    Use of COTS functional analysis software as an IVHM design tool for detection and isolation of UAV fuel system faults

    This paper presents a new approach to the development of health management solutions which can be applied to both new and legacy platforms during the conceptual design phase. The approach involves the qualitative functional modelling of a system in order to perform an Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) design – the placement of sensors and the diagnostic rules to be used in interrogating their output. The qualitative functional analysis was chosen as a route for early assessment of failures in complex systems. Functional models of system components are required for capturing the available system knowledge used during various stages of system and IVHM design. MADe™ (Maintenance Aware Design environment), a COTS software tool developed by PHM Technology, was used for the health management design. A model has been built incorporating the failure diagrams of five failure modes for five different components of a UAV fuel system. Thus an inherent health management solution for the system and the optimised sensor set solution have been defined. The automatically generated sensor set solution also contains a diagnostic rule set, which was validated on the fuel rig for different operation modes taking into account the predicted fault detection/isolation and ambiguity group coefficients. It was concluded that when using functional modelling, the IVHM design and the actual system design cannot be done in isolation. The functional approach requires permanent input from the system designer and reliability engineers in order to construct a functional model that will qualitatively represent the real system. In other words, the physical insight should not be isolated from the failure phenomena and the diagnostic analysis tools should be able to adequately capture the experience bases. This approach has been verified on a laboratory bench top test rig which can simulate a range of possible fuel system faults. The rig is fully instrumented in order to allow benchmarking of various sensing solution for fault detection/isolation that were identified using functional analysis

    A two-level structure for advanced space power system automation

    The tasks to be carried out during the three-year project period are: (1) performing extensive simulation using existing mathematical models to build a specific knowledge base of the operating characteristics of space power systems; (2) carrying out the necessary basic research on hierarchical control structures, real-time quantitative algorithms, and decision-theoretic procedures; (3) developing a two-level automation scheme for fault detection and diagnosis, maintenance and restoration scheduling, and load management; and (4) testing and demonstration. The outlines of the proposed system structure that served as a master plan for this project, work accomplished, concluding remarks, and ideas for future work are also addressed

    Clustering and Classification of Multivariate Stochastic Time Series in the Time and Frequency Domains

    The dissertation primarily investigates the characterization and discrimination of stochastic time series with an application to pattern recognition and fault detection. These techniques supplement traditional methodologies that make overly restrictive assumptions about the nature of a signal by accommodating stochastic behavior. The assumption that the signal under investigation is either deterministic or a deterministic signal polluted with white noise excludes an entire class of signals -- stochastic time series. The research is concerned with this class of signals almost exclusively. The investigation considers signals in both the time and the frequency domains and makes use of both model-based and model-free techniques. A comparison of two multivariate statistical discrimination techniques, one based on a traditional covariance statistic and one based on a more recently proposed periodogram based statistic, is carried out through simulation study. This investigation validates the utility of the periodogram based statistic over the covariance based statistic. The periodogram based statistic proves more useful in identifying statistical dissimilarities in multidimensional time series than the more traditional statistic. Attention is then focused on using the periodogram based statistic as a distance measure for clustering and classifying time series, which is motivated by the periodogram method\u27s increased discrimination capability. The test statistic is used in both clustering and classification algorithms, and the performance is evaluated though a simulation study. This measure proves capable of grouping like series together while simultaneously separating dissimilar series from one another. Finally, the techniques are adapted to the time-domain where they are used to cluster multidimensional, non-stationary, climatological data. The non-stationary model accounts for seasonal means, seasonal standard deviations, and stochastic components. The statistical approach results in the development of a level-α test for assessing signal equality. This improves upon typical dendrogram techniques by defining a level under which the distance should be considered zero. Climatological time series from the west coast, Gulf of Mexico, and east coast are analyzed using the aforementioned techniques. To complement the time series analysis work, some effort (Appendix A) is focused on improving the bachelor of science in the department of mechanical engineering via the undergraduate laboratories. This is accomplished by identifying desired outcomes and implementing specific improvements in the undergraduate laboratory courses over a period of four years. The effects of these improvements are quantified with survey results. Overall, the improvements are very well received and result in significant increases in student satisfaction

