    The Influence of Green Strategies Design onto Quality Requirements Prioritization

    [Context and Motivation] Modern society is facing important challenges that are critical to improve its environmental performance. The literature reports on many green strategies aimed at reducing energy consumption. However, little research has been carried out so far on including green strategies in software design. [Question/problem] In this paper, we investigate how green software strategies can contribute to, and influence, quality requirements prioritization performed iteratively throughout a service-oriented software design process. [Methodology] In collaboration with a Dutch industry partner, an empirical study was carried out with 19 student teams playing the role of software designers, who completed the design of a real-life project through 7 weekly deliverables. [Principle ideas/results] We identified a list of quality requirements (QRs) that were considered by the teams as part of their architectural decisions when green strategies were introduced. By analyzing relations between QRs and green strategies, our study confirms usability as the most used QR for addressing green strategies that allow to create people awareness. Qualities like reliability, performance, interoperability, scalability and availability emerged as the most relevant for addressing service-awareness green strategies. [Contribution] If used at the beginning of a green software project, our results help including the most relevant QRs for addressing those green software strategies that are e.g. the most domain-generic (like increase carbon footprint awareness, paperless service provisioning, virtualization)

    Effect of the green-emitting CaF2:Ce3+,Tb3+ phosphor particles’ size on color rendering index and color quality scale of the in-cup packaging multichip white LEDs

    In this paper, we investigate the effect of the green-emitting CaF2:Ce (3+), Tb (3+) phosphor particle's size on the color rendering index (CRI) and the color quality scale (CQS) of the in-cup packaging multichip white LEDs (MCW-LEDs). For this purpose, 7000K and 8500K in-cup packaging MCW-LEDs is simulated by the commercial software Light Tools. Moreover, scattering process in the phosphor layers is investigated by using Mie Theory with Mat Lab software. Finally, the research results show that the green-emitting CaF2: Ce (3+), Tb (3+) phosphor's size crucially influences on the CRI and CQS. From that point of view, CaF2: Ce (3+), Tb (3+) can be proposed as a potential practical direction for manufacturing the in-cup packaging phosphor WLEDs.Web of Science13235134

    In this paper we present a software system that is being developed at the University of Leeds for simulating and optimizing energy efficient optical core networks. The system is called CORNETO, an acronym for CORe NETwork Optimization. The software implements many of the energy saving concepts, methods and computational heuristics that have been produced by the ongoing INTERNET, INTelligent Energy awaRe NETworks, project. The main objective of the software is to help network operators and planners green their networks while maintaining quality of service.     Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the process of generating and managing building data during its life cycle. Typically it uses three-dimensional, real-time, dynamic building modeling software to increase productivity in building design and construction. The process produces the Building Information Model, which encompasses building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, quantities and properties of building components. On the other hand, Green Building Index (GBI) as the localized sustainability building rating system in Malaysia assesses the impact of building on environment based on energy efficiency, indoor environment quality, sustainable site & management, materials & resources, water efficiency and innovation. By integrating GBI assessment criteria with BIM technology, this research proposes a comparative case study analysis of Residential New Construction (RNC) and Non-Residential New Construction (NRNC) based on the Autodesk Ecotect Analysis software (a comprehensive, concept-to-detail sustainable design analysis tool that provides a wide range of simulation and analysis functionality through desktop and web-service platforms) and Autodesk Green Building Studio (A web-based energy analysis service which performs whole building analysis, optimizes energy efficiency, and works toward carbon neutrality earlier in the design process) to investigate the influence of construction material on energy consumption, lifecycle energy cost and carbon emission

    A Novel Quantitative Approach for Eliminating Sample-To-Sample Variation Using a Hue Saturation Value Analysis Program

