    When and How to Provide Feedback and Instructions to Athletes?—How Sport Psychology and Pedagogy Insights Can Improve Coaching Interventions to Enhance Self-Regulation in Training

    In specialist sports coaching, the type and manner of augmented information that the coach chooses to use in communicating and training with individual athletes can have a significant impact on skill development and performance. Informed by insights from psychology, pedagogy, and sport science, this position paper presents a practitioner-based approach in response to the overarching question: When, why, and how could coaches provide information to athletes during coaching interventions? In an ecological dynamics rationale, practice is seen as a search for functional performance solutions, and augmented feedback is outlined as instructional constraints to guide athletes’ self-regulation of action in practice. Using the exemplar of team sports, we present a Skill Training Communication Model for practical application in the context of the role of a specialist coach, using a constraints-led approach (CLA). Further based on principles of a non-linear pedagogy and using the recently introduced Periodization of Skill Training (PoST) framework, the proposed model aims to support practitioners’ understanding of the pedagogical constraints of feedback and instruction during practice. In detail, the PoST framework’s three skill development and training stages work to (1) directly impact constraint manipulations in practice designs and (2) indirectly affect coaches’ choices of external (coach-induced) information. In turn, these guide practitioners on how and when to apply different verbal instruction methodologies and aim to support the design of effective skill learning environments. Finally, several practical guidelines in regard to sports coaches’ feedback and instruction processes are proposed

    Expanding social mobile games beyond the device screen

    Emerging pervasive games use sensors, graphics and networking technologies to provide immersive game experiences integrated with the real world. Existing pervasive games commonly rely on a device screen for providing game-related information, while overlooking opportunities to include new types of contextual interactions like jumping, a punching gesture, or even voice to be used as game inputs. We present the design of Spellbound, a physical mobile team-based game, to help contribute to our understanding of how we can design pervasive games that aim to nurture a spirit of togetherness. We also briefly touch upon how togetherness and playfulness can transform physical movement into a desirable activity in the user evaluation section. Spellbound is an outdoor pervasive team-based physical game. It takes advantage of the above-mentioned opportunities and integrates real-world actions like jumping and spinning with a virtual world. It also replaces touch-based input with voice interaction and provides glanceable and haptic feedback using custom hardware in the true spirit of social play characteristic of traditional children’s games. We believe Spellbound is a form of digital outdoor gaming that anchors enjoyment on physical action, social interaction, and tangible feedback. Spellbound was well received in user evaluation playtests which confirmed that the main design objective of enhancing a sense of togetherness was largely met

    No transfer of calibration between action and perception in learning a golf putting task

    We assessed calibration of perception and action in the context of a golf putting task. Previous research has shown that right-handed novice golfers make rightward errors both in the perception of the perfect aiming line from the ball to the hole and in the putting action. Right-handed experts, however, produce accurate putting actions but tend to make leftward errors in perception. In two experiments, we examined whether these skill-related differences in directional error reflect transfer of calibration from action to perception. In the main experiment, three groups of right-handed novice participants followed a pretest, practice, posttest, retention test design. During the tests, directional error for the putting action and the perception of the perfect aiming line were determined. During practice, participants were provided only with verbal outcome feedback about directional error; one group trained perception and the second trained action, whereas the third group did not practice. Practice led to a relatively permanent annihilation of directional error, but these improvements in accuracy were specific to the trained task. Hence, no transfer of calibration occurred between perception and action. The findings are discussed within the two-visual-system model for perception and action, and implications for perceptual learning in action are raised

    Exploring interactions with physically dynamic bar charts

    Visualizations such as bar charts help users reason about data, but are mostly screen-based, rarely physical, and almost never physical and dynamic. This paper investigates the role of physically dynamic bar charts and evaluates new interactions for exploring and working with datasets rendered in dynamic physical form. To facilitate our exploration we constructed a 10x10 interactive bar chart and designed interactions that supported fundamental visualisation tasks, specifically; annotation, filtering, organization, and navigation. The interactions were evaluated in a user study with 17 participants. Our findings identify the preferred methods of working with the data for each task i.e. directly tapping rows to hide bars, highlight the strengths and limitations of working with physical data, and discuss the challenges of integrating the proposed interactions together into a larger data exploration system. In general, physical interactions were intuitive, informative, and enjoyable, paving the way for new explorations in physical data visualizations

