    A review of computer vision-based approaches for physical rehabilitation and assessment

    The computer vision community has extensively researched the area of human motion analysis, which primarily focuses on pose estimation, activity recognition, pose or gesture recognition and so on. However for many applications, like monitoring of functional rehabilitation of patients with musculo skeletal or physical impairments, the requirement is to comparatively evaluate human motion. In this survey, we capture important literature on vision-based monitoring and physical rehabilitation that focuses on comparative evaluation of human motion during the past two decades and discuss the state of current research in this area. Unlike other reviews in this area, which are written from a clinical objective, this article presents research in this area from a computer vision application perspective. We propose our own taxonomy of computer vision-based rehabilitation and assessment research which are further divided into sub-categories to capture novelties of each research. The review discusses the challenges of this domain due to the wide ranging human motion abnormalities and difficulty in automatically assessing those abnormalities. Finally, suggestions on the future direction of research are offered

    A Survey of Applications and Human Motion Recognition with Microsoft Kinect

    Microsoft Kinect, a low-cost motion sensing device, enables users to interact with computers or game consoles naturally through gestures and spoken commands without any other peripheral equipment. As such, it has commanded intense interests in research and development on the Kinect technology. In this paper, we present, a comprehensive survey on Kinect applications, and the latest research and development on motion recognition using data captured by the Kinect sensor. On the applications front, we review the applications of the Kinect technology in a variety of areas, including healthcare, education and performing arts, robotics, sign language recognition, retail services, workplace safety training, as well as 3D reconstructions. On the technology front, we provide an overview of the main features of both versions of the Kinect sensor together with the depth sensing technologies used, and review literatures on human motion recognition techniques used in Kinect applications. We provide a classification of motion recognition techniques to highlight the different approaches used in human motion recognition. Furthermore, we compile a list of publicly available Kinect datasets. These datasets are valuable resources for researchers to investigate better methods for human motion recognition and lower-level computer vision tasks such as segmentation, object detection and human pose estimation

    An objective evaluation method for rehabilitation exergames

    The aim of this work is to objectively evaluate the performance of patients using a virtual rehabilitation system called MIRA. MIRA is a software platform which converts conventional therapeutic exercises into games, enabling the user to practice the given exercise by playing a game. The system includes a motion sensor to track and capture user's movements. Our assessment of the performance quality is based on the recorded trajectories of the human skeleton joints. We employ two different machine learning approaches, dynamic time warping (DTW) and hidden Markov modeling (HMM), both widely used for gesture recognition, to compare the user's performance with that of a reference as ground truth

    ABSTRACT: This works explore the use of depth sensor data to determine whether a human being is executing a movement according to an specification. The sensor chosen to collect data was a kinect V1. Several different techniques are explored: Finite State Machines, Multi-Dimensional Dynamic Time Warping, discrete Hidden Markov Models and Continuous Hidden Markov Models. A set of activities chosen according to an expert’s criteria is used to test the applicability of the different approaches to the task at hand. Results are presented for each technique

    On the use of natural user interfaces in physical rehabilitation: a web-based application for patients with hip prosthesis

    This study aims to develop a telemedicine platform for self-motor rehabilitation and remote monitoring by health professionals, in order to enhance recovery in patients after hip replacement. The implementation of such a technology is justified by medical (improvement of the recovery process by the possibility to perform rehabilitation exercises more frequently), economic (reduction of the number of medical appointments and the time patients spend at the hospital), mobility (diminution of the transportation to and from the hospital) and ethics (healthcare democratization and increased empowerment of the patient) purposes. The Kinect camera is used as a Natural User Interface to capture the physical exercises performed at home by the patients. The quality of the movement is evaluated in real-time by an assessment module implemented according to a Hidden-Markov Model approach. The results show a high accuracy in the evaluation of the movements (92% of correct classification). Finally, the usability of the platform is tested through the System Usability Scale (SUS). The overall SUS score is 81 out of 100, which suggests a good usability of the Web application. Further work will focus on the development of additional functionalities and an evaluation of the impact of the platform on the recovery process
