Market-based frequency domain decomposition for automated mode shape estimation in wireless sensor networks

Wireless sensing technology has paved the way for the cost-effective deployment of dense networks of sensing transducers within large structural systems. By leveraging the embedded computing power residing within networks of wireless sensors, it has been shown that powerful data analyses can be performed autonomously and in-network, without the need for central data processing. In this study, the power and flexibility of agent-based data processing in the wireless structural monitoring environment is illuminated through the application of market-based techniques to in-network mode shape estimation. Specifically, by drawing on previous wireless sensor work in both decentralized frequency domain decomposition (FDD) and market-based resource allocation, an algorithm derived from free-market principles is developed through which an agent-based wireless sensor network can autonomously and optimally shift emphasis between improving the accuracy of its mode shape calculations and reducing its dependency on any of the traditional limitations of wireless sensor networks: processing time, storage capacity, and power consumption. The developed algorithm is validated by estimating mode shapes using a network of wireless sensors deployed on the mezzanine balcony of Hill Auditorium located at the University of Michigan. GFZ Wireless Seismic Array (GFZ-WISE), a Wireless Mesh Network of Seismic Sensors: New Perspectives for Seismic Noise Array Investigations and Site Monitoring

    Get PDF
Over the last few years, the analysis of seismic noise recorded by two dimensional arrays has been confirmed to be capable of deriving the subsoil shear-wave velocity structure down to several hundred meters depth. In fact, using just a few minutes of seismic noise recordings and combining this with the well known horizontal-to-vertical method, it has also been shown that it is possible to investigate the average one dimensional velocity structure below an array of stations in urban areas with a sufficient resolution to depths that would be prohibitive with active source array surveys, while in addition reducing the number of boreholes required to be drilled for site-effect analysis. However, the high cost of standard seismological instrumentation limits the number of sensors generally available for two-dimensional array measurements (i.e., of the order of 10), limiting the resolution in the estimated shear-wave velocity profiles. Therefore, new themes in site-effect estimation research by two-dimensional arrays involve the development and application of low-cost instrumentation, which potentially allows the performance of dense-array measurements, and the development of dedicated signal-analysis procedures for rapid and robust estimation of shear-wave velocity profiles. In this work, we present novel low-cost wireless instrumentation for dense two-dimensional ambient seismic noise array measurements that allows the real–time analysis of the surface-wavefield and the rapid estimation of the local shear-wave velocity structure for site response studies. We first introduce the general philosophy of the new system, as well as the hardware and software that forms the novel instrument, which we have tested in laboratory and field studies

Weighting factor elicitation for sustainability assessment of energy technologies

    Get PDF
In this paper, an approach for sustainability assessment of innovative energy technologies is expanded by multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) methods to aggregate indicator results and support decision-making. One of the most important steps for MCDA is to determine weighting factors for individual indicators. Thus, a workshop was performed to elicit weighting factors for sustainability assessments of energy technologies from developers of such technologies and energy system modellers from academia. These stakeholders expressed their preferences with respect to sustainability criteria using the Simple Multi Attribute Rating Technique (SMART). A triple bottom line approach of sustainable development was used as the basis for the aggregation of indicator results. This approach is based on Life Cycle Costing, Life Cycle Assessment and social indicators. Obtained weighting factors were applied to an integrative sustainability assessment with the aggregation method Preference Ranking Organization METHod for Enrichment of Evaluations (PROMETHEE). Hydrogen-based mobility as an important technology to foster decarbonization in the transport sector is used as a case study for the application of the derived weighting factors. A conventional vehicle, powered by fossil fuel, is compared with a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) for the year 2050. Different options (pipeline, compressed gaseous hydrogen, liquid hydrogen, liquid organic hydrogen carrier) are discussed for the supply of hydrogen. The results for this weighting factor set are compared with an equal weighting scenario of the three sustainability dimensions and indicators within one sustainability dimension. The FCEV, using pipelines for hydrogen supply, came out first in the assessment as well as in all sensitivity analyses