    In human spaceflight, advanced user interfaces are becoming an interesting mean to facilitate human-machine interaction, enhancing and guaranteeing the sequences of intravehicular space operations. The efforts made to ease such operations have shown strong interests in novel human-computer interaction like Augmented Reality (AR). The work presented in this thesis is directed towards a user-driven design for AR-assisted space operations, iteratively solving issues arisen from the problem space, which also includes the consideration of the effect of altered gravity on handling such interfaces.Auch in der bemannten Raumfahrt steigt das Interesse an neuartigen Benutzerschnittstellen, um nicht nur die Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion effektiver zu gestalten, sondern auch um einen korrekten Arbeitsablauf sicherzustellen.     Sensory Augmentation for Balance Rehabilitation Using Skin Stretch Feedback

    This dissertation focuses on the development and evaluation of portable sensory augmentation systems that render skin-stretch feedback of posture for standing balance training and for postural control improvement. Falling is one of the main causes of fatal injuries among all members of the population. The high incidence of fall-related injuries also leads to high medical expenses, which cost approximately $34 billion annually in the United States. People with neurological diseases, e.g., stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, and the elderly are more prone to falling when compared to healthy individuals. Falls among these populations can also lead to hip fracture, or even death. Thus, several balance and gait rehabilitation approaches have been developed to reduce the risk of falling. Traditionally, a balance-retraining program includes a series of exercises for trainees to strengthen their sensorimotor and musculoskeletal systems. Recent advances in technology have incorporated biofeedback such as visual, auditory, or haptic feedback to provide the users with extra cues about their postural sway. Studies have also demonstrated the positive effects of biofeedback on balance control. However, current applications of biofeedback for interventions in people with impaired balance are still lacking some important characteristics such as portability (in-home care), small-size, and long-term viability. Inspired by the concept of light touch, a light, small, and wearable sensory augmentation system that detects body sway and supplements skin stretch on one’s fingertip pad was first developed. The addition of a shear tactile display could significantly enhance the sensation to body movement. Preliminary results have shown that the application of passive skin stretch feedback at the fingertip enhanced standing balance of healthy young adults. Based on these findings, two research directions were initiated to investigate i) which dynamical information of postural sway could be more effectively conveyed by skin stretch feedback, and ii) how can such feedback device be easily used in the clinical setting or on a daily basis. The major sections of this research are focused on understanding how the skin stretch feedback affects the standing balance and on quantifying the ability of humans to interpret the cutaneous feedback as the cues of their physiological states. Experimental results from both static and dynamic balancing tasks revealed that healthy subjects were able to respond to the cues and subsequently correct their posture. However, it was observed that the postural sway did not generally improve in healthy subjects due to skin stretch feedback. A possible reason was that healthy subjects already had good enough quality sensory information such that the additional artificial biofeedback may have interfered with other sensory cues. Experiments incorporating simulated sensory deficits were further conducted and it was found that subjects with perturbed sensory systems (e.g., unstable surface) showed improved balance due to skin stretch feedback when compared to the neutral standing conditions. Positive impacts on balance performance have also been demonstrated among multiple sclerosis patients when they receive skin stretch feedback from a sensory augmentation walker. The findings in this research indicated that the skin stretch feedback rendered by the developed devices affected the human balance and can potentially compensate underlying neurological or musculoskeletal disorders, therefore enhancing quiet standing postural control

    Somatic ABC's: A Theoretical Framework for Designing, Developing and Evaluating the Building Blocks of Touch-Based Information Delivery

    abstract: Situations of sensory overload are steadily becoming more frequent as the ubiquity of technology approaches reality--particularly with the advent of socio-communicative smartphone applications, and pervasive, high speed wireless networks. Although the ease of accessing information has improved our communication effectiveness and efficiency, our visual and auditory modalities--those modalities that today's computerized devices and displays largely engage--have become overloaded, creating possibilities for distractions, delays and high cognitive load; which in turn can lead to a loss of situational awareness, increasing chances for life threatening situations such as texting while driving. Surprisingly, alternative modalities for information delivery have seen little exploration. Touch, in particular, is a promising candidate given that it is our largest sensory organ with impressive spatial and temporal acuity. Although some approaches have been proposed for touch-based information delivery, they are not without limitations including high learning curves, limited applicability and/or limited expression. This is largely due to the lack of a versatile, comprehensive design theory--specifically, a theory that addresses the design of touch-based building blocks for expandable, efficient, rich and robust touch languages that are easy to learn and use. Moreover, beyond design, there is a lack of implementation and evaluation theories for such languages. To overcome these limitations, a unified, theoretical framework, inspired by natural, spoken language, is proposed called Somatic ABC's for Articulating (designing), Building (developing) and Confirming (evaluating) touch-based languages. To evaluate the usefulness of Somatic ABC's, its design, implementation and evaluation theories were applied to create communication languages for two very unique application areas: audio described movies and motor learning. These applications were chosen as they presented opportunities for complementing communication by offloading information, typically conveyed visually and/or aurally, to the skin.
