Corporate Social Responsibility: the institutionalization of ESG
Understanding the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on firm performance as it relates to industries reliant on technological innovation is a complex and perpetually evolving challenge. To thoroughly investigate this topic, this dissertation will adopt an economics-based structure to address three primary hypotheses. This structure allows for each hypothesis to essentially be a standalone empirical paper, unified by an overall analysis of the nature of impact that ESG has on firm performance. The first hypothesis explores the evolution of CSR to the modern quantified iteration of ESG has led to the institutionalization and standardization of the CSR concept. The second hypothesis fills gaps in existing literature testing the relationship between firm performance and ESG by finding that the relationship is significantly positive in long-term, strategic metrics (ROA and ROIC) and that there is no correlation in short-term metrics (ROE and ROS). Finally, the third hypothesis states that if a firm has a long-term strategic ESG plan, as proxied by the publication of CSR reports, then it is more resilience to damage from controversies. This is supported by the finding that pro-ESG firms consistently fared better than their counterparts in both financial and ESG performance, even in the event of a controversy. However, firms with consistent reporting are also held to a higher standard than their nonreporting peers, suggesting a higher risk and higher reward dynamic. These findings support the theory of good management, in that long-term strategic planning is both immediately economically beneficial and serves as a means of risk management and social impact mitigation. Overall, this contributes to the literature by fillings gaps in the nature of impact that ESG has on firm performance, particularly from a management perspective
Learning Spiking Neural Systems with the Event-Driven Forward-Forward Process
We develop a novel credit assignment algorithm for information processing
with spiking neurons without requiring feedback synapses. Specifically, we
propose an event-driven generalization of the forward-forward and the
predictive forward-forward learning processes for a spiking neural system that
iteratively processes sensory input over a stimulus window. As a result, the
recurrent circuit computes the membrane potential of each neuron in each layer
as a function of local bottom-up, top-down, and lateral signals, facilitating a
dynamic, layer-wise parallel form of neural computation. Unlike spiking neural
coding, which relies on feedback synapses to adjust neural electrical activity,
our model operates purely online and forward in time, offering a promising way
to learn distributed representations of sensory data patterns with temporal
spike signals. Notably, our experimental results on several pattern datasets
demonstrate that the even-driven forward-forward (ED-FF) framework works well
for training a dynamic recurrent spiking system capable of both classification
and reconstruction
Interview with Wolfgang Knauss
An oral history in four sessions (September 2019âJanuary 2020) with Wolfgang Knauss, von KĂĄrmĂĄn Professor of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics, Emeritus. Born in Germany in 1933, he speaks about his early life and experiences under the Nazi regime, his teenage years in Siegen and Heidelberg during the Allied occupation, and his move to Pasadena, California, in 1954 under the sponsorship of a local minister and his family. He enrolled in Caltech as an undergraduate in 1957, commencing a more than half-century affiliation with the Institute and GALCIT (today the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories of Caltech). He recalls the roots of his interest in aeronautics, his PhD solid mechanics studies with his advisor, M. Williams, and the GALCIT environment in the late 1950s and 1960s at the dawn of the Space Age, including the impact of Sputnik and classes with NASA astronauts. He discusses his experimental and theoretical work on materials deformation, dynamic fracture, and crack propagation, including his solid-propellant fuels research for NASA and the US Army, wide-ranging programs with the US Navy, and his pioneering micromechanics investigations and work on the time-dependent fracture of polymers in the 1990s.
He offers his perspective on GALCITâs academic culture, its solid mechanics and fluid mechanics programs, and its evolving administrative directions over the course of five decades, as well as its impact and reputation both within and beyond Caltech. He describes his work with Caltechâs undergraduate admissions committee and his scientific collaborations with numerous graduate students and postdocs and shares his recollections of GALCIT and other Caltech colleagues, including C. Babcock, D. Coles, R.P. Feynman, Y.C. Fung, G. Neugebauer, G. Housner, D. Hudson, H. Liepmann, A. Klein, G. Ravichandran, A. Rosakis, A. Roshko, and E. Sechler.

Co-design As Healing: Exploring The Experiences Of Participants Facing Mental Health Problems
This thesis is an exploration of the healing role of co-design in mental health. Although co-design projects conducted within mental health settings are rising, existing literature tends to focus on the object of design and its outcomes while the experiences of participants per se remain largely unexplored. The guiding research question of this study is not how we design things that improve mental health, but how co-designing, as an act, might do so.
