    Recent advances on filtering and control for nonlinear stochastic complex systems with incomplete information: A survey

The incomplete information under consideration mainly includes missing measurements, randomly varying sensor delays, signal quantization, sensor saturations, and signal sampling. With such incomplete information, the developments on various filtering and control issues are reviewed in great detail. In particular, the addressed nonlinear stochastic complex systems are so comprehensive that they include conventional nonlinear stochastic systems, different kinds of complex networks, and a large class of sensor networks. The corresponding filtering and control technologies for such nonlinear stochastic complex systems are then discussed. Subsequently, some latest results on the filtering and control problems for the complex systems with incomplete information are given.     Distributed filtering of networked dynamic systems with non-gaussian noises over sensor networks: A survey

    summary:Sensor networks are regarded as a promising technology in the field of information perception and processing owing to the ease of deployment, cost-effectiveness, flexibility, as well as reliability. The information exchange among sensors inevitably suffers from various network-induced phenomena caused by the limited resource utilization and complex application scenarios, and thus is required to be governed by suitable resource-saving communication mechanisms. It is also noteworthy that noises in system dynamics and sensor measurements are ubiquitous and in general unknown but can be bounded, rather than follow specific Gaussian distributions as assumed in Kalman-type filtering. Particular attention of this paper is paid to a survey of recent advances in distributed filtering of networked dynamic systems with non-Gaussian noises over sensor networks. First, two types of widely employed structures of distributed filters are reviewed, the corresponding analysis is systematically addressed, and some interesting results are provided. The inherent purpose of adding consensus terms into the distributed filters is profoundly disclosed. Then, some representative models characterizing various network-induced phenomena are reviewed and their corresponding analytical strategies are exhibited in detail. Furthermore, recent results on distributed filtering with non-Gaussian noises are sorted out in accordance with different network-induced phenomena and system models. Another emphasis is laid on recent developments of distributed filtering with various communication scheduling, which are summarized based on the inherent characteristics of their dynamic behavior associated with mathematical models. Finally, the state-of-the-art of distributed filtering and challenging issues, ranging from scalability, security to applications, are raised to guide possible future research

    Dynamic State Estimation of Microgrid With Imperfect Data Communication

    Dynamic state estimation of power systems is essential for wide area control purposes. In this thesis, we present the results of dynamic state estimation for a grid-connected microgrid including two synchronous generators and three loads. The Unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and the Extended Kalman filter (EKF) are implemented using a classical generator model connected to a Thevenin equivalent of the remainder of the microgrid. The model is used to estimate the six states variables of the generator; namely, rotor angle, speed variant, d- and q- axis transient voltages, d-axis damper flux, and q-axis second damper flux. Both real power and reactive power are used as measurements in our state estimation algorithm. The estimation results are compared with the true values to demonstrate the accuracy of the state estimator. In addition to data loss or delay, sensor measurements may include outliers that distort state estimation. We utilized the Generalized Maximum Likelihood-extended Kalman filter (GM-EKF), as a robust estimator, which exhibits good tracking capabilities suppressing the effects of bad data (outliers). We also used two methods of state estimation on UKF to deal with bad data. Simulation results obtained from the UKFs are compared with those of GM-EKF. We present simulation results at a high frequency of 1 kHz of state estimation for different scenarios that include normal operation, fault at Point of Common Coupling (PCC), loss of generator, and loss of load. We also developed a scheme to use delayed data in Kalman filter estimation and used it to simulate the effect of data loss and/or delay in the communication system of the microgrid. For the same scenarios, we also present simulation results at 50 Hz, which is compatible with Phasor Measurement Units (PMU), including bad data as well as data loss or delay. Our results demonstrate that while both filters successfully detect bad data, the UKF methods provide better estimates than those of the GM-EKF

