Developing national level informatics competencies for undergraduate nurses : methodological approaches from Australia and Canada

    Get PDF
Health information systems are being implemented in countries by governments and regional health authorities in an effort to modernize healthcare. With these changes, there has emerged a demand by healthcare organizations for nurses graduating from college and university programs to have acquired nursing informatics competencies that would allow them to work in clinical practice settings (e.g. hospitals, clinics, home care etc). In this paper we examine the methods employed by two different countries in developing national level nursing informatics competencies expected of undergraduate nurses prior to graduation (i.e. Australia, Canada). This work contributes to the literature by describing the science and methods of nursing informatics competency development at a national level

Abstract The study recognized the importance of healthcare informatics in today’s dynamic health systems, and narrows down to how nursing informatics, a component of healthcare informatics, can provide efficient and effective healthcare delivery. Hence, underpinned by the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT), the study aimed at situating research activities on nursing informatics within existing studies that have applied the theory to investigate healthcare informatics in general. The study adopted a systematic review of literature to explored online databases: Google Scholar and Ebscohost from 2014 to 2019. The search returned a total of 205 articles for the specified period. However, only 8 eligible studies were found to be related specifically to nursing informatics. The study also revealed that performance expectancy and effort expectancy (respectively), both being constructs of the UTAUT, are the dominating factors influencing the acceptance/adoption/use of nursing informatics among the papers under review. The study recommends that researchers should further explore the use of nursing informatics technologies in healthcare. In addition; nursing informatics system designers should factor in the effectiveness and ease of use of the technologies for easy usage. On the other hand, the stakeholders in medical field are called upon to provide the enabling infrastructure to enhance the use of nursing informatics technologies

Bioinformatics, Healthcare Informatics and Analytics: An Imperative for Improved Healthcare System

Healthcare Informatics focuses on health data, information and knowledge, including their collection, processing, analysis and use. Bioinformatics employ computational tools and techniques to study and analyse large biological databases and to absolutely understand disease and grasp the genetics and proteomics by relating them with healthcare data. The focus is on processing genomic and proteomics data for basic research in biology, but also medicine, drug discovery, and related areas. Analytics in healthcare came as a result of large healthcare data that are being gathered electronically. Data analytics is proficient in terms of healthcare improvement, reduction in cost and safety of lives. Applications of data analytics in healthcare is as a result of the eruption in data to mine understandings so as to make informed decisions. This paper reviews bioinformatics, Healthcare Informatics and Analytics as an imperative for an improved Healthcare System. It looks at the benefits, the contribution of each of them to improving healthcare system, the overlap among bioinformatics, healthcare Informatics and analytics and finally the future prospects of healthcare informatics and analytic

The paper is a review of existing literature on the importance of clinical informatics tools in promoting effective healthcare delivery. The study reports literature on clinical informatics types, benefits and challenges across the globe. The paper explains the dangers of medical errors and how clinical informatics tools can reduce medical errors, increase access to safe, effective and affordable treatment of illnesses, and promote evidence-based medicine. The paper identifies various challenges facing the use of clinical informatics in developing countries. The issues of digital divide in the use of clinical informatics tools, particularly among developedand developing countries of the world, are also discussed. The paper reveals that hospitals at various levels should embrace the use of clinical informatics tools in healthcare delivery, especially in developing countries where there are inadequate medical personnel. The paper has the potential to inform policy makers, improve practice and contribute to research in the area of social informatics. Keywords: clinical informatics, clinical informatics tools, healthcare, quality, literature revie

Increasing the Effectiveness of Clinical Practices with Health Informatics: Systematic Literature Review

    Get PDF
Healthcare informatics involves different areas and activities like data collection, data analysis, and knowledge sharing among health care professionals. Healthcare Informatics scholars have been contending that the advancement in the discipline can enable healthcare professionals to provide better care to patients and the public. The current study goal is to identify the effectiveness of health informatics in improving clinical nursing practice from recent literature. We followed the systematic literature review by reviewing research papers published in the period between 2009 until 2019. The extracted data showed that there are four main themes of the nursing practices that are affected positively by the implementation of healthcare informatics. Namely, they are promoting quality of healthcare, improving electronic documentation of nursing practice, improving technological competencies and leadership practices, and improving clinical decision making. We discuss the findings and identify gaps to better direct future research in this area

Clinical informatics has enormous potential to ensure healthcare quality in both developed and developing countries. This paper examines the status and challenges of clinical informatics in the South African health care sector, In a recent survey of major international research databases such as Scopus, it was observed that there is a gap in knowledge on clinical informatics particularly as related to the status and challenges in the country’s healthcare facilities . The current status and challenges of clinical informatics in South Africa has not been examined. The present study explores the the current status of clinical informatics in the South African  healthcare system as well as the challenges facing the development of clinical informatics in South Africa. Through a literature review, the paper provides a  conceptual background of clinical informatics, discusses the status and challenges of clinical informatics in South Africa. The last part of the paper discusses the  implications of the reviewed literature through a PEST analysis. The paper provides invaluable information on clinical informatics in South Africa that can be used to inform and support further studies in this growing field. The paper is a contribution to discussions and debates on the development of social informatics. Keywords: clinical informatics, status, challenges, ICT4D, Social informatics, South Afric
