DramaQA: Character-Centered Video Story Understanding with Hierarchical QA
Despite recent progress on computer vision and natural language processing,
developing video understanding intelligence is still hard to achieve due to the
intrinsic difficulty of story in video. Moreover, there is not a theoretical
metric for evaluating the degree of video understanding. In this paper, we
propose a novel video question answering (Video QA) task, DramaQA, for a
comprehensive understanding of the video story. The DramaQA focused on two
perspectives: 1) hierarchical QAs as an evaluation metric based on the
cognitive developmental stages of human intelligence. 2) character-centered
video annotations to model local coherence of the story. Our dataset is built
upon the TV drama "Another Miss Oh" and it contains 16,191 QA pairs from 23,928
various length video clips, with each QA pair belonging to one of four
difficulty levels. We provide 217,308 annotated images with rich
character-centered annotations, including visual bounding boxes, behaviors, and
emotions of main characters, and coreference resolved scripts. Additionally, we
provide analyses of the dataset as well as Dual Matching Multistream model
which effectively learns character-centered representations of video to answer
questions about the video. We are planning to release our dataset and model
publicly for research purposes and expect that our work will provide a new

A Formal Framework for Linguistic Annotation
`Linguistic annotation' covers any descriptive or analytic notations applied
to raw language data. The basic data may be in the form of time functions --
audio, video and/or physiological recordings -- or it may be textual. The added
notations may include transcriptions of all sorts (from phonetic features to
discourse structures), part-of-speech and sense tagging, syntactic analysis,
`named entity' identification, co-reference annotation, and so on. While there
are several ongoing efforts to provide formats and tools for such annotations
and to publish annotated linguistic databases, the lack of widely accepted
standards is becoming a critical problem. Proposed standards, to the extent
they exist, have focussed on file formats. This paper focuses instead on the
logical structure of linguistic annotations. We survey a wide variety of
existing annotation formats and demonstrate a common conceptual core, the
annotation graph. This provides a formal framework for constructing,
maintaining and searching linguistic annotations, while remaining consistent
with many alternative data structures and file formats.Comment: 49 page

Designing for continuous interaction requires
designers to consider the way in which human users can
perceive and evaluate an artefact’s observable behaviour,
in order to make inferences about its state and plan, and
execute their own continuous behaviour. Understanding
the human point of view in continuous interaction requires
an understanding of human causal reasoning, of
the way in which humans perceive and structure the
world, and of human cognition. We present a framework
for representing human cognition, and show briefly how it
relates to the analysis of structure in continuous interaction,
and the ways in which it may be applied in design
Processing and Linking Audio Events in Large Multimedia Archives: The EU inEvent Project
In the inEvent EU project [1], we aim at structuring, retrieving, and sharing large archives of networked, and dynamically changing, multimedia recordings, mainly consisting of meetings, videoconferences, and lectures. More specifically, we are developing an integrated system that performs audiovisual processing of multimedia recordings, and labels them in terms of interconnected “hyper-events ” (a notion inspired from hyper-texts). Each hyper-event is composed of simpler facets, including audio-video recordings and metadata, which are then easier to search, retrieve and share. In the present paper, we mainly cover the audio processing aspects of the system, including speech recognition, speaker diarization and linking (across recordings), the use of these features for hyper-event indexing and recommendation, and the search portal. We present initial results for feature extraction from lecture recordings using the TED talks. Hierarchical Attention Network for Action Segmentation
The temporal segmentation of events is an essential task and a precursor for
the automatic recognition of human actions in the video. Several attempts have
been made to capture frame-level salient aspects through attention but they
lack the capacity to effectively map the temporal relationships in between the
frames as they only capture a limited span of temporal dependencies. To this
end we propose a complete end-to-end supervised learning approach that can
better learn relationships between actions over time, thus improving the
overall segmentation performance. The proposed hierarchical recurrent attention
framework analyses the input video at multiple temporal scales, to form
embeddings at frame level and segment level, and perform fine-grained action
segmentation. This generates a simple, lightweight, yet extremely effective
architecture for segmenting continuous video streams and has multiple
application domains. We evaluate our system on multiple challenging public
benchmark datasets, including MERL Shopping, 50 salads, and Georgia Tech
Egocentric datasets, and achieves state-of-the-art performance. The evaluated
datasets encompass numerous video capture settings which are inclusive of
static overhead camera views and dynamic, ego-centric head-mounted camera
views, demonstrating the direct applicability of the proposed framework in a

Automatic parsing of sports videos with grammars
Motivated by the analogies between languages and sports videos, we introduce a novel
approach for video parsing with grammars. It utilizes compiler techniques for integrating both semantic
annotation and syntactic analysis to generate a semantic index of events and a table of content for a given
sports video. The video sequence is first segmented and annotated by event detection with domain
knowledge. A grammar-based parser is then used to identify the structure of the video content.
Meanwhile, facilities for error handling are introduced which are particularly useful when the results of
automatic parsing need to be adjusted. As a case study, we have developed a system for video parsing in
