What People Revealed through Greetings
Greeting is an important part of communicative competence that each member of speech
community must know hence s/he can be function appropriately in the speech community. It
is culturally bonded that it becomes the first and formemost part of language skill taught to
children in learning in their native language and students in learning their second or
foreign language. The study is aimed at finding out what people may reveal when they
greet each other as well as the kind of greeting they used. The study is conducted to
Indonesian who live in United States, by observing and filming their interactions during a
party. During their interaction, the participants do not only used popular term of greetings
such as ‗hallo‘ or ‗how are you‘ but they also greet each other by other forms such as
giving compliments, hence it suggest more than acknoledging other‘s presence. Beside
verbal greetings, there are also types of body gestures used as greeting suggesting the
different types of background relationships. The most obvious observable fact is that
greeting is consistently used as mark of solidarity with the consistent similar respond,
though it may as well use to reveal power and authority. One of important means of
greeting is that it is used to maintain their cultural identity. Male and female respondents
also show different ways in using verbal greetings and gesture showing that they greet each
other. They also use different ways in giving compliments and in responding toward them

Sistem Sapaan Bahasa Melayu Riau di Sabak Auh Kabupaten Siak Sri Indrapura
This study aimed to describe the system greeting Riau Malay in Sabak Auh Siak Sri Indrapura. The system consisted of greeting greeting kinship and nonkekerabatan. The method used in this study used descriptive qualitative method. Source of research data from multiple informants from Sabak Auh district community. The results of the analysis conducted that the system greeting. Families are the core of eight greeting, greeting the broad family as much as sixteen greeting, greeting in kinship based nicknames as many as four, sapan in kinship based endearment five greeting. In addition nonkekerabatan system based on the age of seven greetings, greetings by the religious title five greetings, greetings by profession seven greeting, the greeting by the nickname of three greetings. The existing system was able to avoid misunderstandings between the user's language, capable of understanding and avoid komplik in the process of greeting greetings

The objective of this research is to describe the use of greeting system in Dayak Iban language at Kumang Jaya, Empanang sub-district, Kapuas Hulu regency, either in bloodline relationship kinship or in marriage relationship kinship. The method of this research used descriptive by qualitative approach. The source of the data in this research is the direct speech of Dayak Iban society at Kumang Jaya, containing greeting kinship, not only in bloodline relationship kinship but also in marriage relationship kinship. The technique of the data collecting in this research is used note taking and recorded. Based on the result of the analisys, it could be concluded the greeting in Dayak Iban language, divided into: 1). greeting kinship because of bloodline relationship, 2). greeting kinship because of marriage relationship kinship, 3). greeting kinship system in Dayak Iban society
SAPAAN KEKERABATAN BAHASA KERINCI DI KECAMATAN GUNUNG RAYA KABUPATEN KERINCI
ABSTRACT
This article aims to analyze the types of kinship greeting words in Kerinci language and social factors that influence the types of kinship greeting words in Kerinci language in Gunung Raya sub-district, Kerinci district. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The research data is the kinship greeting words in Kerinci language in Gunung Raya sub-district, Kerinci district. The research data comes from informants as native speakers of Kerinci language who live in Gunung Raya sub-district.The result of this study is the community kinship system of Gunung Raya sub-district based on matrilineal lineage, someone will follow the lineage of mother. The male becomes a kindred based on the marriage line. The kinship greeting words in Kerinci language in Gunung Raya sub-district based on the lineage consist of 25 greeting words, while the kinship greeting words in the Kerinci language in Gunung Raya sub-district based on the marriage line consist of 29 greeting words. Social factors that influence the form of kinship greeting words in Kerinci language in Gunung Raya sub-district are social distance, age, gender, social status, physical characteristics, and language contact.

This article explains the types of greeting words used by Minangkabau people in Ujuang Batuang and how the words are used. The basic technique used in this study is tapping technique, while the advanced technique used in this study is the simak libat cakap (SLC) technique and simak bebas libat cakap (SBLC) technique, continued with note technique.The results found three categories of greeting words used by the Ujuang Batuang community, namely: (1) general greeting words, (2) adat greeting words, and (3) religious greeting words
