Special issue on smart interactions in cyber-physical systems: Humans, agents, robots, machines, and sensors
In recent years, there has been increasing interaction between humans and nonâhuman systems as we move further beyond the industrial age, the information age, and as we move into the fourthâgeneration society. The ability to distinguish between human and nonâhuman capabilities has become more difficult to discern. Given this, it is common that cyberâphysical systems (CPSs) are rapidly integrated with human functionality, and humans have become increasingly dependent on CPSs to perform their daily routines.The constant indicators of a future where human and nonâhuman CPSs relationships consistently interact and where they allow each other to navigate through a set of nonâtrivial goals is an interesting and rich area of research, discovery, and practical work area. The evidence of con- vergence has rapidly gained clarity, demonstrating that we can use complex combinations of sensors, artificial intelli- gence, and data to augment human life and knowledge. To expand the knowledge in this area, we should explain how to model, design, validate, implement, and experiment with these complex systems of interaction, communication, and networking, which will be developed and explored in this special issue. This special issue will include ideas of the future that are relevant for understanding, discerning, and developing the relationship between humans and nonâ human CPSs as well as the practical nature of systems that facilitate the integration between humans, agents, robots, machines, and sensors (HARMS).Fil: Kim, Donghan. The progress toward more sustainable energy, water and environmental systems approaches and applications
This editorial provides an overview of ten scientific articles published as the Special paper selection in Thermal Science. The papers were selected from almost six hundred contributions, presented at the 16th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES 2021), held on October 10-15, 2021 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The topics covered in the Special paper selection include economics of electricity markets, nuclear technology, repowering of the coal-based power plant, hybrid renewable energy system, sustainable biomass handling and conversion, post-combustion emissions control, and efficient cooling technology. The editorial also emphasised the papers recently published in the Special Issues of leading scientific journals dedicated to the series of SDEWES Conferences

Fronthaul-Constrained Cloud Radio Access Networks: Insights and Challenges
As a promising paradigm for fifth generation (5G) wireless communication
systems, cloud radio access networks (C-RANs) have been shown to reduce both
capital and operating expenditures, as well as to provide high spectral
efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). The fronthaul in such networks,
defined as the transmission link between a baseband unit (BBU) and a remote
radio head (RRH), requires high capacity, but is often constrained. This
article comprehensively surveys recent advances in fronthaul-constrained
C-RANs, including system architectures and key techniques. In particular, key
techniques for alleviating the impact of constrained fronthaul on SE/EE and
quality of service for users, including compression and quantization,
large-scale coordinated processing and clustering, and resource allocation
optimization, are discussed. Open issues in terms of software-defined
networking, network function virtualization, and partial centralization are
