An agent-based DDM for high level architecture
The Data Distribution Management (DDM) service is one of the six services provided in the Runtime Infrastructure (RTI) of High Level Architecture (HLA). Its purpose is to perform data filtering and reduce irrelevant data communicated between federates. The two DDM schemes proposed for RTI, region based and grid based DDM, are oriented to send as little irrelevant data to subscribers as possible, but only manage to filter part of this information and some irrelevant data is still being communicated. Previously (G. Tan et al., 2000), we employed intelligent agents to perform data filtering in HLA, implemented an agent based DDM in RTI (ARTI) and compared it with the other two filtering mechanisms. The paper reports on additional experiments, results and analysis using two scenarios: the AWACS sensing aircraft simulation and the air traffic control simulation scenario. Experimental results show that compared with other mechanisms, the agent based approach communicates only relevant data and minimizes network communication, and is also comparable in terms of time efficiency. Parallel Sort-Based Matching for Data Distribution Management on Shared-Memory Multiprocessors
In this paper we consider the problem of identifying intersections between
two sets of d-dimensional axis-parallel rectangles. This is a common problem
that arises in many agent-based simulation studies, and is of central
importance in the context of High Level Architecture (HLA), where it is at the
core of the Data Distribution Management (DDM) service. Several realizations of
the DDM service have been proposed; however, many of them are either
inefficient or inherently sequential. These are serious limitations since
multicore processors are now ubiquitous, and DDM algorithms -- being
CPU-intensive -- could benefit from additional computing power. We propose a
parallel version of the Sort-Based Matching algorithm for shared-memory
multiprocessors. Sort-Based Matching is one of the most efficient serial
algorithms for the DDM problem, but is quite difficult to parallelize due to
data dependencies. We describe the algorithm and compute its asymptotic running
time; we complete the analysis by assessing its performance and scalability
through extensive experiments on two commodity multicore systems based on a

Tradeoffs between AC power quality and DC bus ripple for 3-phase 3-wire inverter-connected devices within microgrids
Visions of future power systems contain high penetrations of inverters which are used to convert power from dc (direct current) to ac (alternating current) or vice versa. The behavior of these devices is dependent upon the choice and implementation of the control algorithms. In particular, there is a tradeoff between dc bus ripple and ac power quality. This study examines the tradeoffs. Four control modes are examined. Mathematical derivations are used to predict the key implications of each control mode. Then, an inverter is studied both in simulation and in hardware at the 10 kVA scale, in different microgrid environments of grid impedance and power quality. It is found that voltage-drive mode provides the best ac power quality, but at the expense of high dc bus ripple. Sinusoidal current generation and dual-sequence controllers provide relatively low dc bus ripple and relatively small effects on power quality. High-bandwidth dc bus ripple minimization mode works well in environments of low grid impedance, but is highly unsuitable within higher impedance microgrid environments and/or at low switching frequencies. The findings also suggest that the certification procedures given by G5/4, P29 and IEEE 1547 are potentially not adequate to cover all applications and scenarios
Large Eddy Simulations of gaseous flames in gas turbine combustion chambers
Recent developments in numerical schemes, turbulent combustion models and the regular increase of computing power allow Large Eddy Simulation (LES) to be applied to real industrial burners. In this paper, two types of LES in complex geometry combustors and of specific interest for aeronautical gas turbine burners are reviewed: (1) laboratory-scale combustors, without compressor or turbine, in which advanced measurements are possible and (2) combustion chambers of existing engines operated in realistic operating conditions. Laboratory-scale burners are designed to assess modeling and funda- mental flow aspects in controlled configurations. They are necessary to gauge LES strategies and identify potential limitations. In specific circumstances, they even offer near model-free or DNS-like LES computations. LES in real engines illustrate the potential of the approach in the context of industrial burners but are more difficult to validate due to the limited set of available measurements. Usual approaches for turbulence and combustion sub-grid models including chemistry modeling are first recalled. Limiting cases and range of validity of the models are specifically recalled before a discussion on the numerical breakthrough which have allowed LES to be applied to these complex cases. Specific issues linked to real gas turbine chambers are discussed: multi-perforation, complex acoustic impedances at inlet and outlet, annular chambers.. Examples are provided for mean flow predictions (velocity, temperature and species) as well as unsteady mechanisms (quenching, ignition, combustion instabil- ities). Finally, potential perspectives are proposed to further improve the use of LES for real gas turbine combustor designs
Innovative in silico approaches to address avian flu using grid technology
The recent years have seen the emergence of diseases which have spread very
quickly all around the world either through human travels like SARS or animal
migration like avian flu. Among the biggest challenges raised by infectious
emerging diseases, one is related to the constant mutation of the viruses which
turns them into continuously moving targets for drug and vaccine discovery.
Another challenge is related to the early detection and surveillance of the
diseases as new cases can appear just anywhere due to the globalization of
exchanges and the circulation of people and animals around the earth, as
recently demonstrated by the avian flu epidemics. For 3 years now, a
collaboration of teams in Europe and Asia has been exploring some innovative in
silico approaches to better tackle avian flu taking advantage of the very large
computing resources available on international grid infrastructures. Grids were
used to study the impact of mutations on the effectiveness of existing drugs
against H5N1 and to find potentially new leads active on mutated strains. Grids
allow also the integration of distributed data in a completely secured way. The
paper presents how we are currently exploring how to integrate the existing
data sources towards a global surveillance network for molecular epidemiology.Comment: 7 pages, submitted to Infectious Disorders - Drug Target
