Applied Sensor Fault Detection, Identification and Data Reconstruction
Sensor fault detection and identification (SFD/I) has attracted considerable attention in military applications, especially when safety- or mission-critical issues are of paramount importance. Here, two readily implementable approaches for SFD/I are proposed through hierarchical clustering and self-organizing map neural networks. The proposed methodologies are capable of detecting sensor faults from a large group of sensors measuring different physical quantities and achieve SFD/I in a single stage. Furthermore, it is possible to reconstruct the measurements expected from the faulted sensor and thereby facilitate improved unit availability. The efficacy of the proposed approaches is demonstrated through the use of measurements from experimental trials on a gas turbine. Ultimately, the underlying principles are readily transferable to other complex industrial and military systems
Automated Observability Investigation of Analog Electronic Circuits using SPICE
In the present paper, a computer-aided approach
to fault observability investigation of linear analog circuits is developed. The method is based on sensitivity investigation of the test characteristics in the frequency domain. The test frequencies are selected maximizing the sensitivity of the magnitude of the test characteristics. Applying postprocessing of the simulation results using macrodefinitions in the graphical analyzer Probe, a fault observability investigation of the circuit is performed. A number of sensitivity measures are defined in Probe for observability investigation of multiple faults using pre-defined macrodefinitions. Power system fault prediction using artificial neural networks
The medium term goal of the research reported in this paper was the development of a major in-house suite of strategic computer aided network simulation and decision support tools to improve the management of power systems. This paper describes a preliminary research investigation to access the feasibility of using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) method to predict and detect faults at an early stage in power systems. To achieve this goal, an AI based detector has been developed to monitor and predict faults at an early stage on particular sections of power systems. The detector only requires external measurements taken from the input and output nodes of the power system. The AI detection system is capable of rapidly predicting a malfunction within the system . Simulation will normally take place using equivalent circuit representation. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are used to construct a hierarchical feed-forward structure which is the most important component in the fault detector. Simulation of a transmission line (2-port circuit ) has already been carried out and preliminary results using this system are promising. This approach provided satisfactory results with accuracy of 95% or higher
Diagnosing faults in autonomous robot plan execution
A major requirement for an autonomous robot is the capability to diagnose faults during plan execution in an uncertain environment. Many diagnostic researches concentrate only on hardware failures within an autonomous robot. Taking a different approach, the implementation of a Telerobot Diagnostic System that addresses, in addition to the hardware failures, failures caused by unexpected event changes in the environment or failures due to plan errors, is described. One feature of the system is the utilization of task-plan knowledge and context information to deduce fault symptoms. This forward deduction provides valuable information on past activities and the current expectations of a robotic event, both of which can guide the plan-execution inference process. The inference process adopts a model-based technique to recreate the plan-execution process and to confirm fault-source hypotheses. This technique allows the system to diagnose multiple faults due to either unexpected plan failures or hardware errors. This research initiates a major effort to investigate relationships between hardware faults and plan errors, relationships which were not addressed in the past. The results of this research will provide a clear understanding of how to generate a better task planner for an autonomous robot and how to recover the robot from faults in a critical environment
