    THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NOVEL SUSPENSION ARM WITH 2-DIMENSIONAL ACTUATION, FOR USE IN ADVANCED HARD DISK DRIVES

    As magnetic computer disks are developed to ever-greater data storage densities, the accuracy required for head positioning is moving beyond the accuracy provided by present technology using single-stage voice-coil motors in hard disk drives. This thesis details work to develop a novel active suspension arm with 2-dimensional actuation for use in advanced hard disk drives. The arm developed is capable of high-bandwidth data tracking as well as precision head flying height control motion. High-bandwidth data tracking is facilitated by the use of piezoelectric stack actuator, positioned closer to the head. The suspension arm is also capable of motion in the orthogonal axis. This motion represents active flying height control to maintain the correct altitude during drive operation. To characterise the suspension arm's structural dynamics, a high-resolution measurement system based on the optical beam deflection technique has been developed. This has enabled the accurate measurement of minute end-deflections of the suspension arm in 2-dimensions, to sub-nanometre resolution above noise. The design process of the suspension arm has led into the development of novel piezoelectric-actuated arms. In the work involving lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thick films as actuators, work in this thesis shows that reinforcing the films with fibre improves the overall actuation characteristics of the thick films. This discovery benefits applications such as structural health monitoring. The final suspension arm design has been adopted because it is simple in design, easier to integrate within current hard disk drive environment and easier to fabricate in mass. Closed-loop control algorithms based on proportional, integral and derivative (PID) controller techniques have been developed and implemented to demonstrate high bandwidths that have been achieved. The suspension arm developed presents an important solution in head-positioning technology in that it offers much higher bandwidths for data tracking and flying height control; both very essential in achieving even higher data storage densities on magnetic disks at much reduced head flying heights, compared to those in existing hard disk drives

    Monitoring of the piston ring-pack and cylinder liner interface in diesel engines through acoustic emission measurements

    Investigation of novel condition monitoring systems for diesel engines has received much recent attention due to the increasing demands placed upon engine components and the limitations of conventional techniques. This thesis documents experimental research conducted to assess the monitoring capabilities of Acoustic Emission (AE) analysis. In particular it focuses on the possibility of monitoring the piston ring-pack and cylinder liner interface, a critical engine sub-system for which there are currently few practical monitoring options. A series of experiments were performed on large, two-stroke and small, four-stroke diesel engines. Tests under normal operating conditions developed a detailed understanding of typical AE generation in terms of both the source mechanisms and the characteristics of the resulting activity. This was supplemented by specific tests to investigate possible AE generation at the ring-pack/liner interface. For instance, for the small engines measures were taken to remove known AE sources in order to accentuate any activity originating at the interface whilst for the large engines the interfacial conditions were purposely deteriorated through the removal of the lubricating oil supply to one cylinder. Interpretation of the results was based mainly upon comparisons with published work encompassing both the expected ring-pack behaviour and AE generation from tribological processes. This provided a strong indication that the source of the ring-pack/liner AE activity was the boundary frictional losses. The ability to monitor this process may be of significant benefit to engine operators as it enhances the diagnostic information currently available and may be incorporated into predictive maintenance strategies. A further diagnostic technique considered was the possibility of using AE parameters combined with information of crankshaft speed fluctuations to evaluate engine balance and identify underperforming cylinders.EU Competitive and Sustainable Growth Programme, Project no: GRD2-2001-5001

    Energy-Optimal Control of Over-Actuated Systems - with Application to a Hybrid Feed Drive

    Over-actuated (or input-redundant) systems are characterized by the use of more actuators than the degrees of freedom to be controlled. They are widely used in modern mechanical systems to satisfy various control requirements, such as precision, motion range, fault tolerance, and energy efficiency. This thesis is particularly motivated by an over-actuated hybrid feed drive (HFD) which combines two complementary actuators with the aim to reduce energy consumption without sacrificing positioning accuracy in precision manufacturing. This work addresses the control challenges in achieving energy optimality without sacrificing control performance in so-called weakly input-redundant systems, which characterize the HFD and most other over-actuated systems used in practice. Using calculus of variations, an optimal control ratio/subspace is derived to specify the optimal relationship among the redundant actuators irrespective of external disturbances, leading to a new technique termed optimal control subspace-based (OCS) control allocation. It is shown that the optimal control ratio/subspace is non-causal; accordingly, a causal approximation is proposed and employed in energy-efficient structured controller design for the HFD. Moreover, the concept of control proxy is proposed as an accurate causal measurement of the deviation from the optimal control ratio/subspace. The proxy enables control allocation for weakly redundant systems to be converted into regulation problems, which can be tackled using standard controller design methodologies. Compared to an existing allocation technique, proxy-based control allocation is shown to dynamically allocate control efforts optimally without sacrificing control performance. The relationship between the proposed OCS control allocation and the traditional linear quadratic control approach is discussed for weakly input redundant systems. The two approaches are shown to be equivalent given perfect knowledge of disturbances; however, the OCS control allocation approach is shown to be more desirable for practical applications like the HFD, where disturbances are typically unknown. The OCS control allocation approach is validated in simulations and machining experiments on the HFD; significant reductions in control energy without sacrificing positioning accuracy are achieved.PHDMechanical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Predictive maintenance using machine learning models is being used to protect assets in industry. In this paper, an architecture for predicting anomalies in industrial processes was proposed in which SMEs can be guided in implementing an IIoT architecture for predictive maintenance (PdM). This research was conducted to understand what machine learning architectures and models are generally used by industry for PdM. An overview of the concepts of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), machine learning (ML), and predictive maintenance (PdM) was provided, and through a systematic literature review, it was possible to understand their applications and which technologies enable their use. The survey revealed that PdM applications are increasingly common and that there are many studies on the development of new ML techniques. The survey conducted confirmed the usefulness of the artifact and showed the need for an architecture to guide the implementation of PdM. This research can be a contribution for SMEs, allowing them to become more efficient and reduce both production and maintenance costs in order to keep up with multinational companies