    Entropy Measures in Machine Fault Diagnosis: Insights and Applications

    Entropy, as a complexity measure, has been widely applied for time series analysis. One preeminent example is the design of machine condition monitoring and industrial fault diagnostic systems. The occurrence of failures in a machine will typically lead to non-linear characteristics in the measurements, caused by instantaneous variations, which can increase the complexity in the system response. Entropy measures are suitable to quantify such dynamic changes in the underlying process, distinguishing between different system conditions. However, notions of entropy are defined differently in various contexts (e.g., information theory and dynamical systems theory), which may confound researchers in the applied sciences. In this paper, we have systematically reviewed the theoretical development of some fundamental entropy measures and clarified the relations among them. Then, typical entropy-based applications of machine fault diagnostic systems are summarized. Further, insights into possible applications of the entropy measures are explained, as to where and how these measures can be useful towards future data-driven fault diagnosis methodologies. Finally, potential research trends in this area are discussed, with the intent of improving online entropy estimation and expanding its applicability to a wider range of intelligent fault diagnostic systems

    This reprint focuses on wear and fatigue analysis, the dynamic properties of coating surfaces in transmission systems, and non-destructive condition monitoring for the health management of transmission systems. Transmission systems play a vital role in various types of industrial structure, including wind turbines, vehicles, mining and material-handling equipment, offshore vessels, and aircrafts. Surface wear is an inevitable phenomenon during the service life of transmission systems (such as on gearboxes, bearings, and shafts), and wear propagation can reduce the durability of the contact coating surface. As a result, the performance of the transmission system can degrade significantly, which can cause sudden shutdown of the whole system and lead to unexpected economic loss and accidents. Therefore, to ensure adequate health management of the transmission system, it is necessary to investigate the friction, vibration, and dynamic properties of its contact coating surface and monitor its operating conditions

    Novel deep cross-domain framework for fault diagnosis or rotary machinery in prognostics and health management

    Improving the reliability of engineered systems is a crucial problem in many applications in various engineering fields, such as aerospace, nuclear energy, and water declination industries. This requires efficient and effective system health monitoring methods, including processing and analyzing massive machinery data to detect anomalies and performing diagnosis and prognosis. In recent years, deep learning has been a fast-growing field and has shown promising results for Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) in interpreting condition monitoring signals such as vibration, acoustic emission, and pressure due to its capacity to mine complex representations from raw data. This doctoral research provides a systematic review of state-of-the-art deep learning-based PHM frameworks, an empirical analysis on bearing fault diagnosis benchmarks, and a novel multi-source domain adaptation framework. It emphasizes the most recent trends within the field and presents the benefits and potentials of state-of-the-art deep neural networks for system health management. Besides, the limitations and challenges of the existing technologies are discussed, which leads to opportunities for future research. The empirical study of the benchmarks highlights the evaluation results of the existing models on bearing fault diagnosis benchmark datasets in terms of various performance metrics such as accuracy and training time. The result of the study is very important for comparing or testing new models. A novel multi-source domain adaptation framework for fault diagnosis of rotary machinery is also proposed, which aligns the domains in both feature-level and task-level. The proposed framework transfers the knowledge from multiple labeled source domains into a single unlabeled target domain by reducing the feature distribution discrepancy between the target domain and each source domain. Besides, the model can be easily reduced to a single-source domain adaptation problem. Also, the model can be readily updated to unsupervised domain adaptation problems in other fields such as image classification and image segmentation. Further, the proposed model is modified with a novel conditional weighting mechanism that aligns the class-conditional probability of the domains and reduces the effect of irrelevant source domain which is a critical issue in multi-source domain adaptation algorithms. The experimental verification results show the superiority of the proposed framework over state-of-the-art multi-source domain-adaptation models
