Constructing IGA-suitable planar parameterization from complex CAD boundary by domain partition and global/local optimization
In this paper, we propose a general framework for constructing IGA-suitable
planar B-spline parameterizations from given complex CAD boundaries consisting
of a set of B-spline curves. Instead of forming the computational domain by a
simple boundary, planar domains with high genus and more complex boundary
curves are considered. Firstly, some pre-processing operations including
B\'ezier extraction and subdivision are performed on each boundary curve in
order to generate a high-quality planar parameterization; then a robust planar
domain partition framework is proposed to construct high-quality patch-meshing
results with few singularities from the discrete boundary formed by connecting
the end points of the resulting boundary segments. After the topology
information generation of quadrilateral decomposition, the optimal placement of
interior B\'ezier curves corresponding to the interior edges of the
quadrangulation is constructed by a global optimization method to achieve a
patch-partition with high quality. Finally, after the imposition of
C1=G1-continuity constraints on the interface of neighboring B\'ezier patches
with respect to each quad in the quadrangulation, the high-quality B\'ezier
patch parameterization is obtained by a C1-constrained local optimization
method to achieve uniform and orthogonal iso-parametric structures while
keeping the continuity conditions between patches. The efficiency and
robustness of the proposed method are demonstrated by several examples which
are compared to results obtained by the skeleton-based parameterization
approach
Generalized Debye Sources Based EFIE Solver on Subdivision Surfaces
The electric field integral equation is a well known workhorse for obtaining
fields scattered by a perfect electric conducting (PEC) object. As a result,
the nuances and challenges of solving this equation have been examined for a
while. Two recent papers motivate the effort presented in this paper. Unlike
traditional work that uses equivalent currents defined on surfaces, recent
research proposes a technique that results in well conditioned systems by
employing generalized Debye sources (GDS) as unknowns. In a complementary
effort, some of us developed a method that exploits the same representation for
both the geometry (subdivision surface representations) and functions defined
on the geometry, also known as isogeometric analysis (IGA). The challenge in
generalizing GDS method to a discretized geometry is the complexity of the
intermediate operators. However, thanks to our earlier work on subdivision
surfaces, the additional smoothness of geometric representation permits
discretizing these intermediate operations. In this paper, we employ both ideas
to present a well conditioned GDS-EFIE. Here, the intermediate surface
Laplacian is well discretized by using subdivision basis. Likewise, using
subdivision basis to represent the sources, results in an efficient and
accurate IGA framework. Numerous results are presented to demonstrate the
efficacy of the approach
Subdivision Shell Elements with Anisotropic Growth
A thin shell finite element approach based on Loop's subdivision surfaces is
proposed, capable of dealing with large deformations and anisotropic growth. To
this end, the Kirchhoff-Love theory of thin shells is derived and extended to
allow for arbitrary in-plane growth. The simplicity and computational
efficiency of the subdivision thin shell elements is outstanding, which is
demonstrated on a few standard loading benchmarks. With this powerful tool at
hand, we demonstrate the broad range of possible applications by numerical
solution of several growth scenarios, ranging from the uniform growth of a
sphere, to boundary instabilities induced by large anisotropic growth. Finally,
it is shown that the problem of a slowly and uniformly growing sheet confined
in a fixed hollow sphere is equivalent to the inverse process where a sheet of
fixed size is slowly crumpled in a shrinking hollow sphere in the frictionless,

Mathematics and Morphogenesis of the City: A Geometrical Approach
Cities are living organisms. They are out of equilibrium, open systems that
never stop developing and sometimes die. The local geography can be compared to
a shell constraining its development. In brief, a city's current layout is a
step in a running morphogenesis process. Thus cities display a huge diversity
of shapes and none of traditional models from random graphs, complex networks
theory or stochastic geometry takes into account geometrical, functional and
dynamical aspects of a city in the same framework. We present here a global
mathematical model dedicated to cities that permits describing, manipulating
and explaining cities' overall shape and layout of their street systems. This
street-based framework conciliates the topological and geometrical sides of the
problem. From the static analysis of several French towns (topology of first
and second order, anisotropy, streets scaling) we make the hypothesis that the
development of a city follows a logic of division / extension of space. We
