VNC2014 : IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference , Dec 3-5, 2014 , Paderborn, GermanySerious traffic congestion is a major social problem in large cities. Inefficient setting of traffic signal cycles, especially, is one of the main causes of congestion. Green Wave is a method for controlling traffic signals which allows one-way traffic to pass through a series of intersections without being stopped by a red light. Green Wave was tested in several cities around the world, but the results were not satisfactory. Two of the problems with Green Wave are that it still stops the crossing traffic, and it forms congestion in the traffic turning into or out of the crossing streets. To solve these problems, we propose a method of controlling traffic signals, GreenSwirl, in combination with a route guidance method, GreenDrive. GreenSwirl controls traffic signals to enable a smooth flow of traffic through signals times to turn green in succession and through non-stop circular routes through the city. The GreenWave technology is extended thereby. We also use navigation systems to optimize the overall control of the city's traffic. We did a simulation using the traffic simulator SUMO and the road network of Manhattan Island in New York. We confirmed that our method shortens the average travel time by 10%-60%, even when not all cars on the road are equipped to use this system

Traffic signal control is an important challenge in urban planning and transport management, with significant implications for congestion, vehicle emissions, and travel times. Traditional traffic control algorithms are based on specific rules, static, and are not able to adapt to the different situations of traffic flow. This has led to the exploration of dynamic and machine learning algorithms to optimize traffic signal timings. This study presents a comparative analysis of five traffic control algorithms - classical methods like Webster's method, Greenwave, and Maxband, and more modern methods like Max Pressure and a DQN model, across a variety of traffic scenarios. The implementation of classical methods is relatively straightforward. Webster's method aims to minimize delay by adjusting the cycle length of signals based on the critical lane volume and the saturation flow rate. Greenwave facilitates the coordination of traffic signals on arterial roads to create a "green wave" of successive green lights for vehicles. Maxband also optimizes arterial roads by adjusting green times to create maximum throughput. The modern methods take a different approach. Max Pressure uses real-time data to adjust signal timings, favoring directions with larger vehicle queues. Meanwhile, the DQN model leverages reinforcement learning(RL) to learn optimal traffic signal timings based on traffic states, actions, and corresponding rewards. The DQN model's architecture includes an input layer that receives traffic state representation, hidden layers for capturing complex correlations between traffic states and actions, and an output layer for predicting optimum values for specific actions. Evaluation of these methods is conducted through simulations using the SUMO traffic simulator across seven scenarios, ranging from a simple single intersection to a complex urban grid which resembles Manhattan. Performance metrics, including total delay and total simulation time for all the vehicles to exit the grid, are used to compare these methods. Results reveal that the DQN method has better results over all other methods across all scenarios, demonstrating superior efficiency even in less complicated situations and showing flexibility in dealing with high complexity and traffic volume. DQN's adaptability and learning capability allow it to optimize signals based on past experiences and adaptive traffic flow dynamics, proving it to be a promising method for future traffic management. While classical methods have their advantages, especially in certain circumstances, modern AI-driven techniques like DQN could lead to more efficient traffic management and reduction in waiting times. This study's findings indicate a potential shift in traffic signal control towards machine learning-based methods. However, further research is needed to investigate DQN's performance under other traffic scenarios and to determine how to integrate such systems into real-world traffic management with a focus also on the cost for installing and maintaining the system

Prioritizing traffic signals for trams crossing intersections without stops can increase the service punctuality and travel speed of trams, but it may also increase the delays of other vehicles at intersections. This paper presents a model on coordinated control of traffic signals among successive intersections along the tramline, taking into account driving characteristics of trams and vehicles. The objective is maximizing the valid bandwidth of vehicle green wave to reduce vehicle delays, while the trams cross intersections without stops. Linear Interactive and General Optimizer (LINGO) is applied to solve the proposed model and VISSIM simulation software is adopted to assess the solutions attained by the proposed model and the previous TRAMBAND model. Case studies show that the solutions given by the proposed model facilitate trams to go through all intersections along the tramline without stops. In comparison with the TRAMBAND model, the proposed model reduces tram delay by 13.14 s/pcu and increases the throughput of vehicles at intersections by 4.45% and reduces vehicle delays by 2.22%. Extensive simulations have verified that the performance of the proposed model is stable under different tram headways, dwell time, and traffic volumes. It is also found that the tram headway must be multiple of traffic signal cycle time to completely realize green wave control of all trams at all intersections along the tramline

Operational performance optimization of signalized intersections is one of the most important tasks for traffic engineers and researchers. To compensate for the limitations of practical implementation, simulation software packages have been widely used to evaluate different optimization strategies and thus to improve the efficiency of the intersections as well as the entire network. However, for the existing optimization studies on signalized intersections, the relationships among various optimization measures and the combination of strategies have not been fully investigated. In this paper, uniform design experimentation was introduced to combine different optimization measures into strategies and achieve the minimum time cost in model construction. VISSIM software package was then calibrated and used to evaluate various optimization strategies and identify the one with the best measurement of performance, namely, control delay at the signalized intersection. By taking a representative congested intersection in Shanghai as a case study, the optimal strategy was identified to reduce the overall control delay by 27.3%, which further verified the modeling capability of the proposed method

The rapid growth of urbanization and the constant demand for mobility have put a great strain on transportation systems in cities. One of the major challenges in these areas is traffic congestion, particularly at signalized intersections. This problem not only leads to longer travel times for commuters, but also results in a significant increase in local and global emissions. The fixed cycle of traffic lights at these intersections is one of the primary reasons for this issue. To address these challenges, applying reinforcement learning to coordinating traffic light controllers has become a highly researched topic in the field of transportation engineering. This paper focuses on the traffic signal control problem, proposing a solution using a multi-agent deep Q-learning algorithm. This study introduces a novel rewarding concept in the multi-agent environment, as the reward schemes have yet to evolve in the following years with the advancement of techniques. The goal of this study is to manage traffic networks in a more efficient manner, taking into account both sustainability and classic measures. The results of this study indicate that the proposed approach can bring about significant improvements in transportation systems. For instance, the proposed approach can reduce fuel consumption by 11% and average travel time by 13%. The results of this study demonstrate the potential of reinforcement learning in improving the coordination of traffic light controllers and reducing the negative impacts of traffic congestion in urban areas. The implementation of this proposed solution could contribute to a more sustainable and efficient transportation system in the future
