Unified clustering and communication protocol for wireless sensor networks
In this paper we present an energy-efficient cross layer protocol for providing application specific reservations in wireless senor networks called the “Unified Clustering and Communication Protocol ” (UCCP). Our modular cross layered framework satisfies three wireless sensor network requirements, namely, the QoS requirement of heterogeneous applications, energy aware clustering and data forwarding by relay sensor nodes. Our unified design approach is motivated by providing an integrated and viable solution for self organization and end-to-end communication is wireless sensor networks. Dynamic QoS based reservation guarantees are provided using a reservation-based TDMA approach. Our novel energy-efficient clustering approach employs a multi-objective optimization technique based on OR (operations research) practices. We adopt a simple hierarchy in which relay nodes forward data messages from cluster head to the sink, thus eliminating the overheads needed to maintain a routing protocol. Simulation results demonstrate that UCCP provides an energy-efficient and scalable solution to meet the application specific QoS demands in resource constrained sensor nodes. DISCO: Distributed Multi-domain SDN Controllers
Modern multi-domain networks now span over datacenter networks, enterprise
networks, customer sites and mobile entities. Such networks are critical and,
thus, must be resilient, scalable and easily extensible. The emergence of
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) protocols, which enables to decouple the data
plane from the control plane and dynamically program the network, opens up new
ways to architect such networks. In this paper, we propose DISCO, an open and
extensible DIstributed SDN COntrol plane able to cope with the distributed and
heterogeneous nature of modern overlay networks and wide area networks. DISCO
controllers manage their own network domain and communicate with each others to
provide end-to-end network services. This communication is based on a unique
lightweight and highly manageable control channel used by agents to
self-adaptively share aggregated network-wide information. We implemented DISCO
on top of the Floodlight OpenFlow controller and the AMQP protocol. We
demonstrated how DISCO's control plane dynamically adapts to heterogeneous
network topologies while being resilient enough to survive to disruptions and
attacks and providing classic functionalities such as end-point migration and
network-wide traffic engineering. The experimentation results we present are
organized around three use cases: inter-domain topology disruption, end-to-end
priority service request and virtual machine migration
On-demand or Spot? Selling the cloud to risk-averse customers
In Amazon EC2, cloud resources are sold through a combination of an on-demand
market, in which customers buy resources at a fixed price, and a spot market,
in which customers bid for an uncertain supply of excess resources. Standard
market environments suggest that an optimal design uses just one type of
market. We show the prevalence of a dual market system can be explained by
heterogeneous risk attitudes of customers. In our stylized model, we consider
unit demand risk-averse bidders. We show the model admits a unique equilibrium,
with higher revenue and higher welfare than using only spot markets.
Furthermore, as risk aversion increases, the usage of the on-demand market
increases. We conclude that risk attitudes are an important factor in cloud
resource allocation and should be incorporated into models of cloud markets.Comment: Appeared at WINE 201
Two issues in reservation establishment
This paper addresses two issues related to resource reservation establishment in packet switched networks o ering realtime services. The rst issue arises out of the natural tension between the local nature of reservations (i.e., they control the service provided on a particular link) and the end-to-end nature of application service requirements. How do reservation establishment protocols enable applications to receive their desired end-to-end service? We review the current onepass and two-pass approaches, and then propose a new hybrid approach called one-pass-with-advertising. The second issue in reservation establishment weconsider arises from the inevitable heterogeneity in network router capabilities. Some routers and subnets in the Internet will support realtime services and others, such as ethernets, will not. How can a reservation establishment mechanism enable applications to achieve the end-to-end service they desire in the face of this heterogeneity? We propose an approach involving replacement services and advertising to build end-to-end service out of heterogeneous per-link service o erings.