    Transmissibility operators for state and output estimation in nonlinear systems

    Transmissibility operators are mathematical objects that characterize the relationship between two subsets of responses of an underlying system. The importance of transmissiblity operators comes from the fact that these operators are independent on the system inputs. This work develops the transmissibility theory for nonlinear systems for the first time. The system nonlinearities are assumed to be unknown, which gives a wide range of possible engineering applications in different disciplines. Four different methods are developed to deal with these nonlinearities. The first method is by re-constructing the system nonlinearities as independent excitations on the system. This method handles the inherent unmodeled nonlinearities within the system. The second method is by designing a transmissibility-based sliding mode control. This method rejects unwanted nonlinearities such as system faults. The third method is by constructing the system as time-variant linear system, and use recursive least squares to solve it. This method can handle nonlinear systems with time-variant dynamics. The fourth method is by designing a new robust estimation technique called high-gain transmissibility (HGT) that is inspired by high-gain observers. This estimator has the ability to robustly estimate the system states in a high-gain form. The majority of modern fault detection, control systems, and robots localization depend on mathematically estimating the system states and outputs. Transmissibility-based estimation is incorporated in this work with these three theoretical applications. For fault detection, transmissibility operators are used along a set of outputs to estimate the measurements of another set of outputs. Then faults are detected by comparing the estimated and measured outputs with each other. Control approaches use the transmissibility-based estimation to construct the control signal, in which is injected back to the original system. Robots localization fuses the transmissibility-based estimation with real-time sensor measurements to minimize the error in determining the robot displacements. These three theoretical applications are applied on four different systems. The first system is Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) platoons. A CAV platoon is a network of connected autonomous vehicles that communicate together to move in a specific path with the desired velocity. Transmissibilities are proposed along with the measurements from sensors available in CAV platoons to identify transmissibility operators. This will be then developed to mixed autonomous and human-driven vehicle platoons. Besides the wide range of physical and cyber faults in such systems, this is also motivated by the fact that on-road human-drivers’ behaviour is unknown and difficult to be predicted. Transmissibility operators are used here to handle both cyber-physical faults as well as the human-drivers’ behaviour. The platoon faults are then proposed to be mitigated using a transmissibility-based sliding mode controller. Moreover, transmissibilities are integrated with Kalman filter to localize CAV platoons while operating under non-Gaussian environment as unknown nonlinearities. The second system is a multi-actuator micro positioning system that is used in the semi-conductors industry. Transmissibility operators are applied on this system for fault detection and fault-tolerant control. Fault detection is represented in applying the proposed developments to actuator fault detection. Some of the most common actuator faults such as actuator loss of effectiveness and fatigue crack in the connection hinges will be considered. Transmissibilities then will be used for fault detection without knowledge of the dynamics of the system or the excitation that acts on the system. Next, a transmissibility-based sliding mode control will be implemented to mitigate common actuator faults in multi-actuator systems. The third system is flexible structures subjected to unknown and random excitations. Structures used in applications subjected to turbulent fluid flow such as aerospace and underwater applications are subjected to random excitations distributed along the structure. Transmissibility operators are used for the purpose of structural fault detection and localization during the system operation. The fourth system is robotic manipulators with bounded nonlinearities and time-variant parameters. Both parameter variation and system nonlinearities are considered to be unknown. Transmissibility operators are integrated with Recursive Least Squares (RLS) to overcome the unknown variant parameters. RLS identifies transmissibilities used in the structure of noncausal FIR (Finite Impulse Response) models. While parameter variation can be treated as system nonlinearities, the RLS algorithm is used to optimize what time-variant dynamics to include in the transmissibility operator and what dynamics to push to the system nonlinearities over time. The identified transmissibilities are then used for the purpose of fault detection in an experimental robotic arm with variant picked mass

    Para poder satisfacer la demanda de mayores anchos de banda y los requisitos de los nuevos servicios, se espera que se produzca una evolución de las redes ópticas hacia arquitecturas reconfigurables dinámicamente. Esta evolución subraya la importancia de ofrecer soluciones en la que la escalabilidad y la flexibilidad sean las principales directrices. De acuerdo a estas características, las redes ópticas de conmutación de paquetes (OPS) proporcionan altas capacidades de transmisión, eficiencia en ancho de banda y excelente flexibilidad, además de permitir el procesado de los paquetes directamente en la capa óptica. En este escenario, la solución all-optical label switching (AOLS) resuelve el cuello de botella impuesto por los nodos que realizan el procesado en el dominio eléctrico. A pesar de los progresos en el campo del networking óptico, las redes totalmente ópticas todavía se consideran una solución lejana . Por tanto, es importante desarrollar un escenario de migración factible y gradual desde las actuales redes ópticas basadas en la conmutación de circuitos (OCS). Uno de los objetivos de esta tesis se centra en la propuesta de escenarios de migración basados en redes híbridas que combinan diferentes tecnologías de conmutación. Además, se analiza la arquitectura de una red OPS compuesta de nodos que incorporan nuevas funcionalidades relacionadas con labores de monitorización y esquemas de recuperación. Las redes ópticas permiten mejorar la transparencia de la red, pero a costa de aumentar la complejidad de las tareas de gesión. En este escenario, la monitorización óptica de prestaciones (OPM) surge como una tecnología capaz de facilitar la administración de las redes OPS, en las que cada paquete sigue su propia ruta en la red y sufre un diferente nivel de degradación al llegar a su destino.     Towards low-cost gigabit wireless systems at 60 GHz