MercyHealth Internship: IT as a Unit

    Get PDF
This is a CSIS 494 Field Experience paper about an internship in a healthcare organization called MercyHealth. My internship would be described as generalized. The paper will be mainly talking about the different aspects of IT and how they all come together to create progress, and cohesiveness in the organization. I had the opportunity to see different aspects of their IT department by sitting down in project meetings. I was able to job shadow multiple staff from admins to PC techs to network engineers. I was able to see first-hand how an organization, and IT respond to disaster, and how they adapt and come up with a recovery/contingency plan. I interned in MercyHealth the summer of 2018 starting in May 7 and ended in Aug 3. Perhaps this paper could shed light on how IT operate in a healthcare organization

Use of the perforated balloon catheter to infuse marker substances into diseased coronary artery walls after experimental postmortem angioplasty

    Get PDF
AbstractA perforated balloon catheter was used in human coronary arteries after postmortem angioplasty had been performed. The catheter used has a standard angioplasty balloon with a pattern of laser-produced holes, 25 μm in size, which generate streams of fluid under pressure. Studies of the routes by which marker substances enter diseased arterial tissue when infused by the perforated balloon after experimental angioplasty are described. A colored marker dye entered the new crevices and dissection planes created by the angioplasty, but did not extend > 2 cm either proximal or distal to the perfused segment.Horseradish peroxidase entered tissue not only from the lumen and adventitia as occurs with its infusion into normal tissue with the perforated balloon, but also extended from new crevices and dissection planes created by the angioplasty. Platelet aggregation, coagulation and cell proliferation, the likely causes of restenosis after angioplasty, originate in the sites of greatest tissue disruption and blood stasis. These postmortem studies suggest that active drugs are delivered to the arterial wall in a manner likely to be effective in preventing these events

Structural Health Monitoring Using Wireless Technologies: An Ambient Vibration Test on the Adolphe Bridge, Luxembourg City

    Get PDF
Major threats to bridges primarily consist of the aging of the structural elements, earthquake-induced shaking and standing waves generated by windstorms. The necessity of information on the state of health of structures in real-time, allowing for timely warnings in the case of damaging events, requires structural health monitoring (SHM) systems that allow the risks of these threats to be mitigated. Here we present the results of a short-duration experiment carried out with low-cost wireless instruments for monitoring the vibration characteristics and dynamic properties of a strategic civil infrastructure, the Adolphe Bridge in Luxembourg City. The Adolphe Bridge is a masonry arch construction dating from 1903 and will undergo major renovation works in the upcoming years. Our experiment shows that a network of these wireless sensing units is well suited to monitor the vibration characteristics of such a historical arch bridge and hence represents a low-cost and efficient solution for SHM

Barium Zirconate (BaZrO3) is a promising candidate for structural to electronic application. Different industry demands nano scale powder for the technology enhancement and hence, the preparation of BaZrO3 nano-powders and their sintering study through microstructure synchronization are the prime interest of this research. A typical combined wet chemical and calcination technique was employed to synthesis of 100nm BaZrO3 nano-powders. Elongated Barium carbonate (BaCO3) nano rod was prepared through wet chemical method, whereas, near spherical yttria stabilized zirconia nanoparticle was used to prepare this BaZrO3. Transmission electron microscope analysis (TEM), XRD and BET surface area confirmed the purity and morphology of developed nanoparticles. Prior to sintering, dilatometric study was conducted to understand the sintering behaviour this class of nanoparticles. A wide horizon of sintering profile optimized the sintering condition with consideration of relative density and microstructure. The nano powder was near to 98% dense at 1650oC for 2h. Field Emission Scanning Electron (FESEM) microscope study reveals the grain size is around 250nm. The developed perovskite BaZrO3 nano powders could be successfully used for different sectors
