    A character-recognition system for Hangeul

    This work presents a rule-based character-recognition system for the Korean script, Hangeul. An input raster image representing one Korean character (Hangeul syllable) is thinned down to a skeleton, and the individual lines extracted. The lines, along with information on how they are interconnected, are translated into a set of hierarchical graphs, which can be easily traversed and compared with a set of reference structures represented in the same way. Hangeul consists of consonant and vowel graphemes, which are combined into blocks representing syllables. Each reference structure describes one possible variant of such a grapheme. The reference structures that best match the structures found in the input are combined to form a full Hangeul syllable. Testing all of the 11 172 possible characters, each rendered as a 200-pixel-squared raster image using the gothic font AppleGothic Regular, had a recognition accuracy of 80.6 percent. No separation logic exists to be able to handle characters whose graphemes are overlapping or conjoined; with such characters removed from the set, thereby reducing the total number of characters to 9 352, an accuracy of 96.3 percent was reached. Hand-written characters were also recognised, to a certain degree. The work shows that it is possible to create a workable character-recognition system with reasonably simple means

    The picture of Dongmun Yuhae : lexicographic description and review of its functions as a dictionary

    This thesis addresses the problem of situating Dongmun Yuhae, a Chinese-Korean-Manchu dictionary published by Joseon’s Bureau of Interpreters in 1748, within the crisis of identity afflicting the Joseon Dynasty. To achieve this, it is proposed that an analysis concerning a dictionary focuses on its inherent nature as a lexicographic tool, through a lexicographic description and review of its functions. Understanding Dongmun Yuhae’s functions ensures that the dictionary is not analysed according to its individual parts in separation from each other, but rather according to its whole design to produce a more comprehensive representation. The analysis mainly compares the functions of Dongmun Yuhae that have been explicitly stated in the postface of Dongmun Yuhae (Manchu vocabulary consultation) and the presumed function described by other research (vernacular Chinese consultation). Based on the results of macrostructural, microstructural and mediostructural analysis, Dongmun Yuhae is proven to be designed to fully support the consultation of Manchu vocabulary for its target users, students and interpreters of the Bureau of Interpreters. Against the crisis of identity of Joseon, Dongmun Yuhae reveals the diplomatic function of Manchu and its importance in Joseon’s search for legitimacy as the last bastion of Confucian cultures and value. Historical sources support the description and review of Dongmun Yuhae’s main function and shows that despite the crisis of identity and need for Joseon’s court and intellectuals to prove to be the deserving heir of Ming’s legacy, Joseon court still needed to maintain diplomatic relationship with Qing Dynasty. DMYH was one of the many steps taken to augment its cultural identity. To sum up, the cultural and political crisis of identities and linguistic situations are reflected in DMYH’s design and functions

    PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA KOREA UNTUK UMUM BERBASIS ANDROID

    Bahasa Korea adalah bahasa yang digunakan oleh orang yang tinggal di semenanjung Korea yang merupakan bahasa resmi dari Korea, baik Korea selatan maupun Korea Utara. Dan bangsa Korea memiliki abjad tersendiri yang disebut Hangeul atau?? yang diciptakan oleh Raja Seojong pada masa pemerintahan Dinasti Joseon sekitar tahun 1443. Menurut lembaga bahasa di Seoul National University karena meningkatnya jumlah ketertarikan orang yang mulai mempelajari bahasa Korea, baik secara autodidak, dengan bantuan buku materi, aplikasi dan website ataupun dengan kursus bahasa Korea. Adapun kendala yang dihadapi para pelajar autodidak adalah kurangnya penjelasan dan ketersediaan materi yang terstruktur. Aplikasi pembelajaran merupakan cara atau alat bantu untuk pembelajar belajar bahasa Korea yang diharapkan dapat membantu dalam pembelajaran bahasa Korea. Metode yang digunakan ialah metode ADDIE (Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation) dan UAT (User Acceptance Testing). Aplikasi pembelajaran ini menggunakan bahasa pemrograman Java karena aplikasi ini berbasis Android. Dengan bantuan aplikasi ini pengguna dapat membaca materi, mendengarkan pelafalan, dan menjawab quiz yang berbentuk sebuah game yang dibuat untuk mengevaluasi hasil pembelajaran.     UNIVERSAL DESIGN APPLICATION THROUGH SOUTH KOREA REDEVELOPMENT (A Study Review)

    The evolution toward Universal Design was began in the 1950s with a new attention to design for people with disabilities. At the same era South Korea began their development after several wars. Recently some of researchs and projects in South Korea which conducted on Universal Design concept are increasing in quantity and widening in multidiciplinary areas to make a better living for people in South Korea. This study examined those researches and projects to determine the progress of Universal Design principles application in South Korea in several periods and evaluated the result by the project’s purpose. This study is a review from several literatures related to universal design application in South Korea. The Review revealed that South Korea has published regulations, guidelines and law based on universal design principles. South Korea has established universal design principles as fundamental basis in designing and developing their public space, public facilities building and elderly residential houses. Application of universal design influenced the knowledge of diversity for people especialy in disability and elderly. Universal design encourage people with diversity in ability, ages, gender to live together without barrier to access and use every facilities in their regions.     APLIKASI PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA KOREA BERBASIS ANDROID MENGGUNAKAN SPEECH RECOGNITION

    Bahasa Korea merupakan bahasa yang umumnya digunakan oleh penduduk Korea untuk berkomunikasi. Mempelajari bahasa Korea dapat dilakukan dengan mengikuti kursus, tetapi terdapat kekurangan diantaranya batasan pertemuan dan pertemuan harus dilakukan secara tatap muka. Alternatif lain untuk mempelajari bahasa Korea adalah dengan menggunakan mobile learning, namun berdasarkan perbandingan yang telah dilakukan terhadap 3 aplikasi pembelajaran bahasa Korea yang popular di playstore, belum terdapat aplikasi pembelajaran bahasa Korea yang memiliki fitur speech recognition untuk pengucapan kalimat Korea. Pada penelitian ini dirancang suatu aplikasi pembelajaran bahasa Korea berbasis android menggunakan speech recognition. Aplikasi ini menggunakan library Google cloud speech-to-text untuk fitur speech recognition. Aplikasi ini juga dilengkapi dengan web admin sehingga admin dapat mengelola data secara berkala. Berdasarkan hasil pengujian akurasi dan keberhasilan deteksi suara pengguna, jarak ideal aplikasi android dalam menerima inputan suara pengguna laki-laki dan suara pengguna perempuan adalah pada lingkungan tanpa noise pada jarak 50 cm dengan rata-rata keberhasilan deteksi sebesar 100%. Berdasarkan pengujian usabilitas yang telah dilakukan, diperoleh nilai rata-rata skor akhir sebesar 86,3 % dimana nilai tersebut berada dalam range kategori Sangat Setuju, hal ini menunjukkan bahwa aplikasi pembelajaran yang dibangun dapat menjadi media alternatif untuk mempelajari Bahasa Korea
