracting academics and teachers from the UK community, the workshop has also been successful in attracting academics from the wider international community, through serving on the programme committee, and attending and presenting papers. Due to the healthy number of high quality submissions this year, the workshop will present eight peer reviewed papers. Of these, six will be presented as full papers and two as short papers. These papers cover a number of themes, including: the teaching of data mining and data warehousing, SQL and NoSQL, databases at school, and database curricula themselves. The final paper will give a timely ten-year review of TLAD workshops, and it is expected that these papers will lead to a stimulating closing discussion, which will continue beyond the workshop. We also look forward to a keynote presentation by Karen Fraser, who has contributed to many TLAD workshops as the HEA organizer. Titled “An Effective Higher Education Academy”, the keynote will discuss the Academy’s plans for the future and outline how participants can get involved

    Internet... the final frontier: an ethnographic account: exploring the cultural space of the Net from the inside

    The research project The Internet as a space for interaction, which completed its mission in Autumn 1998, studied the constitutive features of network culture and network organisation. Special emphasis was given to the dynamic interplay of technical and social conventions regarding both the Net’s organisation as well as its change. The ethnographic perspective chosen studied the Internet from the inside. Research concentrated upon three fields of study: the hegemonial operating technology of net nodes (UNIX) the network’s basic transmission technology (the Internet Protocol IP) and a popular communication service (Usenet). The project’s final report includes the results of the three branches explored. Drawing upon the development in the three fields it is shown that changes that come about on the Net are neither anarchic nor arbitrary. Instead, the decentrally organised Internet is based upon technically and organisationally distributed forms of coordination within which individual preferences collectively attain the power of developing into definitive standards. --

These actors and organisations (will) use open source infrastructures that contain all the services to (further) develop their competences, using all the distributed knowledge resources (including actors), learning activities, units of learning and learning routes/ programmes that are available online. The main theme of this workshop is to provide an overview on current research on support and empowerment of learners in relation to their competence development.
