    Cycles in Random Bipartite Graphs

In this paper we study cycles in random bipartite graph G(n,n,p)G(n,n,p). We prove that if p≫n−2/3p\gg n^{-2/3}, then G(n,n,p)G(n,n,p) a.a.s. satisfies the following. Every subgraph Gâ€Č⊂G(n,n,p)G'\subset G(n,n,p) with more than (1+o(1))n2p/2(1+o(1))n^2p/2 edges contains a cycle of length tt for all even t∈[4,(1+o(1))n/30]t\in[4,(1+o(1))n/30]. Our theorem complements a previous result on bipancyclicity, and is closely related to a recent work of Lee and Samotij.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

DiszkrĂ©t matematikai mĂłdszerekkel strukturĂĄlis Ă©s kvantitatĂv összefĂŒggĂ©seket bizonyĂtottunk; algoritmusokat terveztĂŒnk, komplexitĂĄsukat elemeztĂŒk. Az eredmĂ©nyek a grĂĄfok Ă©s hipergrĂĄfok elmĂ©letĂ©hez, valamint on-line ĂŒtemezĂ©shez kapcsolĂłdnak. NĂ©hĂĄny kiemelĂ©s: - Pontosan leĂrtuk azokat a szerkezeti feltĂ©teleket, amelyeknek teljesĂŒlni kell ahhoz, hogy egy kommunikĂĄciĂłs hĂĄlĂłzatban Ă©s annak minden összefĂŒggƑ rĂ©szĂ©ben legyen olyan, megadott tĂpusĂș összefĂŒggƑ rĂ©szhĂĄlĂłzat, ahonnan az összes többi elem közvetlenĂŒl elĂ©rhetƑ. (A problĂ©ma kĂ©t Ă©vtizeden ĂĄt megoldatlan volt.) - Aszimptotikusan pontos becslĂ©st adtunk egy n-elemƱ alaphalmaz olyan, k-asokbĂłl ĂĄllĂł halmazrendszereinek minimĂĄlis mĂ©retĂ©re, amelyekben minden k-osztĂĄlyĂș partĂciĂłhoz van olyan halmaz, ami az összes partĂciĂł-osztĂĄlyt metszi. (Nyitott problĂ©ma volt 1973 Ăłta, több szerzƑ egymĂĄstĂłl fĂŒggetlenĂŒl is felvetette.) - Halmazrendszerek partĂciĂłira az eddigieknĂ©l ĂĄltalĂĄnosabb modellt vezettĂŒnk be, megvizsgĂĄltuk rĂ©szosztĂĄlyainak hierarchikus szerkezetĂ©t Ă©s hatĂ©kony algoritmusokat adtunk. (Sok alkalmazĂĄs vĂĄrhatĂł az erƑforrĂĄs-allokĂĄciĂł terĂŒletĂ©n.) - Kidolgoztunk egy mĂłdszert, amellyel lokĂĄlisan vĂ©ges pozĂciĂłs jĂĄtĂ©kok nyerƑ stratĂ©giĂĄja megtalĂĄlhatĂł mindössze lineĂĄris mĂ©retƱ memĂłria hasznĂĄlatĂĄval. - FĂ©lig on-line ĂŒtemezĂ©si algoritmusokat terveztĂŒnk (kĂ©tgĂ©pes feladatra, nem azonos sebessĂ©gƱ processzorokra), amelyeknek versenykĂ©pessĂ©gi arĂĄnya bizonyĂtottan jobb, mint ami a legjobb teljesen on-line mĂłdszerekkel elĂ©rhetƑ. | Applying discrete mathematical methods, we proved structural and quantitative relations, designed algorithms and analyzed their complexity. The results deal with graph and hypergraph theory and on-line scheduling. Some selected ones are: - We described the exact structural conditions which have to hold in order that an intercommunication network and each of its connected parts contain a connected subnetwork of prescribed type, from which all the other nodes of the network can be reached via direct link. (This problem was open for two decades.) - We gave asymptotically tight estimates on the minimum size of set systems of k-element sets over an n-element set such that, for each k-partition of the set, the set system contains a k-set meeting all classes of the partition. (This was an open problem since 1973, raised by several authors independently.) - We introduced a new model, more general than the previous ones, for partitions of set systems. We studied the hierarchic structure of its subclasses, and designed efficient algorithms. (Many applications are expected in the area of resource allocation.) - We developed a method to learn winning strategies in locally finite positional games, which requires linear-size memory only. - We designed semi-online scheduling algorithms (for two uniform processors of unequal speed), whose competitive ratio provably beats the best possible one achievable in the purely on-line setting

Geometric Assortative Growth Model for Small-World Networks

    Get PDF
It has been shown that both humanly constructed and natural networks are often characterized by small-world phenomenon and assortative mixing. In this paper, we propose a geometrically growing model for small-world networks. The model displays both tunable small-world phenomenon and tunable assortativity. We obtain analytical solutions of relevant topological properties such as order, size, degree distribution, degree correlation, clustering, transitivity, and diameter. It is also worth noting that the model can be viewed as a generalization for an iterative construction of Farey graphs