    The world-wide availability of the huge amount of license-free spectral space in the 60 GHz band provides wide room for gigabit-per-second (Gb/s) wireless applications. A commercial (read: low-cost) 60-GHz transceiver will, however, provide limited system performance due to the stringent link budget and the substantial RF imperfections. The work presented in this thesis is intended to support the design of low-cost 60-GHz transceivers for Gb/s transmission over short distances (a few meters). Typical applications are the transfer of high-definition streaming video and high-speed download. The presented work comprises research into the characteristics of typical 60-GHz channels, the evaluation of the transmission quality as well as the development of suitable baseband algorithms. This can be summarized as follows. In the first part, the characteristics of the wave propagation at 60 GHz are charted out by means of channel measurements and ray-tracing simulations for both narrow-beam and omni-directional configurations. Both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) are considered. This study reveals that antennas that produce a narrow beam can be used to boost the received power by tens of dBs when compared with omnidirectional configurations. Meanwhile, the time-domain dispersion of the channel is reduced to the order of nanoseconds, which facilitates Gb/s data transmission over 60-GHz channels considerably. Besides the execution of measurements and simulations, the influence of antenna radiation patterns is analyzed theoretically. It is indicated to what extent the signal-to-noise ratio, Rician-K factor and channel dispersion are improved by application of narrow-beam antennas and to what extent these parameters will be influenced by beam pointing errors. From both experimental and analytical work it can be concluded that the problem of the stringent link-budget can be solved effectively by application of beam-steering techniques. The second part treats wideband transmission methods and relevant baseband algorithms. The considered schemes include orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) and single carrier with frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE), which are promising candidates for Gb/s wireless transmission. In particular, the optimal linear equalization in the frei quency domain and associated implementation issues such as synchronization and channel estimation are examined. Bit error rate (BER) expressions are derived to evaluate the transmission performance. Besides the linear equalization techniques, a low-complexity inter-symbol interference cancellation technique is proposed to achieve much better performance of code-spreading systems such as MC-CDMA and SC-FDE. Both theoretical analysis and simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme offers great advantages as regards both complexity and performance. This makes it particularly suitable for 60-GHz applications in multipath environments. The third part treats the influence of quantization and RF imperfections on the considered transmission methods in the context of 60-GHz radios. First, expressions for the BER are derived and the influence of nonlinear distortions caused by the digital-to-analog converters, analog-to-digital converters and power amplifiers on the BER performance is examined. Next, the BER performance under the influence of phase noise and IQ imbalance is evaluated for the case that digital compensation techniques are applied in the receiver as well as for the case that such techniques are not applied. Finally, a baseline design of a low-cost Gb/s 60-GHz transceiver is presented. It is shown that, by application of beam-steering in combination with SC-FDE without advanced channel coding, a data rate in the order of 2 Gb/s can be achieved over a distance of 10 meters in a typical NLOS indoor scenario

    Contributions to channel modelling and performance estimation of HAPS-based communication systems regarding IEEE Std 802.16TM

    New and future telecommunication networks are and will be broadband type. The existing terrestrial and space radio communication infrastructures might be supplemented by new wireless networks that make and will make use of aeronautics-technology. Our study/contribution is referring to radio communications based on radio stations aboard a stratospheric platform named, by ITU-R, HAPS (High Altitude Platform Station). These new networks have been proposed as an alternative technology within the ITU framework to provide various narrow/broadband communication services. With the possibility of having a payload for Telecommunications in an aircraft or a balloon (HAPS), it can be carried out radio communications to provide backbone connections on ground and to access to broadband points for ground terminals. The latest implies a complex radio network planning. Therefore, the radio coverage analysis at outdoors and indoors becomes an important issue on the design of new radio systems. In this doctoral thesis, the contribution is related to the HAPS application for terrestrial fixed broadband communications. HAPS was hypothesised as a quasi-static platform with height above ground at the so-called stratospheric layer. Latter contribution was fulfilled by approaching via simulations the outdoor-indoor coverage with a simple efficient computational model at downlink mode. This work was assessing the ITU-R recommendations at bands recognised for the HAPS-based networks. It was contemplated the possibility of operating around 2 GHz (1820 MHz, specifically) because this band is recognised as an alternative for HAPS networks that can provide IMT-2000 and IMT-Advanced services. The global broadband radio communication model was composed of three parts: transmitter, channel, and receiver. The transmitter and receiver parts were based on the specifications of the IEEE Std 802.16TM-2009 (with its respective digital transmission techniques for a robust-reliable link), and the channel was subjected to the analysis of radio modelling at the level of HAPS and terrestrial (outdoors plus indoors) parts. For the channel modelling was used the two-state characterisation (physical situations associated with the transmitted/received signals), the state-oriented channel modelling. One of the channel-state contemplated the environmental transmission situation defined by a direct path between transmitter and receiver, and the remaining one regarded the conditions of shadowing. These states were dependent on the elevation angle related to the ray-tracing analysis: within the propagation environment, it was considered that a representative portion of the total energy of the signal was received by a direct or diffracted wave, and the remaining power signal was coming by a specular wave, to last-mentioned waves (rays) were added the scattered and random rays that constituted the diffuse wave. At indoors case, the variations of the transmitted signal were also considering the following matters additionally: the building penetration, construction material, angle of incidence, floor height, position of terminal in the room, and indoor fading; also, these indoors radiocommunications presented different type of paths to reach the receiver: obscured LOS, no LOS (NLOS), and hard NLOS. The evaluation of the feasible performance for the HAPS-to-ground terminal was accomplished by means of thorough simulations. The outcomes of the experiment were presented in terms of BER vs. Eb/N0 plotting, getting significant positive conclusions for these kind of system as access network technology based on HAPS

