    Recently, wireless network technologies were designed for most of the applications. Congestion raised in the wireless network degrades the performance and reduces the throughput. Congestion-free network is quit essen- tial in the transport layer to prevent performance degradation in a wireless network. Game theory is a branch of applied mathematics and applied sciences that used in wireless network, political science, biology, computer science, philosophy and economics. e great challenges of wireless network are their congestion by various factors. E ective congestion-free alternate path routing is pretty essential to increase network performance. Stackelberg game theory model is currently employed as an e ective tool to design and formulate conges- tion issues in wireless networks. is work uses a Stackelberg game to design alternate path model to avoid congestion. In this game, leaders and followers are selected to select an alternate routing path. e correlated equilibrium is used in Stackelberg game for making better decision between non-cooperation and cooperation. Congestion was continuously monitored to increase the throughput in the network. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme could extensively improve the network performance by reducing congestion with the help of Stackelberg game and thereby enhance throughput

    Reliable and Congestion Control Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

    The objective of this paper is to analyze review and different congestion control protocols that are employed at the transport layer and some of them working at the medium access control layer in wireless sensor networks. Firstly, a brief introduction is given about wireless sensor networks and how congestion occurs in such networks. Secondly, the concept of congestion is discussed. Thirdly, the reason of occurrence of congestion in wireless sensor networks is analyzed. After that, congestion control and why it is needed in the wireless sensor networks is discussed. Then, a brief review of different congestion control and reliable data transport mechanisms are discussed. Finally, a comparative analysis of different protocols is made depending on their performance on various parameters such as - traffic direction, energy conservation characteristic, efficiency etc. and the paper is concluded

    Congestion control in wireless sensor and 6LoWPAN networks: toward the Internet of Things

    The Internet of Things (IoT) is the next big challenge for the research community where the IPv6 over low power wireless personal area network (6LoWPAN) protocol stack is a key part of the IoT. Recently, the IETF ROLL and 6LoWPAN working groups have developed new IP based protocols for 6LoWPAN networks to alleviate the challenges of connecting low memory, limited processing capability, and constrained power supply sensor nodes to the Internet. In 6LoWPAN networks, heavy network traffic causes congestion which significantly degrades network performance and impacts on quality of service aspects such as throughput, latency, energy consumption, reliability, and packet delivery. In this paper, we overview the protocol stack of 6LoWPAN networks and summarize a set of its protocols and standards. Also, we review and compare a number of popular congestion control mechanisms in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and classify them into traffic control, resource control, and hybrid algorithms based on the congestion control strategy used. We present a comparative review of all existing congestion control approaches in 6LoWPAN networks. This paper highlights and discusses the differences between congestion control mechanisms for WSNs and 6LoWPAN networks as well as explaining the suitability and validity of WSN congestion control schemes for 6LoWPAN networks. Finally, this paper gives some potential directions for designing a novel congestion control protocol, which supports the IoT application requirements, in future work

    A Priority Rate-Based Routing Protocol for wireless multimedia sensor networks

    The development of affordable hardware has made it possible to transmit multimedia data over a wireless medium using sensor devices. Deployed sensors span larger geographical areas, generating different kinds of traffic that need to be communicated either in real-time or non-real-time mode to the sink. The tiny sized design of sensor nodes has made them even more attractive in various environments as they can be left unattended for longer periods. Since sensor nodes are equipped with limited resources, newer energy-efficient protocols and architectures are required in order to meet requirements within their limited capabilities when dealing with multimedia data. This is because multimedia applications are characterized by strict quality of service requirements that distinctively differentiate them from other data types during transmission. However, the large volume of data produced by the sensor nodes can easily cause traffic congestion making it difficult to meet these requirements. Congestion has negative impacts on the data transmitted as well as the sensor network at large. Failure to control congestion will affect the quality of multimedia data received at the sink and further shorten the system lifetime. Next generation wireless sensor networks are predicted to deploy a different model where service is allocated to multimedia while bearing congestion in mind. Applying traditional wireless sensor routing algorithms to wireless multimedia sensor networks may lead to high delay and poor visual quality for multimedia applications. In this research, a Priority Rate-Based Routing Protocol (PRRP) that assigns priorities to traffic depending on their service requirements is proposed. PRRP detects congestion by using adaptive random early detection (A-RED) and a priority rate-based adjustment technique to control congestion. We study the performance of our proposed multi-path routing algorithm for real-time traffic when mixed with three non real-time traffic each with a different priority: high, medium or low. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs better when compared to two existing algorithms, PCCP and PBRC-SD, in terms of queueing delay, packet loss and throughput