501 Baseball Books Fans Must Read before They Die

Propounding his “small ball theory” of sports literature, George Plimpton proposed that “the smaller the ball, the more formidable the literature.” Of course he had the relatively small baseball in mind, because its literature is formidable—vast and varied, instructive, often wildly entertaining, and occasionally brilliant. From this bewildering array of baseball books, Ron Kaplan has chosen 501 of the best, making it easier for fans to find just the books to suit them (or to know what they’re missing). From biography, history, fiction, and instruction to books about ballparks, business, and rules, anyone who loves to read about baseball will find in this book a companionable guide, far more fun than a reference work has any right to be

Understanding fan culture : characteristics, terminology and limits

    Get PDF
Fan Culture has largely been discussed when linked with Media Studies – be it regarding the effects of television and/or the Internet, or its historical evolution. This study proposes to investigate Fan Culture by exploring how it works and which are its defining characteristics, terminology and limits. Inevitably intertwined with Popular Culture, this dissertation will try to identify multiple fandoms and distinguish what unites them – as well as what separates them. Exploring topics like fan identification, as well as gender and violence (among others), will allow for a greater clarity on the impact of the phenomenon in both social and cultural life. Fan Culture can be thought of as a wide spectrum. This investigation wishes to better define and analyze the phenomenon and its dynamics. Understanding fans as both cultural objects and active agents in the production of culture, this dissertation will make use of a qualitative analysis of fundamental texts, as well as a secondary data analysis of three quantitative studies to further define the culture produced for and by the fans.

Personality inventory study of Y.M.C.A. Adult program secretaries

Leaders in the Young Men’s Christian Association have boon concerned for some time about the decline of activity and comparative lack of participation on the part of young adults in its program. The concern is understandable in view of the fact that the Y.M.C.A. originally started around a nucleus of young adults - young men engaged in the drapery trades in London. The Y has emerged through the years as a leader in the field of boys’ work, and work with older adults, and has lost its original character of working among young adults. A Commission was appointed by the Association of Secretaries’ Adult Program Section to study the problems affecting work with young adults. Its findings were reported at a conference of Adult Program Secretaries, and later published in a publication entitled At Work With Young Adults . (1) Following this, it was decided that further exploration of the problems of working with young adults was needed. A Committee, made up of a cross-section of the Adult Program Secretaryship, was called together in St. Louis on two occasions. This group outlined a plan which offered two next steps for study: first, Blocks to Effective Program Within the Secretary Himself , and, second, Blocks to Effective Program Within the Movement . Commissions were appointed to follow through on these studies. The original purpose of this study was to determine if there are ’\u27blocks to effective adult program within the Adult Program Secretary himself. It was felt that perhaps there are basic motivational factors, personality traits, and other psychological characteristics that might be an obstacle to a man as he attempts to do a quality adult program job. The overall problem posed by the Commission then was: Is there a relationship between the job performance of an Adult Program Secretary and his psychological makeup? Due to the limitations of time and expense, it was decided to limit this particular study of psychological factors within the Secretary to a study of personality. This study, therefore, represents a start in the direction of studying the psychological makeup of Y.M.C.A. Adult Program Secretaries

The Death of Democracy, Liberalism and Human Rights

America and the world are in the process of collapse from excessive population growth, most of it for the last century, and now all of it, due to 3rd world people. Consumption of resources and the addition of 4 billion more ca. 2100 will collapse industrial civilization and bring about starvation, disease, violence and war on a staggering scale. The earth loses at least 1% of its topsoil every year, so as it nears 2100, most of its food growing capacity will be gone. Billions will die and nuclear war is all but certain. In America, this is being hugely accelerated by massive immigration and immigrant reproduction, combined with abuses made possible by democracy. Depraved human nature inexorably turns the dream of democracy and diversity into a nightmare of crime and poverty. China will continue to overwhelm America and the world, as long as it maintains the dictatorship which limits selfishness. The root cause of collapse is the inability of our innate psychology to adapt to the modern world, which leads people to treat unrelated persons as though they had common interests. The idea of human rights is an evil fantasy promoted by leftists to draw attention away from the merciless destruction of the earth by unrestrained 3rd world motherhood. This, plus ignorance of basic biology and psychology, leads to the social engineering delusions of the partially educated who control democratic societies. Few understand that if you help one person you harm someone else—there is no free lunch and every single item anyone consumes destroys the earth beyond repair. Consequently, social policies everywhere are unsustainable and one by one all societies without stringent controls on selfishness will collapse into anarchy or dictatorship. The most basic facts, almost never mentioned, are that there are not enough resources in America or the world to lift a significant percentage of the poor out of poverty and keep them there. The attempt to do this is bankrupting America and destroying the world. The earth’s capacity to produce food decreases daily, as does our genetic quality. And now, as always, by far the greatest enemy of the poor is other poor and not the rich. Without dramatic and immediate changes, there is no hope for preventing the collapse of America, or any country that follows a democratic system
