    Novel Motion Anchoring Strategies for Wavelet-based Highly Scalable Video Compression

    This thesis investigates new motion anchoring strategies that are targeted at wavelet-based highly scalable video compression (WSVC). We depart from two practices that are deeply ingrained in existing video compression systems. Instead of the commonly used block motion, which has poor scalability attributes, we employ piecewise-smooth motion together with a highly scalable motion boundary description. The combination of this more “physical” motion description together with motion discontinuity information allows us to change the conventional strategy of anchoring motion at target frames to anchoring motion at reference frames, which improves motion inference across time. In the proposed reference-based motion anchoring strategies, motion fields are mapped from reference to target frames, where they serve as prediction references; during this mapping process, disoccluded regions are readily discovered. Observing that motion discontinuities displace with foreground objects, we propose motion-discontinuity driven motion mapping operations that handle traditionally challenging regions around moving objects. The reference-based motion anchoring exposes an intricate connection between temporal frame interpolation (TFI) and video compression. When employed in a compression system, all anchoring strategies explored in this thesis perform TFI once all residual information is quantized to zero at a given temporal level. The interpolation performance is evaluated on both natural and synthetic sequences, where we show favourable comparisons with state-of-the-art TFI schemes. We explore three reference-based motion anchoring strategies. In the first one, the motion anchoring is “flipped” with respect to a hierarchical B-frame structure. We develop an analytical model to determine the weights of the different spatio-temporal subbands, and assess the suitability and benefits of this reference-based WSVC for (highly scalable) video compression. Reduced motion coding cost and improved frame prediction, especially around moving objects, result in improved rate-distortion performance compared to a target-based WSVC. As the thesis evolves, the motion anchoring is progressively simplified to one where all motion is anchored at one base frame; this central motion organization facilitates the incorporation of higher-order motion models, which improve the prediction performance in regions following motion with non-constant velocity

    CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap

    After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year. In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio- economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal challenges

    Processing Structured Hypermedia : A Matter of Style

    With the introduction of the World Wide Web in the early nineties, hypermedia has become the uniform interface to the wide variety of information sources available over the Internet. The full potential of the Web, however, can only be realized by building on the strengths of its underlying research fields. This book describes the areas of hypertext, multimedia, electronic publishing and the World Wide Web and points out fundamental similarities and differences in approaches towards the processing of information. It gives an overview of the dominant models and tools developed in these fields and describes the key interrelationships and mutual incompatibilities. In addition to a formal specification of a selection of these models, the book discusses the impact of the models described on the software architectures that have been developed for processing hypermedia documents. Two example hypermedia architectures are described in more detail: the DejaVu object-oriented hypermedia framework, developed at the VU, and CWI's Berlage environment for time-based hypermedia document transformations

    A cognitive ego-vision system for interactive assistance

    With increasing computational power and decreasing size, computers nowadays are already wearable and mobile. They become attendant of peoples' everyday life. Personal digital assistants and mobile phones equipped with adequate software gain a lot of interest in public, although the functionality they provide in terms of assistance is little more than a mobile databases for appointments, addresses, to-do lists and photos. Compared to the assistance a human can provide, such systems are hardly to call real assistants. The motivation to construct more human-like assistance systems that develop a certain level of cognitive capabilities leads to the exploration of two central paradigms in this work. The first paradigm is termed cognitive vision systems. Such systems take human cognition as a design principle of underlying concepts and develop learning and adaptation capabilities to be more flexible in their application. They are embodied, active, and situated. Second, the ego-vision paradigm is introduced as a very tight interaction scheme between a user and a computer system that especially eases close collaboration and assistance between these two. Ego-vision systems (EVS) take a user's (visual) perspective and integrate the human in the system's processing loop by means of a shared perception and augmented reality. EVSs adopt techniques of cognitive vision to identify objects, interpret actions, and understand the user's visual perception. And they articulate their knowledge and interpretation by means of augmentations of the user's own view. These two paradigms are studied as rather general concepts, but always with the goal in mind to realize more flexible assistance systems that closely collaborate with its users. This work provides three major contributions. First, a definition and explanation of ego-vision as a novel paradigm is given. Benefits and challenges of this paradigm are discussed as well. Second, a configuration of different approaches that permit an ego-vision system to perceive its environment and its user is presented in terms of object and action recognition, head gesture recognition, and mosaicing. These account for the specific challenges identified for ego-vision systems, whose perception capabilities are based on wearable sensors only. Finally, a visual active memory (VAM) is introduced as a flexible conceptual architecture for cognitive vision systems in general, and for assistance systems in particular. It adopts principles of human cognition to develop a representation for information stored in this memory. So-called memory processes continuously analyze, modify, and extend the content of this VAM. The functionality of the integrated system emerges from their coordinated interplay of these memory processes. An integrated assistance system applying the approaches and concepts outlined before is implemented on the basis of the visual active memory. The system architecture is discussed and some exemplary processing paths in this system are presented and discussed. It assists users in object manipulation tasks and has reached a maturity level that allows to conduct user studies. Quantitative results of different integrated memory processes are as well presented as an assessment of the interactive system by means of these user studies

    Methods and measures for investigating microscale motility

    Motility is an essential factor for an organism's survival and diversification. With the advent of novel single-cell technologies, analytical frameworks and theoretical methods, we can begin to probe the complex lives of microscopic motile organisms and answer the intertwining biological and physical questions of how these diverse lifeforms navigate their surroundings. Herein, we give an overview of different experimental, analytical, and mathematical methods used to study a suite of microscale motility mechanisms across different scales encompassing molecular-, individual- to population-level. We identify transferable techniques, pressing challenges, and future directions in the field. This review can serve as a starting point for researchers who are interested in exploring and quantifying the movements of organisms in the microscale world.Comment: 24 pages, 2 figure