    Objectives: As computing technology and image analysis techniques have advanced, the practice of histology has grown from a purely qualitative method to one that is highly quantified. Current image analysis software is imprecise and prone to wide variation due to common artifacts and histological limitations. In order to minimize the impact of these artifacts, a more robust method for quantitative image analysis is required. Methods and Results: Here we present a novel image analysis software, based on the hue saturation value color space, to be applied to a wide variety of histological stains and tissue types. By using hue, saturation, and value variables instead of the more common red, green, and blue variables, our software offers some distinct advantages over other commercially available programs. We tested the program by analyzing several common histological stains, performed on tissue sections that ranged from 4 µm to 10 µm in thickness, using both a red green blue color space and a hue saturation value color space. Conclusion: We demonstrated that our new software is a simple method for quantitative analysis of histological sections, which is highly robust to variations in section thickness, sectioning artifacts, and stain quality, eliminating sample-to-sample variation

    The Energy-Saving Potential of a Green Roof on Existing Residential Buildings. A Case Study of Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia.

    Residential buildings are the major sector in the construction industry that consume energy and affect the whole environment. Controlling these effects has always been the foremost concern, especially the existing ones. This paper addresses a case study of existing residential buildings at Jubail Industrial City in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where the units are reproduced all over the districts.With proper design and maintenance, green roofs can provide cost-effective and sustainable solutions for existing residential buildings. The best set of strategies through the Climate Consultant software have been studied where the strategy of adding the green roof comes as a priority for the selected city. Green roofs, also known as vegetated roofs or rooftop gardens, offer a wide range of benefits for existing residential buildings. These benefits include improved insulation, reduction of stormwater runoff, increased biodiversity, and improved air quality. In addition, green roofs can also provide aesthetic and recreational benefits for residents. Green roofs can reduce a building’s energy consumption, lower urban heat island effects, and extend the roof\u27s life.By using the green roofs suitable type for the existing buildings and simulating the two scenarios for the existing and the proposed cases using the Design Builder software, while using Climate Consultant software recommends strategies, results revealed that the green roof option could reduce the total energy consumption by at least 8.8 %. Besides benefiting the building\u27s users, this approach will provide an economical solution to protect the environment in terms of reducing power consumption and environmental pollution

    In this position paper we discuss the importance of Green IT as a new research field that investigates all the environmental and energy issues related to IT and information systems in general. In particular we focus on the energy consumption of software applications, which is amplified by all the above IT layers in a data center and thus is worth a greater attention. By adopting a top-down approach, we address the problem from a logical perspective and try to identify the original cause that leads to energy consumption, i.e. the elaboration of information. We propose a research roadmap to identify a set of software complexity and quality metrics that can be used to estimate energy consumption and to compare specific software applications

    THE ANTECEDENT AND IMPACT OF GREEN BRAND EQUITY ON HONDA MOTORCYCLE WITH PROGRAMMABLE FUEL INJECTION TECHNOLOGY IN SURABAYA

    This study integrates the research model developed by Ng et al., (2014), Chen (2010), and Bekk et al., (2016) and aims to analyze the antecedent and impact of green brand equity on Honda motorcycle with Programmable Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) technology in Surabaya. A theoretical model with hypothesized relationships is developed consisting of nine latent constructs: perceived quality of a brand, brand credibility, green brand image, green brand perceived value, green satisfaction, green trust, green brand equity, brand attitude, and positive word of mouth communication. The method used to collect the data in this study is distributing questionnaire to 260 respondents who meets the sample characteristics that have been determined. Later, the method used to test the validity and reliability of the data is SPSS 18.0 software and the method used to test the hypotheses is Structural Equation Modeling using Lisrel 8.80 software. The results show that brand credibility, green brand perceived value, and green satisfaction have positive influence on green brand equity, thus having role as the antecedents. On the other hand, green brand image and green trust have no influence on green brand equity. Furthermore, the results show that green brand equity has positive influence on brand attitude and positive word of mouth communication, where the positive influence of green brand equity on positive word of mouth communication can be also through mediation of brand attitude. Thus, brand attitude and positive word of mouth communication are impacts of green brand equity
