    Development of User Interface for the Management Server of Html5 Based Mobile Agent Framework

    The emergence of World Wide Web as a widely used content-sharing environment and a rich software platform has revolutionized the life style of people across the globe. The Web is an archetypal commodity used by millions of people on daily basis, for a variety of online services that range from photos, music, videos, and online games to online shopping, online banking, e-marketing, e-communication, online business, etc. A web browser is the most frequently used application to access the above-mentioned services. The appearance of HTML5 has enabled more and more applications to run in the web browsers. Latest research in the field of Web and computer networks has given a rapid upsurge in the usage of web-based services for data storage and information exchange. This has resulted in challenges to develop efficient web-based systems, which can handle huge amount of information flow. One of the solutions to these challenges is mobile agents. A mobile agent is a software program that is able to migrate from one host to another to continue its execution. This thesis presents the development of a User Interface for the management server of an HTML5-based mobile agent platform. This platform was developed in 2012 at Tampere University of Technology and its second iteration was completed in 2013 at the same campus. The management server of the framework was without a user interface and could to be managed only from the command line. In this thesis, a web-browser based User Interface for the management server of the framework is developed. The management server exposes a Web API to manage the mobile agents and the agent servers through an HTTP interface. So, the API is leveraged by using JavaScript to make Ajax calls

    Some Potential Issues with the Security of HTML5 IndexedDB

    The new HTML5 standard provides much more access to client resources, such as user location and local data storage. Unfortunately, this greater access may create new security risks that potentially can yield new threats to user privacy and web attacks. One of these security risks lies with the HTML5 client-side database. It appears that data stored on the client file system is unencrypted. Therefore, any stored data might be at risk of exposure. This paper explains and performs a security investigation into how the data is stored on client local file systems. The investigation was undertaken using Firefox and Chrome web browsers, and Encase (a computer forensic tool), was used to examine the stored data. This paper describes how the data can be retrieved after an application deletes the client side database. Finally, based on our findings, we propose a solution to correct any potential issues and security risks, and recommend ways to store data securely on local file systems

    Online advertising: analysis of privacy threats and protection approaches

    Online advertising, the pillar of the “free” content on the Web, has revolutionized the marketing business in recent years by creating a myriad of new opportunities for advertisers to reach potential customers. The current advertising model builds upon an intricate infrastructure composed of a variety of intermediary entities and technologies whose main aim is to deliver personalized ads. For this purpose, a wealth of user data is collected, aggregated, processed and traded behind the scenes at an unprecedented rate. Despite the enormous value of online advertising, however, the intrusiveness and ubiquity of these practices prompt serious privacy concerns. This article surveys the online advertising infrastructure and its supporting technologies, and presents a thorough overview of the underlying privacy risks and the solutions that may mitigate them. We first analyze the threats and potential privacy attackers in this scenario of online advertising. In particular, we examine the main components of the advertising infrastructure in terms of tracking capabilities, data collection, aggregation level and privacy risk, and overview the tracking and data-sharing technologies employed by these components. Then, we conduct a comprehensive survey of the most relevant privacy mechanisms, and classify and compare them on the basis of their privacy guarantees and impact on the Web.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Privacy Issues of the W3C Geolocation API

    The W3C's Geolocation API may rapidly standardize the transmission of location information on the Web, but, in dealing with such sensitive information, it also raises serious privacy concerns. We analyze the manner and extent to which the current W3C Geolocation API provides mechanisms to support privacy. We propose a privacy framework for the consideration of location information and use it to evaluate the W3C Geolocation API, both the specification and its use in the wild, and recommend some modifications to the API as a result of our analysis

    Web Content Extraction - a Meta-Analysis of its Past and Thoughts on its Future

    In this paper, we present a meta-analysis of several Web content extraction algorithms, and make recommendations for the future of content extraction on the Web. First, we find that nearly all Web content extractors do not consider a very large, and growing, portion of modern Web pages. Second, it is well understood that wrapper induction extractors tend to break as the Web changes; heuristic/feature engineering extractors were thought to be immune to a Web site's evolution, but we find that this is not the case: heuristic content extractor performance also tends to degrade over time due to the evolution of Web site forms and practices.     Understanding the role of Digital Commons in the Web; The making of HTML5

    The last version of Web́s hypertext standard has been developed from 2004 to 2014. During this era, HTML5 has experienced different crossroads due to the variety of motivations and needs that the main stakeholders interested in its development had. On October 2014, the standard got official by the W3C and closed a period of uncertainty around the future of the Web but at the same time, this agreement also introduced a major change in the own conception of the hypertext́s standard. In this paper we review the current status of digital commons on the Web and the development of HTML5. We also confront this analysis with several semi-structured interviews carried out with different experts in web development that represent at the same time different players of Web́s value chain. We argue that the development of HTML5 represents a new digital commons that prevented the proliferation of proprietary software that took place during the “Web 2.0” period. We claim that the World Wide Web promotes the development of new digital commons due to its own basis as a non-proprietary socio-technological platform. We also conclude that the development of standards and non-proprietary digital technologies is of outmost importance for the future of web business models that are fuelled by major digital players

    Investigating the use of semantic technologies in spatial mapping applications

    Semantic Web Technologies are ideally suited to build context-aware information retrieval applications. However, the geospatial aspect of context awareness presents unique challenges such as the semantic modelling of geographical references for efficient handling of spatial queries, the reconciliation of the heterogeneity at the semantic and geo-representation levels, maintaining the quality of service and scalability of communicating, and the efficient rendering of the spatial queries' results. In this paper, we describe the modelling decisions taken to solve these challenges by analysing our implementation of an intelligent planning and recommendation tool that provides location-aware advice for a specific application domain. This paper contributes to the methodology of integrating heterogeneous geo-referenced data into semantic knowledgebases, and also proposes mechanisms for efficient spatial interrogation of the semantic knowledgebase and optimising the rendering of the dynamically retrieved context-relevant information on a web frontend
