Feasibility of wireless mesh for LTE-Advanced small cell access backhaul
Mobile traffic demands and volumes are increasing and will dramatically keep increasing in the future. Along with this, mobile networks have evolved to better match this growth. Fourth generation cellular network standard introduced a set of new innovations for mobile communications, including support for heterogeneous network deployments. Heterogeneous networking is the likely answer for future mobile data capacity shortage but also poses some challenges, the most evident being how to implement the backhauling.
One of the most promising heterogeneous network backhaul solutions is a meshed radio system with self-organizing features. The main scope of this master's thesis is the verification of functionality and feasibility of a wireless mesh backhaul concept developed by Nokia Siemens Networks through a proof-of-concept system.
All in all, the wireless mesh proof-of-concept system performed strongly throughout the development and testing process. The different functionalities were proven to work successfully together. With further development and enhancement, the system concept displays extreme potential for a state-of-the-art heterogeneous network backhaul technology
Fuzzy Assisted Handoff Algorithm for Micro and Macro Cellular System
Handoff is an essential part of any Mobile Communication Network. Efficient handoff algorithms provide cost-effective way for enhancing the capacity and QOS of cellular system. The work reported here in presents multi-criteria based hard handoff algorithm for micro and macro-cellular architecture. Fuzzy technique has been used as optimization engine. The fuzzy handoff algorithm based on Received Signal Strength (RSS), absolute threshold value, hysteresis level, slope ratios and speed of Mobile Terminal (MT) have been previously developed for conventional cellular networks. In this work the handoff algorithm has been improved by considering two new parameter, signalling delay and angle of motion of MT along with velocity as our input criteria. Two fuzzy models named Mamdani and Sugeno have been used for processing the input criteria. Further, ANFIS has also been used to tune the Sugeno model for parameter adjustment. The proposed fuzzy inference scheme uses triangular and trapezoidal membership function for fuzzification. The types of defuzzification method used are centriod and weighted average formula for Mamdani and Sugeno model respectively. Extensive simulation analysis has been used to validate the proposed technique. The results show that fuzzy is a viable option for handoff

Study of continuous-phase four-state modulation for cordless telecommunications. Assessment by simulation of CP-QFSK as an alternative modulation scheme for TDMA digital cordless telecommunications systems operating in indoor applications
One of the major driving elements behind the explosive boom in wireless revolution is the advances in the field of modulation which plays a fundamental role in any communication system, and especially in cellular radio systems. Hence, the elaborate choice of an efficient modulation scheme is of paramount importance in the design and employment of any communications system. Work presented in this thesis is an investigation (study) of the feasibility of whether multilevel FSK modulation scheme would provide a viable alternative modem that can be employed in TDMA cordless communications systems. In the thesis the design and performance analysis of a non-coherent multi-level modem that offers a great deal of bandwidth efficiency and hardware simplicity is studied in detail. Simulation results demonstrate that 2RC pre-modulation filter pulse shaping with a modulation index of 0.3, and pre-detection filter normalized equivalent noise bandwidth of 1.5 are optimum system parameter values. Results reported in chapter 5 signify that an adjacent channel rejection factor of around 40 dB has been achieved at channel spacing of 1.5 times the symbol rate while the DECT system standards stipulated a much lower rejection limit criterion (25-30dB), implying that CP-QFSK modulation out-performs the conventional GMSK as it causes significantly less ACI, thus it is more spectrally efficient in a multi-channel system. However, measured system performance in terms of BER indicates that this system does not coexist well with other interferers as at delay spreads between 100ns to 200ns, which are commonly encountered in such indoor environment, a severe degradation in system performance apparently caused by multi-path fading has been noticed, and there exists a noise floor of about 40 dB, i.e. high irreducible error rate of less than 5.10-3. Implementing MRC diversity combiner and BCH codec has brought in a good gain.Higher Education Ministr
Quality of service differentiation for multimedia delivery in wireless LANs
Delivering multimedia content to heterogeneous devices over a variable networking environment while maintaining high quality levels involves many technical challenges. The research reported in this thesis presents a solution for Quality of Service (QoS)-based service differentiation when delivering multimedia content over the wireless LANs. This thesis has three major contributions outlined below:
1. A Model-based Bandwidth Estimation algorithm (MBE), which estimates the available bandwidth based on novel TCP and UDP throughput models over IEEE 802.11 WLANs. MBE has been modelled, implemented, and tested through simulations and real life testing. In comparison with other bandwidth estimation techniques, MBE shows better performance in terms of error rate, overhead, and loss.
2. An intelligent Prioritized Adaptive Scheme (iPAS), which provides QoS service differentiation for multimedia delivery in wireless networks. iPAS assigns dynamic priorities to various streams and determines their bandwidth share by employing a probabilistic approach-which makes use of stereotypes. The total bandwidth to be allocated is estimated using MBE. The priority level of individual stream is variable and dependent on stream-related characteristics and delivery QoS parameters. iPAS can be deployed seamlessly over the original IEEE 802.11 protocols and can be included in the IEEE 802.21 framework in order to optimize the control signal communication. iPAS has been modelled, implemented, and evaluated via simulations. The results demonstrate that iPAS achieves better performance than the equal channel access mechanism over IEEE 802.11 DCF and a service differentiation scheme on top of IEEE 802.11e EDCA, in terms of fairness, throughput, delay, loss, and estimated PSNR. Additionally, both objective and subjective video quality assessment have been performed using a prototype system.
3. A QoS-based Downlink/Uplink Fairness Scheme, which uses the stereotypes-based structure to balance the QoS parameters (i.e. throughput, delay, and loss) between downlink and uplink VoIP traffic. The proposed scheme has been modelled and tested through simulations. The results show that, in comparison with other downlink/uplink fairness-oriented solutions, the proposed scheme performs better in terms of VoIP capacity and fairness level between downlink and uplink traffic
Efficient and Virtualized Scheduling for OFDM-Based High Mobility Wireless Communications Objects
Services providers (SPs) in the radio platform technology standard long term evolution (LTE) systems are enduring many challenges in order to accommodate the rapid expansion of mobile data usage. The modern technologies demonstrate new challenges to SPs, for example, reducing the cost of the capital and operating expenditures while supporting high data throughput per customer, extending battery life-per-charge of the cell phone devices, and supporting high mobility communications with fast and seamless handover (HO) networking architecture. In this thesis, a variety of optimized techniques aimed at providing innovative solutions for such challenges are explored. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part outlines the benefits and challenges of deploying virtualized resource sharing concept. Wherein, SPs achieving a different schedulers policy are sharing evolved network B, allowing SPs to customize their efforts and provide service requirements; as a promising solution for reducing operational and capital expenditures, leading to potential energy savings, and supporting higher peak rates. The second part, formulates the optimized power allocation problem in a virtualized scheme in LTE uplink systems, aiming to extend the mobile devices’ battery utilization time per charge. While, the third part extrapolates a proposed hybrid-HO (HY-HO) technique, that can enhance the system performance in terms of latency and HO reliability at cell boundary for high mobility objects (up to 350 km/hr; wherein, HO will occur more frequent). The main contributions of this thesis are in designing optimal binary integer programmingbased and suboptimal heuristic (with complexity reduction) scheduling algorithms subject to exclusive and contiguous allocation, maximum transmission power, and rate constraints. Moreover, designing the HY-HO based on the combination of soft and hard HO was able to enhance the system performance in term of latency, interruption time and reliability during HO. The results prove that the proposed solutions effectively contribute in addressing the challenges caused by the demand for high data rates and power transmission in mobile networks especially in virtualized resources sharing scenarios that can support high data rates with improving quality of services (QoSs)

