    dissertationThe computing landscape is undergoing a major change, primarily enabled by ubiquitous wireless networks and the rapid increase in the use of mobile devices which access a web-based information infrastructure. It is expected that most intensive computing may either happen in servers housed in large datacenters (warehouse- scale computers), e.g., cloud computing and other web services, or in many-core high-performance computing (HPC) platforms in scientific labs. It is clear that the primary challenge to scaling such computing systems into the exascale realm is the efficient supply of large amounts of data to hundreds or thousands of compute cores, i.e., building an efficient memory system. Main memory systems are at an inflection point, due to the convergence of several major application and technology trends. Examples include the increasing importance of energy consumption, reduced access stream locality, increasing failure rates, limited pin counts, increasing heterogeneity and complexity, and the diminished importance of cost-per-bit. In light of these trends, the memory system requires a major overhaul. The key to architecting the next generation of memory systems is a combination of the prudent incorporation of novel technologies, and a fundamental rethinking of certain conventional design decisions. In this dissertation, we study every major element of the memory system - the memory chip, the processor-memory channel, the memory access mechanism, and memory reliability, and identify the key bottlenecks to efficiency. Based on this, we propose a novel main memory system with the following innovative features: (i) overfetch-aware re-organized chips, (ii) low-cost silicon photonic memory channels, (iii) largely autonomous memory modules with a packet-based interface to the proces- sor, and (iv) a RAID-based reliability mechanism. Such a system is energy-efficient, high-performance, low-complexity, reliable, and cost-effective, making it ideally suited to meet the requirements of future large-scale computing systems

    dissertationThe demand for main memory capacity has been increasing for many years and will continue to do so. In the past, Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) process scaling has enabled this increase in memory capacity. Along with continued DRAM scaling, the emergence of new technologies like 3D-stacking, buffered Dual Inline Memory Modules (DIMMs), and crosspoint nonvolatile memory promise to continue this trend in the years ahead. However, these technologies will bring with them their own gamut of problems. In this dissertation, I look at the problems facing these technologies from a current delivery perspective. 3D-stacking increases memory capacity available per package, but the increased current requirement means that more pins on the package have to be now dedicated to provide Vdd/Vss, hence increasing cost. At the system level, using buffered DIMMs to increase the number of DRAM ranks increases the peak current requirements of the system if all the DRAM chips in the system are Refreshed simultaneously. Crosspoint memories promise to greatly increase bit densities but have long read latencies because of sneak currents in the cross-bar. In this dissertation, I provide architectural solutions to each of these problems. We observe that smart data placement by the architecture and the Operating System (OS) is a vital ingredient in all of these solutions. We thereby mitigate major bottlenecks in these technologies, hence enabling higher memory densities

    Power Consumption Analysis, Measurement, Management, and Issues:A State-of-the-Art Review of Smartphone Battery and Energy Usage

    The advancement and popularity of smartphones have made it an essential and all-purpose device. But lack of advancement in battery technology has held back its optimum potential. Therefore, considering its scarcity, optimal use and efficient management of energy are crucial in a smartphone. For that, a fair understanding of a smartphone's energy consumption factors is necessary for both users and device manufacturers, along with other stakeholders in the smartphone ecosystem. It is important to assess how much of the device's energy is consumed by which components and under what circumstances. This paper provides a generalized, but detailed analysis of the power consumption causes (internal and external) of a smartphone and also offers suggestive measures to minimize the consumption for each factor. The main contribution of this paper is four comprehensive literature reviews on: 1) smartphone's power consumption assessment and estimation (including power consumption analysis and modelling); 2) power consumption management for smartphones (including energy-saving methods and techniques); 3) state-of-the-art of the research and commercial developments of smartphone batteries (including alternative power sources); and 4) mitigating the hazardous issues of smartphones' batteries (with a details explanation of the issues). The research works are further subcategorized based on different research and solution approaches. A good number of recent empirical research works are considered for this comprehensive review, and each of them is succinctly analysed and discussed

    Reducing Power Consumption and Latency in Mobile Devices using a Push Event Stream Model, Kernel Display Server, and GUI Scheduler

    The power consumed by mobile devices can be dramatically reduced by improving how mobile operating systems handle events and display management. Currently, mobile operating systems use a pull model that employs a polling loop to constantly ask the operating system if an event exists. This constant querying prevents the CPU from entering a deep sleep, which unnecessarily consumes power. We’ve improved this process by switching to a push model which we refer to as the event stream model (ESM). This model leverages modern device interrupt controllers which automatically notify an application when events occur, thus removing the need to constantly rouse the CPU in order to poll for events. Since the CPU rests while no events are occurring, power consumption is reduced. Furthermore, an application is immediately notified when an event occurs, as opposed to waiting for a polling loop to recognize when an event has occurred. This immediate notification reduces latency, which is the elapsed time between the occurrence of an event and the beginning of its processing by an application. We further improved the benefits of the ESM by moving the display server, a central piece of the graphical user interface (GUI), into the kernel. Existing display servers duplicate some of the kernel code. They contain important information about an application that can assist the kernel with scheduling, such as whether the application is visible and able to receive events. However, they do not share such information with the kernel. Our new kernel-level display server (KDS) interacts directly with the process scheduler to determine when applications are allowed to use the CPU. For example, when an application is idle and not visible on the screen, the KDS prevents that application from using the CPU, thus conserving power. These combined improvements have reduced power consumption by up to 31.2% and latency by up to 17.1 milliseconds in our experimental applications. This improvement in power consumption roughly increases battery life by one to four hours when the device is being actively used or fifty to three-hundred hours when the device is idle

