Digital transformation will experience massive connections and massive data handling. This will imply a growing demand for computing in communication networks due to network softwarization. Moreover, digital transformation will host very sensitive verticals, requiring high end-to-end reliability and low latency. Accordingly, the emerging concept “in-network computing” has been arising. This means integrating the network communications with computing and also performing computations on the transport path of the network. This can be used to deliver actionable information directly to end users instead of raw data. However, this change of paradigm to in-network computing raises disruptive challenges to the current communication networks. In-network computing (i) expects the network to host general-purpose softwarized network functions and (ii) encourages the packet payload to be modified. Yet, today’s networks are designed to focus on packet forwarding functions, and packet payloads should not be touched in the forwarding path, under the current end-to-end transport mechanisms. This dissertation presents fullstack in-network computing solutions, jointly designed from network and computing perspectives to accelerate data analysis applications, specifically for acoustic data analysis. In the computing domain, two design paradigms of computational logic, namely progressive computing and traffic filtering, are proposed in this dissertation for data reconstruction and feature extraction tasks. Two widely used practical use cases, Blind Source Separation (BSS) and anomaly detection, are selected to demonstrate the design of computing modules for data reconstruction and feature extraction tasks in the in-network computing scheme, respectively. Following these two design paradigms of progressive computing and traffic filtering, this dissertation designs two computing modules: progressive ICA (pICA) and You only hear once (Yoho) for BSS and anomaly detection, respectively. These lightweight computing modules can cooperatively perform computational tasks along the forwarding path. In this way, computational virtual functions can be introduced into the network, addressing the first challenge mentioned above, namely that the network should be able to host general-purpose softwarized network functions. In this dissertation, quantitative simulations have shown that the computing time of pICA and Yoho in in-network computing scenarios is significantly reduced, since pICA and Yoho are performed, simultaneously with the data forwarding. At the same time, pICA guarantees the same computing accuracy, and Yoho’s computing accuracy is improved. Furthermore, this dissertation proposes a stateful transport module in the network domain to support in-network computing under the end-to-end transport architecture. The stateful transport module extends the IP packet header, so that network packets carry message-related metadata (message-based packaging). Additionally, the forwarding layer of the network device is optimized to be able to process the packet payload based on the computational state (state-based transport component). The second challenge posed by in-network computing has been tackled by supporting the modification of packet payloads. The two computational modules mentioned above and the stateful transport module form the designed in-network computing solutions. By merging pICA and Yoho with the stateful transport module, respectively, two emulation systems, i.e., in-network pICA and in-network Yoho, have been implemented in the Communication Networks Emulator (ComNetsEmu). Through quantitative emulations, the experimental results showed that in-network pICA accelerates the overall service time of BSS by up to 32.18%. On the other hand, using in-network Yoho accelerates the overall service time of anomaly detection by a maximum of 30.51%. These are promising results for the design and actual realization of future communication networks

Fast Independent Component Analysis (FastICA) is a statistical method used to separate signals from an unknown mixture without any prior knowledge about the signals. This method has been used in many applications like the separation of fetal and maternal Electrocardiogram (ECG) for pregnant women. This thesis presents an implementation of a fixed-point FastICA in field programmable gate array (FPGA). The proposed design can separate up to four signals using four sensors. QR decomposition is used to improve the speed of evaluation of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the covariance matrix. Moreover, a symmetric orthogonalization of the unit estimation algorithm is implemented using an iterative technique to speed up the search algorithm for higher order data input. The hardware is implemented using Xilinx virtex5-XC5VLX50t chip. The proposed design can process 128 samples for the four sensors in less than 63 ns when the design is simulated using 10 MHz clock

    Get PDF
The goal of this research was to evaluate and compare three types of brain computer interface (BCI) systems, P300, steady state visually evoked potentials (SSVEP) and Hybrid as virtual spelling paradigms. Hybrid BCI is an innovative approach to combine the P300 and SSVEP. However, it is challenging to process the resulting hybrid signals to extract both information simultaneously and effectively. The major step executed toward the advancement to modern BCI system was to move the BCI techniques from traditional LED system to electronic LCD monitor. Such a transition allows not only to develop the graphics of interest but also to generate objects flickering at different frequencies. There were pilot experiments performed for designing and tuning the parameters of the spelling paradigms including peak detection for different range of frequencies of SSVEP BCI, placement of objects on LCD monitor, design of the spelling keyboard, and window time for the SSVEP peak detection processing. All the experiments were devised to evaluate the performance in terms of the spelling accuracy, region error, and adjacency error among all of the paradigms: P300, SSVEP and Hybrid. Due to the different nature of P300 and SSVEP, designing a hybrid P300-SSVEP signal processing scheme demands significant amount of research work in this area. Eventually, two critical questions in hybrid BCl are: (1) which signal processing strategy can best measure the user\u27s intent and (2) what a suitable paradigm is to fuse these two techniques in a simple but effective way. In order to answer these questions, this project focused mainly on developing signal processing and classification technique for hybrid BCI. Hybrid BCI was implemented by extracting the specific information from brain signals, selecting optimum features which contain maximum discrimination information about the speller characters of our interest and by efficiently classifying the hybrid signals. The designed spellers were developed with the aim to improve quality of life of patients with disability by utilizing visually controlled BCI paradigms. The paradigms consist of electrodes to record electroencephalogram signal (EEG) during stimulation, a software to analyze the collected data, and a computing device where the subject’s EEG is the input to estimate the spelled character. Signal processing phase included preliminary tasks as preprocessing, feature extraction, and feature selection. Captured EEG data are usually a superposition of the signals of interest with other unwanted signals from muscles, and from non-biological artifacts. The accuracy of each trial and average accuracy for subjects were computed. Overall, the average accuracy of the P300 and SSVEP spelling paradigm was 84% and 68.5 %. P300 spelling paradigms have better accuracy than both the SSVEP and hybrid paradigm. Hybrid paradigm has the average accuracy of 79 %. However, hybrid system is faster in time and more soothing to look than other paradigms. This work is significant because it has great potential for improving the BCI research in design and application of clinically suitable speller paradigm

