A Hierarchical Approach to Multimodal Classification
Abstract. Data models that are induced in classifier construction often consists of multiple parts, each of which explains part of the data. Classi-fication methods for such models are called the multimodal classification methods. The model parts may overlap or have insufficient coverage. How to deal best with the problems of overlapping and insufficient cov-erage? In this paper we propose hierarchical or layered approach to this problem. Rather than seeking a single model, we consider a series of models under gradually relaxing conditions, which form a hierarchical structure. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach we imple-mented it in two classifiers that construct multi-part models: one based on the so-called lattice machine and the other one based on rough set rule induction. This leads to hierarchical versions of the classifiers. The classification performance of these two hierarchical classifiers is compared with C4.5, Support Vector Machine (SVM), rule based classifiers (with the optimisation of rule shortening) implemented in Rough Set Explo-ration System (RSES), and a method combining k-nn with rough set rule induction (RIONA in RSES). The results of the experiments show that this hierarchical approach leads to improved multimodal classifiers

Hierarchical classification for multiple, distributed web databases
The proliferation of online information resources increases the importance of effective and efficient distributed searching. Our research aims to provide an alternative hierarchical categorization and search capability based on a Bayesian network learning algorithm. Our proposed approach, which is grounded on automatic textual analysis of subject content of online web databases, attempts to address the database selection problem by first classifying web databases into a hierarchy of topic categories. The experimental results reported demonstrate that such a classification approach not only effectively reduces the class search space, but also helps to significantly improve the accuracy of classification performance
Scalable approximate FRNN-OWA classification
Fuzzy Rough Nearest Neighbour classification with Ordered Weighted Averaging operators (FRNN-OWA) is an algorithm that classifies unseen instances according to their membership in the fuzzy upper and lower approximations of the decision classes. Previous research has shown that the use of OWA operators increases the robustness of this model. However, calculating membership in an approximation requires a nearest neighbour search. In practice, the query time complexity of exact nearest neighbour search algorithms in more than a handful of dimensions is near-linear, which limits the scalability of FRNN-OWA. Therefore, we propose approximate FRNN-OWA, a modified model that calculates upper and lower approximations of decision classes using the approximate nearest neighbours returned by Hierarchical Navigable Small Worlds (HNSW), a recent approximative nearest neighbour search algorithm with logarithmic query time complexity at constant near-100% accuracy. We demonstrate that approximate FRNN-OWA is sufficiently robust to match the classification accuracy of exact FRNN-OWA while scaling much more efficiently. We test four parameter configurations of HNSW, and evaluate their performance by measuring classification accuracy and construction and query times for samples of various sizes from three large datasets. We find that with two of the parameter configurations, approximate FRNN-OWA achieves near-identical accuracy to exact FRNN-OWA for most sample sizes within query times that are up to several orders of magnitude faster
Semantic Cross-View Matching
Matching cross-view images is challenging because the appearance and
viewpoints are significantly different. While low-level features based on
gradient orientations or filter responses can drastically vary with such
changes in viewpoint, semantic information of images however shows an invariant
characteristic in this respect. Consequently, semantically labeled regions can
be used for performing cross-view matching. In this paper, we therefore explore
this idea and propose an automatic method for detecting and representing the
semantic information of an RGB image with the goal of performing cross-view
matching with a (non-RGB) geographic information system (GIS). A segmented
image forms the input to our system with segments assigned to semantic concepts
such as traffic signs, lakes, roads, foliage, etc. We design a descriptor to
robustly capture both, the presence of semantic concepts and the spatial layout
of those segments. Pairwise distances between the descriptors extracted from
the GIS map and the query image are then used to generate a shortlist of the
most promising locations with similar semantic concepts in a consistent spatial
layout. An experimental evaluation with challenging query images and a large
urban area shows promising results
