    Combining SOA and BPM Technologies for Cross-System Process Automation

    This paper summarizes the results of an industry case study that introduced a cross-system business process automation solution based on a combination of SOA and BPM standard technologies (i.e., BPMN, BPEL, WSDL). Besides discussing major weaknesses of the existing, custom-built, solution and comparing them against experiences with the developed prototype, the paper presents a course of action for transforming the current solution into the proposed solution. This includes a general approach, consisting of four distinct steps, as well as specific action items that are to be performed for every step. The discussion also covers language and tool support and challenges arising from the transformation

    The complexity, relevance and critical nature of the decommissioning of nuclear power plants (NPP) are of great significance in today\u27s society. Following the catastrophe in Fukushima a shift in the general public\u27s perception of NPP took place throughout the world and in Europe in particular. In this dissertation interdisciplinary methods will be discussed to identify solutions which take into account the technological complexity and organizational issues involved in the dismantling and decommissioning process of NPP. Operations research, lean management, simultaneous engineering, cost analysis, multiple-objective optimization, project management, software tools are powerful concepts and methodologies when undertaking the dismantling and decommissioning process of NPP. Besides the presentation of a wide range of terminological and methodological definitions and technical terms based on the Literature Review, in the dissertation a framework for model development of a Multiple objective optimization problem (MOOP) will discussed focusing on empirical data from a virtual NPP. The theoretical foundation of the framework is at the intersection of two successful approaches used to describe and accomplish similar complex challenges, and the integration of state-of-the-art process approaches such as lean management. The procedural conception of the model is mainly leant on the OMEGA model (International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) (2008)). Mathematically the model is derived from Jones et. al. (1998). Finally the application of the model using different software tools (AIMMS, MATLAB, R and SPSS) will be presented. In conclusion the work will be put into a position to venture a critical outlook and discussion for the future of the decommissioning and dismantling processes of NPP. The main goal of this dissertation is to define the requirements for the optimization of three objectives: Minimizing the total project cost, reducing the safety hazard (risk) and managing project duration. Also a description of how the programming language R and the AIMMS program interfaces with the OMEGA application and how R will be used to solve the MOOP will be given. The software Microsoft Project will be leveraged in order to model this objective

    The Human Cell Atlas White Paper

    The Human Cell Atlas (HCA) will be made up of comprehensive reference maps of all human cells - the fundamental units of life - as a basis for understanding fundamental human biological processes and diagnosing, monitoring, and treating disease. It will help scientists understand how genetic variants impact disease risk, define drug toxicities, discover better therapies, and advance regenerative medicine. A resource of such ambition and scale should be built in stages, increasing in size, breadth, and resolution as technologies develop and understanding deepens. We will therefore pursue Phase 1 as a suite of flagship projects in key tissues, systems, and organs. We will bring together experts in biology, medicine, genomics, technology development and computation (including data analysis, software engineering, and visualization). We will also need standardized experimental and computational methods that will allow us to compare diverse cell and tissue types - and samples across human communities - in consistent ways, ensuring that the resulting resource is truly global. This document, the first version of the HCA White Paper, was written by experts in the field with feedback and suggestions from the HCA community, gathered during recent international meetings. The White Paper, released at the close of this yearlong planning process, will be a living document that evolves as the HCA community provides additional feedback, as technological and computational advances are made, and as lessons are learned during the construction of the atlas

    Over the past few decades, modern information technology has made a significant impact on people’s daily lives worldwide. In the field of health care and prevention, there has been a progressing penetration of assistive health services such as personal health records, supporting apps for chronic diseases, or preventive cardiological monitoring. In 2020, the range of personal health services appeared to be almost unmanageable, accompanied by a multitude of different data formats and technical interfaces. The exchange of health-related data between different healthcare providers or platforms may therefore be difficult or even impossible. In addition, health professionals are increasingly confronted with medical data that were not acquired by themselves, but by an algorithmic “black box”. Even further, externally recorded data tend to be incompatible with the data models of classical healthcare information systems.From the individual’s perspective, digital services allow for the monitoring of their own health status. However, such services can also overwhelm their users, especially elderly people, with too many features or barely comprehensible information. It therefore seems highly relevant to examine whether such “always at hand” services exceed the digital literacy levels of average citizens.In this context, this reprint presents innovative, health-related applications or services emphasizing the role of user-centered information technology, with a special focus on one of the aforementioned aspects

    Unmet goals of tracking: within-track heterogeneity of students' expectations for

    Educational systems are often characterized by some form(s) of ability grouping, like tracking. Although substantial variation in the implementation of these practices exists, it is always the aim to improve teaching efficiency by creating homogeneous groups of students in terms of capabilities and performances as well as expected pathways. If students’ expected pathways (university, graduate school, or working) are in line with the goals of tracking, one might presume that these expectations are rather homogeneous within tracks and heterogeneous between tracks. In Flanders (the northern region of Belgium), the educational system consists of four tracks. Many students start out in the most prestigious, academic track. If they fail to gain the necessary credentials, they move to the less esteemed technical and vocational tracks. Therefore, the educational system has been called a 'cascade system'. We presume that this cascade system creates homogeneous expectations in the academic track, though heterogeneous expectations in the technical and vocational tracks. We use data from the International Study of City Youth (ISCY), gathered during the 2013-2014 school year from 2354 pupils of the tenth grade across 30 secondary schools in the city of Ghent, Flanders. Preliminary results suggest that the technical and vocational tracks show more heterogeneity in student’s expectations than the academic track. If tracking does not fulfill the desired goals in some tracks, tracking practices should be questioned as tracking occurs along social and ethnic lines, causing social inequality