The thesis presents two projects that were organized in collaboration with the mental health charity Islington Mind and the Psychosis Therapy Project (PTP) in London.
The project at Islington Mind used a structured design process inviting participants to design for wellbeing. A case study analysis provides insights on how participants were impacted, summarizing key challenges and opportunities.
The design at PTP worked towards creating a collective brief in an emergent fashion, finally culminating in a board game. The experiences of participants were explored through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), using semi-structured interview data. The analysis served to identify key themes characterising the experience of co-design such as contributing, connecting, thinking and intentioning. In addition, a mixed-methods analysis of questionnaires and interview data exploring participants' wellbeing, showed that all participants who engaged fairly consistently in the project improved after the project ended, although some participants' scores returned to baseline six months later.
Reflecting on both projects, an approach to facilitation within mental health is outlined, detailing how the dimensions of weaving and layered participation, nurturing mattering and facilitating attitudes interlace. This contribution raises awareness of tacit dimensions in the practice of facilitation, articulating the nuances of how to encourage and sustain meaningful and ethical engagement and offering insights into a range of tools. It highlights the importance of remaining reflexive in relation to attitudes and emotions and discusses practical methodological and ethical challenges and ways to resolve them which can be of benefit to researchers embarking on a similar journey.
The thesis also offers detailed insights on how methodologies from different fields were integrated into a whole, arguing for transparency and reflexivity about epistemological assumptions, and how underlying paradigms shift in an interdisciplinary context.
Based on the overall findings, the thesis makes a case for considering design as healing (or a designerly way of healing), highlighting implications at a systems, social and individual level. It makes an original contribution to our understanding of design, highlighting its healing character, and proposes a new way to support mental health. The participants in this study not only had increased their own wellbeing through co-designing, but were also empowered and contributed towards healing the world. Hence, the thesis argues for a unique, holistic perspective of design and mental health, recognizing the interconnectedness of the individual, social and systemic dimensions of the healing processes that are ignited

Meaning-Making Practices of Emergent ArabicâEnglish Bilingual Kindergarten Children in Cairo
The number of British Schools in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is growing. The National Curriculum of England is used by an increasing number of such schools. As well as exporting a culturally-specific curriculum, these schools usually adopt an ideology of monolingualism, thus potentially limiting communication for emergent bilinguals and failing to acknowledge the multiple ways of meaning-making.
Current studies of translanguaging are moving the focus to multimodal forms of communication as a resource for thinking and communicating (GarcĂa and Wei 2014, Wei 2018). Building on the work of Kress (1997, 2010) I explore pre-school emergent bilingualsâ wider signifying practices and create an analytical framework, which I call MMTL (multimodal translanguaging), used as a lens to illustrate meaning-making.
Valley Hill in Cairo, Egypt is a British school which encourages âEnglish-onlyâ as the medium of instruction in the kindergarten. Using a case study methodology, this research explores the meaning-making practices of eight emergent bilingual children aged 3â4 during child-initiated play, later reduced to four in the thesis to provide a detailed multimodal analysis. The principal aim is to explore their speech, gaze, gesture, and their engagement (layout/position) with artefacts during play.
The findings of this study suggest that although there is an âEnglish-onlyâ approach, these young emergent bilingual children are meaning-making in a variety of ways. Children are translanguaging but it is never in isolation from other modes of communication. Emergent bilinguals use a range of modes to mediate their understanding and communication with others. They use gesture, gaze, and artefacts alongside translingual practices to move meaning across to more accessible modes, enabling communication and understanding. The implications for schools should be to embrace such hybrid practices and for teachers to be more responsive to young childrenâs meaning-making to enable learning
Freelance subtitlers in a subtitle production network in the OTT industry in Thailand: a longitudinal study
The present study sets out to investigate a subtitle production network in the over-the-top (OTT) industry in Thailand through the perspective of freelance subtitlers. A qualitative longitudinal research design was adopted to gain insights into (1) the way the work practices of freelance subtitlers are influenced by both human and non-human actors in the network, (2) the evolution of the network, and (3) how the freelance subtitlersâ perception of quality is influenced by changes occurring in the network. Eleven subtitlers were interviewed every six months over a period of two years, contributing to over 60 hours of interview data. The data analysis was informed by selected concepts from Actor-Network Theory (ANT) (Law 1992, 2009; Latour 1996, 2005; Mol 2010), and complemented by the three-dimensional quality model proposed by Abdallah (2016, 2017). Reflexive thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke 2019a, 2020b) was used to generate themes and sub-themes which address the research questions and tell compelling stories about the actor-network. It was found that from July 2017 to September 2019, the subtitle production network, which was sustained by complex interrelationships between actors, underwent a number of changes. The changes affected the work practices of freelance subtitlers in a more negative than positive way, demonstrating their precarious position in an industry that has widely adopted the vendor model (Moorkens 2017). Moreover, as perceived by the research participants, under increasingly undesirable working conditions, it became more challenging to maintain a quality process and to produce quality subtitles. Finally, translation technology and tools, including machine translation, were found to be key non-human actors that catalyse the changes in the network under study

Brain signal recognition using deep learning
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityBrain Computer Interface (BCI) has the potential to offer a new generation of applications independent of
muscular activity and controlled by the human brain. Brain imaging technologies are used to transfer the
cognitive tasks into control commands for a BCI system. The electroencephalography (EEG) technology
serves as the best available non-invasive solution for extracting signals from the brain. On the other hand,
speech is the primary means of communication, but for patients suffering from locked-in syndrome, there
is no easy way to communicate. Therefore, an ideal communication system for locked-in patients is a
thought-to-speech BCI system.