propose a dynamical model that mimics this logic and which from simple general
rules and a few parameters succeeds in generating a large diversity of cities
and in reproducing the general features the static analysis has pointed out.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figure
Conformational Dynamics of Supramolecular Protein Assemblies in the EMDB
The Electron Microscopy Data Bank (EMDB) is a rapidly growing repository for
the dissemination of structural data from single-particle reconstructions of
supramolecular protein assemblies including motors, chaperones, cytoskeletal
assemblies, and viral capsids. While the static structure of these assemblies
provides essential insight into their biological function, their conformational
dynamics and mechanics provide additional important information regarding the
mechanism of their biological function. Here, we present an unsupervised
computational framework to analyze and store for public access the
conformational dynamics of supramolecular protein assemblies deposited in the
EMDB. Conformational dynamics are analyzed using normal mode analysis in the
finite element framework, which is used to compute equilibrium thermal
fluctuations, cross-correlations in molecular motions, and strain energy
distributions for 452 of the 681 entries stored in the EMDB at present. Results
for the viral capsid of hepatitis B, ribosome-bound termination factor RF2, and
GroEL are presented in detail and validated with all-atom based models. The
conformational dynamics of protein assemblies in the EMDB may be useful in the
interpretation of their biological function, as well as in the classification
and refinement of EM-based structures.Comment: Associated online data bank available at:

Progressive refinement rendering of implicit surfaces
The visualisation of implicit surfaces can be an inefficient task when such surfaces are complex and highly detailed. Visualising a surface by first converting it to a
polygon mesh may lead to an excessive polygon count. Visualising a surface by direct ray casting is often a slow procedure. In this paper we present a progressive refinement renderer for implicit surfaces that are Lipschitz continuous. The renderer first displays a low resolution estimate of what the final image is going to be and, as the computation progresses, increases the quality of this estimate at an interactive frame rate. This renderer provides a quick previewing facility that significantly reduces the design cycle of a new and complex implicit surface. The renderer is also capable of completing an image faster than a conventional implicit surface rendering algorithm based on ray casting
A Framework for Dynamic Terrain with Application in Off-road Ground Vehicle Simulations
The dissertation develops a framework for the visualization of dynamic terrains for use in interactive real-time 3D systems. Terrain visualization techniques may be classified as either static or dynamic. Static terrain solutions simulate rigid surface types exclusively; whereas dynamic solutions can also represent non-rigid surfaces. Systems that employ a static terrain approach lack realism due to their rigid nature. Disregarding the accurate representation of terrain surface interaction is rationalized because of the inherent difficulties associated with providing runtime dynamism. Nonetheless, dynamic terrain systems are a more correct solution because they allow the terrain database to be modified at run-time for the purpose of deforming the surface. Many established techniques in terrain visualization rely on invalid assumptions and weak computational models that hinder the use of dynamic terrain. Moreover, many existing techniques do not exploit the capabilities offered by current computer hardware. In this research, we present a component framework for terrain visualization that is useful in research, entertainment, and simulation systems. In addition, we present a novel method for deforming the terrain that can be used in real-time, interactive systems. The development of a component framework unifies disparate works under a single architecture. The high-level nature of the framework makes it flexible and adaptable for developing a variety of systems, independent of the static or dynamic nature of the solution. Currently, there are only a handful of documented deformation techniques and, in particular, none make explicit use of graphics hardware. The approach developed by this research offloads extra work to the graphics processing unit; in an effort to alleviate the overhead associated with deforming the terrain. Off-road ground vehicle simulation is used as an application domain to demonstrate the practical nature of the framework and the deformation technique. In order to realistically simulate terrain surface interactivity with the vehicle, the solution balances visual fidelity and speed. Accurately depicting terrain surface interactivity in off-road ground vehicle simulations improves visual realism; thereby, increasing the significance and worth of the application. Systems in academia, government, and commercial institutes can make use of the research findings to achieve the real-time display of interactive terrain surfaces
