    An online handwriting recognition system for Turkish

    Despite recent developments in Tablet PC technology, there has not been any applications for recognizing handwritings in Turkish. In this paper, we present an online handwritten text recognition system for Turkish, developed using the Tablet PC interface. However, even though the system is developed for Turkish, the addressed issues are common to online handwriting recognition systems in general. Several dynamic features are extracted from the handwriting data for each recorded point and Hidden Markov Models (HMM) are used to train letter and word models. We experimented with using various features and HMM model topologies, and report on the effects of these experiments. We started with first and second derivatives of the x and y coordinates and relative change in the pen pressure as initial features. We found that using two more additional features, that is, number of neighboring points and relative heights of each point with respect to the base-line improve the recognition rate. In addition, extracting features within strokes and using a skipping state topology improve the system performance as well. The improved system performance is 94% in recognizing handwritten words from a 1000-word lexicon

    Learning Model Structure from Data : an Application to On-Line Handwriting

    We present a learning strategy for Hidden Markov Models that may be used to cluster handwriting sequences or to learn a character model by identifying its main writing styles. Our approach aims at learning both the structure and parameters of a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) from the data. A byproduct of this learning strategy is the ability to cluster signals and identify allograph. We provide experimental results on artificial data that demonstrate the possibility to learn from data HMM parameters and topology. For a given topology, our approach outperforms in some cases that we identify standard Maximum Likelihood learning scheme. We also apply our unsupervised learning scheme on on-line handwritten signals for allograph clustering as well as for learning HMM models for handwritten digit recognition

    Segmental K-Means Learning with Mixture Distribution for HMM Based Handwriting Recognition

    This paper investigates the performance of hidden Markov models (HMMs) for handwriting recognition. The Segmental K-Means algorithm is used for updating the transition and observation probabilities, instead of the Baum-Welch algorithm. Observation probabilities are modelled as multi-variate Gaussian mixture distributions. A deterministic clustering technique is used to estimate the initial parameters of an HMM. Bayesian information criterion (BIC) is used to select the topology of the model. The wavelet transform is used to extract features from a grey-scale image, and avoids binarization of the image.</p

    Automatic online signature verification using HMMs with user-dependent structure

    Producción CientíficaA novel strategy for Automatic online Signature Verification based on hidden Markov models (HMM) with user-dependent structure is presented in this work. Under this approach, the number of states and Gaussians giving the optimal prediction results are independently selected for each user. With this simple strategy just three genuine signatures could be used for training, with an EER under 2.5% obtained for the basic set of raw signature parameters provided by the acquisition device.