This research aims to investigate methods for the recognition of imagined speech from EEG signals
using deep learning techniques. In order to design an optimal imagined speech recognition BCI, variety
of issues have been solved. These include 1) proposing new feature extraction and classification
framework for recognition of imagined speech from EEG signals, 2) grammatical class recognition of
imagined words from EEG signals, 3) discriminating different cognitive tasks associated with speech in
the brain such as overt speech, covert speech, and visual imagery. In this work machine learning, deep
learning methods were used to analyze EEG signals.
For recognition of imagined speech from EEG signals, a new EEG database was collected while the
participants mentally spoke (imagined speech) the presented words. Along with imagined speech, EEG
data was recorded for visual imagery (imagining a scene or an image) and overt speech (verbal speech).
Spectro-temporal and spatio-temporal domain features were investigated for the classification of imagined
words from EEG signals. Further, a deep learning framework using the convolutional network
and attention mechanism was implemented for learning features in the spatial, temporal, and spectral
domains. The method achieved a recognition rate of 76.6% for three binary word pairs. These experiments
show that deep learning algorithms are ideal for imagined speech recognition from EEG signals
due to their ability to interpret features from non-linear and non-stationary signals. Grammatical classes
of imagined words from EEG signals were also recognized using a multi-channel convolution network
framework. This method was extended to a multi-level recognition system for multi-class classification
of imagined words which achieved an accuracy of 52.9% for 10 words, which is much better in
comparison to previous work.
In order to investigate the difference between imagined speech with verbal speech and visual imagery
from EEG signals, we used multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA). MVPA provided the time segments
when the neural oscillation for the different cognitive tasks was linearly separable. Further, frequencies
that result in most discrimination between the different cognitive tasks were also explored. A framework
was proposed to discriminate two cognitive tasks based on the spatio-temporal patterns in EEG signals.
The proposed method used the K-means clustering algorithm to find the best electrode combination and
convolutional-attention network for feature extraction and classification. The proposed method achieved
a high recognition rate of 82.9% and 77.7%.
The results in this research suggest that a communication based BCI system can be designed using
deep learning methods. Further, this work add knowledge to the existing work in the field of communication
based BCI system
Platform protocol place: a practice-based study of critical media art practice (2007-2020)
This practice-based research project focuses on critical media art practices in contemporary digital culture. The theoretical framework employed in this inquiry draws from the work of the Frankfurt School, in particular Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimerâs The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception. Using Adorno & Horkheimerâs thesis as a theoretical guide, this research project formulates the concept of the digital culture industry - a concept that refers to the contemporary era of networked capitalism, an era defined by the unprecedented extraction, accumulation and manipulation of data and the material and digital infrastructures that facilitate it. This concept is used as a framing mechanism that articulates certain techno-political concerns within networked capitalism and responds to them through practice.
The second concept formulated within this research project is Platform Protocol Place. The function of this second concept is to frame and outline the body of practice-based work developed in this study. It is also used to make complex technological issues accessible and to communicate these issues through public exhibition and within this written thesis.
The final concept developed in this research project is tactical media archaeology. This concept describes the techniques and approaches employed in the development of the body of practice-based work that are the central focus of this research project. This approach is a synthesis of two subfields of media art practice and theory, tactical media and media archaeology. Through practice, tactical media archaeology critiques the geopolitical machinations and systems beneath the networked devices and interfaces of the digital culture industry
