    Optimal greenhouse cultivation control: survey and perspectives

    Abstract: A survey is presented of the literature on greenhouse climate control, positioning the various solutions and paradigms in the framework of optimal control. A separation of timescales allows the separation of the economic optimal control problem of greenhouse cultivation into an off-line problem at the tactical level, and an on-line problem at the operational level. This paradigm is used to classify the literature into three categories: focus on operational control, focus on the tactical level, and truly integrated control. Integrated optimal control warrants the best economical result, and provides a systematic way to design control systems for the innovative greenhouses of the future. Research issues and perspectives are listed as well

    Research Trends on Greenhouse Engineering Using a Science Mapping Approach

    Horticultural protected cultivation has spread throughout the world as it has proven to be extremely effective. In recent years, the greenhouse engineering research field has become one of the main research topics within greenhouse farming. The main objectives of the current study were to identify the major research topics and their trends during the last four decades by analyzing the co-occurrence network of keywords associated with greenhouse engineering publications. A total of 3804 pertinent documents published, in 1981-2021, were analyzed and discussed. China, the United States, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands have been the most active countries with more than 36% of the relevant literature. The keyword cluster analysis suggested the presence of five principal research topics: energy management and storage; monitoring and control of greenhouse climate parameters; automation of greenhouse operations through the internet of things (IoT) and wireless sensor network (WSN) applications; greenhouse covering materials and microclimate optimization in relation to plant growth; structural and functional design for improving greenhouse stability, ventilation and microclimate. Recent research trends are focused on real-time monitoring and automatic control systems based on the IoT and WSN technologies, multi-objective optimization approaches for greenhouse climate control, efficient artificial lighting and sustainable greenhouse crop cultivation using renewable energy

    Software for finite element methods and its application to nonvariational problems

    We begin by introducing an extension to the software package Dune (a C++ based toolbox for solving PDEs with the finite element method) which has the main objective of providing a Python user interface to it. First of all we explain how we have structured the interface and go into some detail about the components typical to a FEM. We then go on to demonstrate different features available in the context of worked examples. For instance, we consider the integration of different software packages such as PETSc and SciPy, as well as FEM features such as grid adaptivity, moving domains, and partitioned grids. Throughout this we highlight design decisions that are different to other similar packages and the reasoning behind them. We conclude by demonstrating how C++ code development can be integrated into the process and how that affects efficiency. We go on to consider an application of this software to nonvariational PDEs. The key contribution of this section is the development of a new method for solving this class of problems based on minimization. We derive this method and provide results for existence and uniqueness and error convergence. We also compare this method to existing methods and highlight the advantages it has. We then derive a second aspect of this method which involves a finite element version of the Hessian. We combine these features and look at numerical results for linear nonvariational problems. We compare the new methods along with other existing methods using our software in terms of convergence rates and efficiency. Finally we take an experimental look at solving nonlinear nonvariational problems using the finite element Hessian, and an application to the Monge-Ampere equation
