    Business Analytics Revisited: A gap analysis of research and practice

    With the growing use of business analytics (BA), organisations have benefited from new ways to extract value from data and drive strategic, evidence-based decision making. However, much less thought about how Business Analytics contributes to business value in practice has been given. We have conducted an in-depth qualitative paper of fourteen semi-structured interviews of positions integral to BA within organisations using five value drivers and inhibiting factors that surround value generation. This paper takes a retrospective look at what has been done, and how well it compares to the practice of business analytics. This paper seeks to bridge the current knowledge gap through providing a holistic view of all five value factors and how they affect value generation. In order to answer the research question of “How does Business Analytics contribute to business value in organisations?”. The results of this research can be utilised by managers of firms creating value through data-driven decisions, as well as by others in the ecosystem for analysing business analytic solutions. As well as identifying in what ways business analytics contributes to value by bridging the gap between research and practice

    The Knowledge Application and Utilization Framework Applied to Defense COTS: A Research Synthesis for Outsourced Innovation

    Purpose -- Militaries of developing nations face increasing budget pressures, high operations tempo, a blitzing pace of technology, and adversaries that often meet or beat government capabilities using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies. The adoption of COTS products into defense acquisitions has been offered to help meet these challenges by essentially outsourcing new product development and innovation. This research summarizes extant research to develop a framework for managing the innovative and knowledge flows. Design/Methodology/Approach – A literature review of 62 sources was conducted with the objectives of identifying antecedents (barriers and facilitators) and consequences of COTS adoption. Findings – The DoD COTS literature predominantly consists of industry case studies, and there’s a strong need for further academically rigorous study. Extant rigorous research implicates the importance of the role of knowledge management to government innovative thinking that relies heavily on commercial suppliers. Research Limitations/Implications – Extant academically rigorous studies tend to depend on measures derived from work in information systems research, relying on user satisfaction as the outcome. Our findings indicate that user satisfaction has no relationship to COTS success; technically complex governmental purchases may be too distant from users or may have socio-economic goals that supersede user satisfaction. The knowledge acquisition and utilization framework worked well to explain the innovative process in COTS. Practical Implications – Where past research in the commercial context found technological knowledge to outweigh market knowledge in terms of importance, our research found the opposite. Managers either in government or marketing to government should be aware of the importance of market knowledge for defense COTS innovation, especially for commercial companies that work as system integrators. Originality/Value – From the literature emerged a framework of COTS product usage and a scale to measure COTS product appropriateness that should help to guide COTS product adoption decisions and to help manage COTS product implementations ex post

    How do environmental enterprise systems contribute to sustainability value? A practitioner-oriented framework

    Environmental enterprise systems (EES) are integrated software services that offer a platform to automate and manage environmental sustainability processes, data, risk and reporting. EES are widely used in organisations, but their return depends on nurturing value creating mechanisms and pathways. Since the organisational value of EES has not been well researched and documented in the information systems literature, we have undertaken an exploratory practitioner literature analysis. The findings indicate that EES investment spurs the development of EES competence and EES-enabled capability which are associated with environmental efficiency and competitive values. Based on these findings and drawing from the dynamic capability theory, we contribute an EES value framework. This paper also illustrates to business organisations how to leverage EES’s potential to improve environmental sustainability without trading off economic outcome

    Digital Resilience: A Conceptual Framework for Information Systems Research

    In this editorial, we explore the role of IS in shaping the capacity to recover from exogenous shocks. Based on a synthesis of existing literature, we discuss the interplay between IS and resilience, as examined by various streams of research, and consolidate these insights under the banner of “digital resilience.” Our exploration culminates in a new conceptual framework of digital resilience from which we formulate avenues for future research. Through this work, we aim to encourage and support further research and practical strategies focused on digital resilience, ultimately strengthening our collective capacity to navigate the diverse disruptions of our shared future

    Digital Sustainability in Information Systems Research: Conceptual Foundations and Future Directions

    In this editorial, we develop the concept of digital sustainability for the IS community. By systematically reviewing the Green IT and Green IS literatures, we show that the IS field has lagged behind current discourse in practice and therefore lacks the conceptualization of the relationships between digital technologies and sustainability. Digital sustainability is defined in this editorial as the development and deployment of digital resources and artifacts toward improving the environment, society, and economic welfare. We hope that this editorial motivates IS researchers to engage in digital sustainability as an emerging research area

    The role of the social and technical factors in creating business value from big data analytics: A meta-analysis

    Big data analytics (BDA) has recently gained importance as an emerging technology for handling big data. The use of advanced techniques with differing levels of intelligence, such as descriptive, predictive, prescriptive, and autonomous analytics, is expected to create value for firms. By viewing BDA as a sociotechnical system, we conduct a meta-analysis of 107 individual studies to integrate prior evidence on the role of the technical and social factors of BDA in creating BDA business value. The findings underline the predominant role of the social components in enhancing firm performance, such as the BDA system’s human factors and a nurturing organizational structure, in contrast to the minor role of the technological factors. However, both the technical and social factors are found to be strong determinants of BDA business value. Through the combined lens of sociotechnical theory and the IS business value framework, we contribute to research and practice by enhancing the understanding of the main technical and social determinants of BDA business value at the firm level

    Of BI research : a tale of two communities

    The Business intelligence (BI) literature is in flux, yet the knowledge about its varying theoretical roots remains elusive. This state of affairs draws from two different scientific communities (informatics and business) that have generated multiple research streams, which duplicate research, neglect each other’s contributions, and overlook important research gaps. In response, we structure the BI scientific landscape and map its evolution to offer scholars a clear view of where research on BI stands and the way forward. For this endeavor, we systematically review articles published in top-tier ABS journals and identify 120 articles covering 35 years of scientific research on BI. We then run a co-citation analysis of selected articles and their reference lists. This yields the structuring of BI scholarly community around six research clusters: Environmental Scanning (ES), Competitive Intelligence (CI), Market Intelligence (MI), Decision Support (DS), Analytics Technologies (AT), and Analytics Capabilities (AC). The Co-citation network exposed overlapping and divergent theoretical roots across the six clusters and permitted mapping the evolution of BI research following two pendulum swings. Our article contributes by 1) structuring the theoretical landscape of BI research, 2) deciphering the theoretical roots of BI literature, 3) mapping the evolution of BI scholarly community, and 4) suggesting an agenda for future research.© 2020 Emerald Publishing Limited.