carefully considered when designing 5G communication systems and Mobile Network
Operators (MNOs) will need to revisit business models that were not of their
prior interest (e.g. Cognitive Radio) or consider adopting new business models
that emerge (e.g. Licensed Shared Access) so as to cover the extended capacity
needs. Spectrum sharing is considered unavoidable for 5G systems and this
thesis provides a solution for adaptive spectrum sharing under multiple
authorization regimes based on a novel architecture framework that enables
network elements to proceed in decisions for spectrum acquisition. The decision
making process for spectrum acquisition proposed is a novel Adaptive Spectrum
Sharing technique that uses Fuzzy Logic controllers to determine the most
suitable spectrum sharing option and reinforcement learning to tune the fuzzy
logic rules, aiming to find an optimal policy that MNO should follow in order
to offer the desirable Quality of Service to its users, while preserving
resources (either economical, or radio) when possible. The final contribution
of this thesis is a mechanism that ensures fair access to spectrum among the
users in scenarios in which conveying spectrum license is not prerequisite

Radio Resource Management for Satellite UMTS. Dynamic scheduling algorithm for a UMTS-compatible satellite network.
The third generation of mobile communication systems introduce
interactive Multicast and Unicast multimedia services at a fast data rate of
up to 2 Mbps and is expected to complete the globalization of the mobile
telecommunication systems. The implementation of these services on
satellite systems, particularly for broadcast and multicast applications to
complement terrestrial services is ideal since satellite systems are capable
of providing global coverage in areas not served by terrestrial
telecommunication services. However, the main bottleneck of such
systems is the scarcity of radio resources for supporting multimedia
applications which has resulted in the rapid growth in research efforts for
deriving efficient radio resource management techniques. This issue is
addressed in this thesis, where the main emphasis is to design a dynamic
scheduling framework and algorithm that can improve the overall
performance of the radio resource management strategy of a UMTS
compatible satellite network, taking into account the unique characteristics
of wireless channel conditions.
This thesis will initially be focused on the design of the network and
functional architecture of a UMTS -compatible satellite network. Based on
this architecture, an effective scheduling framework is designed, which
can provide different types of resource assigning strategies. A functional
model of scheduler is defined to describe the behaviours and interactions
between different functional entities.
An OPNET simulation model with a complete network protocol stack is
developed to validate the performance of the scheduling algorithms
implemented in the satellite network. Different types of traffic are
considered for the OPNET simulation, such as the Poisson Process, ONOFF
Source and Self Similar Process, so that the performance of
scheduling algorithm can be analyzed for different types of services.
A novel scheduling algorithm is proposed to optimise the channel
utilisation by considering the characteristics of the wireless channel, which
are bursty and location dependent. In order to overcome the channel
errors, different code rates are applied for the user under different channel
conditions. The proposed scheduling algorithm is designed to give higher
priority to users with higher code rate, so that the throughput of network is
optimized and at the same time, maintaining the end users¿ service level
agreements. The fairness of the proposed scheduling algorithm is
validated using OPNET simulation. The simulation results show that the
algorithm can fairly allocate resource to different connections not only
among different service classes but also within the same service class
depending on their QoS attributes.Inmarsat Global Ltd. BGAN and the European Space Agency (ESA