    Real-time data flow models and congestion management for wire and wireless IP networks

Congestion control may take the form of rate adjustment through mechanisms by attempt to minimize the probability of congestion by adjusting the rate of the streaming video to match the available capacity of the network. This can be achieved either by adapting the quantization parameter of the video encoder or by varying the rate through a scalable video technique. This thesis proposes a congestion control protocol for streaming video where an interaction between the video source and the receiver is essential to monitor the network state. The protocol consists of adjusting the video transmission rate at the encoder whenever a change in the network conditions is observed and reported back to the sender

    Estimation and stability of nonlinear control systems under intermittent information with applications to multi-agent robotics

    This dissertation investigates the role of intermittent information in estimation and control problems and applies the obtained results to multi-agent tasks in robotics. First, we develop a stochastic hybrid model of mobile networks able to capture a large variety of heterogeneous multi-agent problems and phenomena. This model is applied to a case study where a heterogeneous mobile sensor network cooperatively detects and tracks mobile targets based on intermittent observations. When these observations form a satisfactory target trajectory, a mobile sensor is switched to the pursuit mode and deployed to capture the target. The cost of operating the sensors is determined from the geometric properties of the network, environment and probability of target detection. The above case study is motivated by the Marco Polo game played by children in swimming pools. Second, we develop adaptive sampling of targets positions in order to minimize energy consumption, while satisfying performance guarantees such as increased probability of detection over time, and no-escape conditions. A parsimonious predictor-corrector tracking filter, that uses geometrical properties of targets\u27 tracks to estimate their positions using imperfect and intermittent measurements, is presented. It is shown that this filter requires substantially less information and processing power than the Unscented Kalman Filter and Sampling Importance Resampling Particle Filter, while providing comparable estimation performance in the presence of intermittent information. Third, we investigate stability of nonlinear control systems under intermittent information. We replace the traditional periodic paradigm, where the up-to-date information is transmitted and control laws are executed in a periodic fashion, with the event-triggered paradigm. Building on the small gain theorem, we develop input-output triggered control algorithms yielding stable closed-loop systems. In other words, based on the currently available (but outdated) measurements of the outputs and external inputs of a plant, a mechanism triggering when to obtain new measurements and update the control inputs is provided. Depending on the noise environment, the developed algorithm yields stable, asymptotically stable, and Lp-stable (with bias) closed-loop systems. Control loops are modeled as interconnections of hybrid systems for which novel results on Lp-stability are presented. Prediction of a triggering event is achieved by employing Lp-gains over a finite horizon in the small gain theorem. By resorting to convex programming, a method to compute Lp-gains over a finite horizon is devised. Next, we investigate optimal intermittent feedback for nonlinear control systems. Using the currently available measurements from a plant, we develop a methodology that outputs when to update the control law with new measurements such that a given cost function is minimized. Our cost function captures trade-offs between the performance and energy consumption of the control system. The optimization problem is formulated as a Dynamic Programming problem, and Approximate Dynamic Programming is employed to solve it. Instead of advocating a particular approximation architecture for Approximate Dynamic Programming, we formulate properties that successful approximation architectures satisfy. In addition, we consider problems with partially observable states, and propose Particle Filtering to deal with partially observable states and intermittent feedback. Finally, we investigate a decentralized output synchronization problem of heterogeneous linear systems. We develop a self-triggered output broadcasting policy for the interconnected systems. Broadcasting time instants adapt to the current communication topology. For a fixed topology, our broadcasting policy yields global exponential output synchronization, and Lp-stable output synchronization in the presence of disturbances. Employing a converse Lyapunov theorem for impulsive systems, we provide an average dwell time condition that yields disturbance-to-state stable output synchronization in case of switching topology. Our approach is applicable to directed and unbalanced communication topologies.\u2