    Energy Efficiency Analysis And Optimization For Mobile Platforms

    The introduction of mobile devices changed the landscape of computing. Gradually, these devices are replacing traditional personal computer (PCs) to become the devices of choice for entertainment, connectivity, and productivity. There are currently at least 45.5 million people in the United States who own a mobile device, and that number is expected to increase to 1.5 billion by 2015. Users of mobile devices expect and mandate that their mobile devices have maximized performance while consuming minimal possible power. However, due to the battery size constraints, the amount of energy stored in these devices is limited and is only growing by 5% annually. As a result, we focused in this dissertation on energy efficiency analysis and optimization for mobile platforms. We specifically developed SoftPowerMon, a tool that can power profile Android platforms in order to expose the power consumption behavior of the CPU. We also performed an extensive set of case studies in order to determine energy inefficiencies of mobile applications. Through our case studies, we were able to propose optimization techniques in order to increase the energy efficiency of mobile devices and proposed guidelines for energy-efficient application development. In addition, we developed BatteryExtender, an adaptive user-guided tool for power management of mobile devices. The tool enables users to extend battery life on demand for a specific duration until a particular task is completed. Moreover, we examined the power consumption of System-on-Chips (SoCs) and observed the impact on the energy efficiency in the event of offloading tasks from the CPU to the specialized custom engines. Based on our case studies, we were able to demonstrate that current software-based power profiling techniques for SoCs can have an error rate close to 12%, which needs to be addressed in order to be able to optimize the energy consumption of the SoC. Finally, we summarize our contributions and outline possible direction for future research in this field

    A variable point kernel dosimetry method for virtual reality simulation applications in nuclear safeguards and security

It dynamically adapts the method to cope with both accuracy and time requirements. Given the real-time constraints imposed by VR applications, more accurate, but computationally intensive stochastic algorithms (e.g., Monte Carlo) are not suited to this task. On the opposite end, a Point Kernel (PK) method can be effective in some cases with as little as one point (mono PK) to define a source, in contrast with the millions of points that Monte Carlo computes. Simple mono PK codes may lack the desired accuracy in some circumstances, requiring a more detailed source representation. In this work, a novel method is presented which automatically estimates the appropriate level of detail for a source's volumetric representation, then generates a non-regular mesh model and subsequently computes the dose rate via a PK method, performing this three-step process in real time.This work was supported by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre Ph.D. grant program.Moltó Caracena, T.; Gonçalves, JGM.; Peerani, P.; Vendrell Vidal, E.     Exploring Processor and Memory Architectures for Multimedia

    Multimedia has become one of the cornerstones of our 21st century society and, when combined with mobility, has enabled a tremendous evolution of our society. However, joining these two concepts introduces many technical challenges. These range from having sufficient performance for handling multimedia content to having the battery stamina for acceptable mobile usage. When taking a projection of where we are heading, we see these issues becoming ever more challenging by increased mobility as well as advancements in multimedia content, such as introduction of stereoscopic 3D and augmented reality. The increased performance needs for handling multimedia come not only from an ongoing step-up in resolution going from QVGA (320x240) to Full HD (1920x1080) a 27x increase in less than half a decade. On top of this, there is also codec evolution (MPEG-2 to H.264 AVC) that adds to the computational load increase. To meet these performance challenges there has been processing and memory architecture advances (SIMD, out-of-order superscalarity, multicore processing and heterogeneous multilevel memories) in the mobile domain, in conjunction with ever increasing operating frequencies (200MHz to 2GHz) and on-chip memory sizes (128KB to 2-3MB). At the same time there is an increase in requirements for mobility, placing higher demands on battery-powered systems despite the steady increase in battery capacity (500 to 2000mAh). This leaves negative net result in-terms of battery capacity versus performance advances. In order to make optimal use of these architectural advances and to meet the power limitations in mobile systems, there is a need for taking an overall approach on how to best utilize these systems. The right trade-off between performance and power is crucial. On top of these constraints, the flexibility aspects of the system need to be addressed. All this makes it very important to reach the right architectural balance in the system. The first goal for this thesis is to examine multimedia applications and propose a flexible solution that can meet the architectural requirements in a mobile system. Secondly, propose an automated methodology of optimally mapping multimedia data and instructions to a heterogeneous multilevel memory subsystem. The proposed methodology uses constraint programming for solving a multidimensional optimization problem. Results from this work indicate that using today’s most advanced mobile processor technology together with a multi-level heterogeneous on-chip memory subsystem can meet the performance requirements for handling multimedia. By utilizing the automated optimal memory mapping method presented in this thesis lower total power consumption can be achieved, whilst performance for multimedia applications is improved, by employing enhanced memory management. This is achieved through reduced external accesses and better reuse of memory objects. This automatic method shows high accuracy, up to 90%, for predicting multimedia memory accesses for a given architecture