This paper discusses the reduction of background noise in an industrial environment to extend human-machine-interaction. In the Industry 4.0 era, the mass development of voice control (speech recognition) in various industrial applications is possible, especially as related to augmented reality (such as hands-free control via voice commands). As Industry 4.0 relies heavily on radiofrequency technologies, some brief insight into this problem is provided, including the Internet of things (IoT) and 5G deployment. This study was carried out in cooperation with the industrial partner Brose CZ spol. s.r.o., where sound recordings were made to produce a dataset. The experimental environment comprised three workplaces with background noise above 100 dB, consisting of a laser/magnetic welder and a press. A virtual device was developed from a given dataset in order to test selected commands from a commercial speech recognizer from Microsoft. We tested a hybrid algorithm for noise reduction and its impact on voice command recognition efficiency. Using virtual devices, the study was carried out on large speakers with 20 participants (10 men and 10 women). The experiments included a large number of repetitions (100 times for each command under different noise conditions). Statistical results confirmed the efficiency of the tested algorithms. Laser welding environment efficiency was 27% before applied filtering, 76% using the least mean square (LMS) algorithm, and 79% using LMS + independent component analysis (ICA). Magnetic welding environment efficiency was 24% before applied filtering, 70% with LMS, and 75% with LMS + ICA. Press workplace environment efficiency showed no success before applied filtering, was 52% with LMS, and was 54% with LMS + ICA.Web of Science6911096107

The proliferation of smartphones and other internet-enabled, sensor-equipped consumer devices enables us to sense and act upon the physical environment in unprecedented ways. This thesis considers Community Sense-and-Response (CSR) systems, a new class of web application for acting on sensory data gathered from participants' personal smart devices. The thesis describes how rare events can be reliably detected using a decentralized anomaly detection architecture that performs client-side anomaly detection and server-side event detection. After analyzing this decentralized anomaly detection approach, the thesis describes how weak but spatially structured events can be detected, despite significant noise, when the events have a sparse representation in an alternative basis. Finally, the thesis describes how the statistical models needed for client-side anomaly detection may be learned efficiently, using limited space, via coresets. The Caltech Community Seismic Network (CSN) is a prototypical example of a CSR system that harnesses accelerometers in volunteers' smartphones and consumer electronics. Using CSN, this thesis presents the systems and algorithmic techniques to design, build and evaluate a scalable network for real-time awareness of spatial phenomena such as dangerous earthquakes.</p

Biologically motivated information processing has been an important area of scientific research for decades. The central topic addressed in this dissertation is utilization of lateral inhibition and more generally, linear networks with recurrent connectivity along with complex-log conformal mapping in machine based implementations of information encoding, feature extraction and pattern recognition. The reasoning behind and method for spatially uniform implementation of inhibitory/excitatory network model in the framework of non-uniform log-polar transform is presented. For the space invariant connectivity model characterized by Topelitz-Block-Toeplitz matrix, the overall network response is obtained without matrix inverse operations providing the connection matrix generating function is bound by unity. It was shown that for the network with the inter-neuron connection function expandable in a Fourier series in polar angle, the overall network response is steerable. The decorrelating/whitening characteristics of networks with lateral inhibition are used in order to develop space invariant pre-whitening kernels specialized for specific category of input signals. These filters have extremely small memory footprint and are successfully utilized in order to improve performance of adaptive neural whitening algorithms. Finally, the method for feature extraction based on localized Independent Component Analysis (ICA) transform in log-polar domain and aided by previously developed pre-whitening filters is implemented. Since output codes produced by ICA are very sparse, a small number of non-zero coefficients was sufficient to encode input data and obtain reliable pattern recognition performance

This book presents the paper form of the Special Issue (SI) on Smart Urban Water Networks. The number and topics of the papers in the SI confirm the growing interest of operators and researchers for the new paradigm of smart networks, as part of the more general smart city. The SI showed that digital information and communication technology (ICT), with the implementation of smart meters and other digital devices, can significantly improve the modelling and the management of urban water networks, contributing to a radical transformation of the traditional paradigm of water utilities. The paper collection in this SI includes different crucial topics such as the reliability, resilience, and performance of water networks, innovative demand management, and the novel challenge of real-time control and operation, along with their implications for cyber-security. The SI collected fourteen papers that provide a wide perspective of solutions, trends, and challenges in the contest of smart urban water networks. Some solutions have already been implemented in pilot sites (i.e., for water network partitioning, cyber-security, and water demand disaggregation and forecasting), while further investigations are required for other methods, e.g., the data-driven approaches for real time control. In all cases, a new deal between academia, industry, and governments must be embraced to start the new era of smart urban water systems
