A scalable multi-core architecture with heterogeneous memory structures for Dynamic Neuromorphic Asynchronous Processors (DYNAPs)
Neuromorphic computing systems comprise networks of neurons that use
asynchronous events for both computation and communication. This type of
representation offers several advantages in terms of bandwidth and power
consumption in neuromorphic electronic systems. However, managing the traffic
of asynchronous events in large scale systems is a daunting task, both in terms
of circuit complexity and memory requirements. Here we present a novel routing
methodology that employs both hierarchical and mesh routing strategies and
combines heterogeneous memory structures for minimizing both memory
requirements and latency, while maximizing programming flexibility to support a
wide range of event-based neural network architectures, through parameter
configuration. We validated the proposed scheme in a prototype multi-core
neuromorphic processor chip that employs hybrid analog/digital circuits for
emulating synapse and neuron dynamics together with asynchronous digital
circuits for managing the address-event traffic. We present a theoretical
analysis of the proposed connectivity scheme, describe the methods and circuits
used to implement such scheme, and characterize the prototype chip. Finally, we
demonstrate the use of the neuromorphic processor with a convolutional neural
network for the real-time classification of visual symbols being flashed to a
dynamic vision sensor (DVS) at high speed.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figure
Efficient Micro-Mobility using Intra-domain Multicast-based Mechanisms (M&M)
One of the most important metrics in the design of IP mobility protocols is
the handover performance. The current Mobile IP (MIP) standard has been shown
to exhibit poor handover performance. Most other work attempts to modify MIP to
slightly improve its efficiency, while others propose complex techniques to
replace MIP. Rather than taking these approaches, we instead propose a new
architecture for providing efficient and smooth handover, while being able to
co-exist and inter-operate with other technologies. Specifically, we propose an
intra-domain multicast-based mobility architecture, where a visiting mobile is
assigned a multicast address to use while moving within a domain. Efficient
handover is achieved using standard multicast join/prune mechanisms. Two
approaches are proposed and contrasted. The first introduces the concept
proxy-based mobility, while the other uses algorithmic mapping to obtain the
multicast address of visiting mobiles. We show that the algorithmic mapping
approach has several advantages over the proxy approach, and provide mechanisms
to support it. Network simulation (using NS-2) is used to evaluate our scheme
and compare it to other routing-based micro-mobility schemes - CIP and HAWAII.
The proactive handover results show that both M&M and CIP shows low handoff
delay and packet reordering depth as compared to HAWAII. The reason for M&M's
comparable performance with CIP is that both use bi-cast in proactive handover.
The M&M, however, handles multiple border routers in a domain, where CIP fails.
We also provide a handover algorithm leveraging the proactive path setup
capability of M&M, which is expected to outperform CIP in case of reactive

Low Cost Quality of Service Multicast Routing in High Speed Networks
Many of the services envisaged for high speed networks, such as B-ISDN/ATM, will support real-time applications with large numbers of users. Examples of these types of application range from those used by closed groups, such as private video meetings or conferences, where all participants must be known to the sender, to applications used by open groups, such as video lectures, where partcipants need not be known by the sender. These types of application will require high volumes of network resources in addition to the real-time delay constraints on data delivery. For these reasons, several multicast routing heuristics have been proposed to support both interactive and distribution multimedia services, in high speed networks. The objective of such heuristics is to minimise the multicast tree cost while maintaining a real-time bound on delay. Previous evaluation work has compared the relative average performance of some of these heuristics and concludes that they are generally efficient, although some perform better for small multicast groups and others perform better for larger groups. Firstly, we present a detailed analysis and evaluation of some of these heuristics which illustrates that in some situations their average performance is reversed; a heuristic that in general produces efficient solutions for small multicasts may sometimes produce a more efficient solution for a particular large multicast, in a specific network. Also, in a limited number of cases using Dijkstra's algorithm produces the best result. We conclude that the efficiency of a heuristic solution depends on the topology of both the network and the multicast, and that it is difficult to predict. Because of this unpredictability we propose the integration of two heuristics with Dijkstra's shortest path tree algorithm to produce a hybrid that consistently generates efficient multicast solutions for all possible multicast groups in any network. These heuristics are based on Dijkstra's algorithm which maintains acceptable time complexity for the hybrid, and they rarely produce inefficient solutions for the same network/multicast. The resulting performance attained is generally good and in the rare worst cases is that of the shortest path tree. The performance of our hybrid is supported by our evaluation results. Secondly, we examine the stability of multicast trees where multicast group membership is dynamic. We conclude that, in general, the more efficient the solution of a heuristic is, the less stable the multicast tree will be as multicast group membership changes. For this reason, while the hybrid solution we propose might be suitable for use with closed user group multicasts, which are likely to be stable, we need a different approach for open user group multicasting, where group membership may be highly volatile. We propose an extension to an existing heuristic that ensures multicast tree stability where multicast group membership is dynamic. Although this extension decreases the efficiency of the heuristics solutions, its performance is significantly better than that of the worst case, a shortest path tree. Finally, we consider how we might apply the hybrid and the extended heuristic in current and future multicast routing protocols for the Internet and for ATM Networks.
Performance Analysis of Multicast Mobility in a Hierarchical Mobile IP Proxy Environment
Mobility support in IPv6 networks is ready for release as an RFC, stimulating
major discussions on improvements to meet real-time communication requirements.
Sprawling hot spots of IP-only wireless networks at the same time await voice
and videoconferencing as standard mobile Internet services, thereby adding the
request for multicast support to real-time mobility. This paper briefly
introduces current approaches for seamless multicast extensions to Mobile IPv6.
Key issues of multicast mobility are discussed. Both analytically and in
simulations comparisons are drawn between handover performance characteristics,

Extending TRANSIMS Technology to an Integrated Multilevel Representation
The TRANSIMS system developed at Los Alamos in the USA over the past decade is a world leader in providing an integrated land-use transportation dynamical model for large areas with a million or more inhabitants. TRANSIMS uses standard survey data to create synthetic micropopulations, including family structure, to simulate trip making and emergent traffic dynamics. We propose to extend TRANSIMS by adapting it to a new multi-level representation, allowing dynamics to be algebraically integrated at the micro-, meso- and macro-levels. The new representation builds a lattice hierarchy in a way that integrates non-partitional hierarchies of links and routes based on the usual hierarchy of geographical zones, e.g. neighbourhoods, districts, cities, counties and countries. Applying the representation to a big city starts by defining sets of zones at different levels. At the first level, N, is the street. This can be subdivided to building plots at level N-1, buildings at level N-2, and even rooms at level N-3. At level N+1 are the neighbourhoods, at level N+2 is the set of district zones (each of them containing the different neighbourhoods in the previous level), and at the top level N+3 (in this case), is just one zone, the city itself. If a larger study area is to be considered, we would have a whole set of N+3 zones defining N+4-level areas, and so on, extending to the level of counties, countries or even continents. This paper will explain the fundamentals of TRANSIMS technology and compare it to other systems. We will show how TRANSIMS and the new multi-level representation can be brought together to give new insights into the macro-dynamics of very large road systems such as London, England and even the whole of Europe
