Reconfigurable Antennas in mmWave MIMO Systems
The key obstacle to achieving the full potential of the millimeter wave
(mmWave) band has been the poor propagation characteristics of wireless signals
in this band. One approach to overcome this issue is to use antennas that can
support higher gains while providing beam adaptability and diversity, i.e.,
reconfigurable antennas. In this article, we present a new architecture for
mmWave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications that uses a new
class of reconfigurable antennas. More specifically, the proposed lens-based
antennas can support multiple radiation patterns while using a single radio
frequency chain. Moreover, by using a beam selection network, each antenna beam
can be steered in the desired direction. Further, using the proposed
reconfigurable antenna in a MIMO architecture, we propose a new signal
processing algorithm that uses the additional degrees of freedom provided by
the antennas to overcome propagation issues at mmWave frequencies. Our
simulation results show that the proposed reconfigurable antenna MIMO
architecture significantly enhances the performance of mmWave communication
systems
On-Orbit Validation of a Framework for Spacecraft-Initiated Communication Service Requests with NASA's SCaN Testbed
We design, analyze, and experimentally validate a framework for demand-based allocation of high-performance space communication service in which the user spacecraft itself initiates a request for service. Leveraging machine-to-machine communications, the automated process has potential to improve the responsiveness and efficiency of space network operations. We propose an augmented ground station architecture in which a hemispherical-pattern antenna allows for reception of service requests sent from any user spacecraft within view. A suite of ground-based automation software acts upon these direct-to-Earth requests and allocates access to high-performance service through a ground station or relay satellite in response to immediate user demand. A software-defined radio transceiver, optimized for reception of weak signals from the helical antenna, is presented. Design and testing of signal processing equipment and a software framework to handle service requests is discussed. Preliminary results from on-orbit demonstrations with a testbed onboard the International Space Station are presented to verify feasibility of the concept

Adaptive multibeam phased array design for a Spacelab experiment
The parametric tradeoff analyses and design for an Adaptive Multibeam Phased Array (AMPA) for a Spacelab experiment are described. This AMPA Experiment System was designed with particular emphasis to maximize channel capacity and minimize implementation and cost impacts for future austere maritime and aeronautical users, operating with a low gain hemispherical coverage antenna element, low effective radiated power, and low antenna gain-to-system noise temperature ratio
A high gain antenna system for airborne satellite communication applications
A high gain antenna for commercial aviation satellites communication is discussed. Electromagnetic and practical design considerations as well as candidate systems implementation are presented. An evaluation of these implementation schemes is given, resulting in the selection of a simple top mounted aerodynamic phased array antenna with a remotely located beam steering unit. This concept has been developed into a popular product known as the Canadian Marconi Company CMA-2100. A description of the technical details is followed by a summary of results from the first production antennas
Wideband and UWB antennas for wireless applications. A comprehensive review
A comprehensive review concerning the geometry, the manufacturing technologies, the materials, and the numerical techniques, adopted for the analysis and design of wideband and ultrawideband (UWB) antennas for wireless applications, is presented. Planar, printed, dielectric, and wearable antennas, achievable on laminate (rigid and flexible), and textile dielectric substrates are taken into account. The performances of small, low-profile, and dielectric resonator antennas are illustrated paying particular attention to the application areas concerning portable devices (mobile phones, tablets, glasses, laptops, wearable computers, etc.) and radio base stations. This information provides a guidance to the selection of the different antenna geometries in terms of bandwidth, gain, field polarization, time-domain response, dimensions, and materials useful for their realization and integration in modern communication systems
Mixed-Mode Sensitivity Analysis of a Combined Differential and Common Mode Active Receiving Antenna Providing Near-Hemispherical Field-of-View Coverage
A theoretical framework for a mixed differential and common mode sensitivity analysis of active receiving antennas is presented, which includes the derivation of a novel set of noise parameters for dual-mode balanced amplifiers. The analysis is applied to an example of a mixed-mode active wire antenna design, consisting of an integrated monopole and dipole structure. Results of numerical simulations and experimental measurements are presented which show that, for a single-polarized design, the judicious use of both differential and common modes enables the field-of-view coverage to be extended over the entire hemisphere with a variation in receiving sensitivity of less than 3 dB in the E-plane
GPS compound eye attitude and navigation sensor and method
The present invention is a GPS system for navigation and attitude determination, comprising a sensor array including a convex hemispherical mounting structure having a plurality of mounting surfaces, and a plurality of antennas mounted to the mounting surfaces for receiving signals from space vehicles of a GPS constellation. The present invention also includes a receiver for collecting the signals and making navigation and attitude determinations. In an alternate embodiment the present invention may include two opposing convex hemispherical mounting structures, each of the mounting structures having a plurality of mounting surfaces, and a plurality of antennas mounted to the mounting surfaces
