    A capacity sharing and stealing strategy for open real-time systems

    This paper focuses on the scheduling of tasks with hard and soft real-time constraints in open and dynamic real-time systems. It starts by presenting a capacity sharing and stealing (CSS) strategy that supports the coexistence of guaranteed and non-guaranteed bandwidth servers to efficiently handle soft-tasks’ overloads by making additional capacity available from two sources: (i) reclaiming unused reserved capacity when jobs complete in less than their budgeted execution time and (ii) stealing reserved capacity from inactive non-isolated servers used to schedule best-effort jobs. CSS is then combined with the concept of bandwidth inheritance to efficiently exchange reserved bandwidth among sets of inter-dependent tasks which share resources and exhibit precedence constraints, assuming no previous information on critical sections and computation times is available. The proposed Capacity Exchange Protocol (CXP) has a better performance and a lower overhead when compared against other available solutions and introduces a novel approach to integrate precedence constraints among tasks of open real-time systems

    A dynamic scheduler that supports the coexistence of guaranteed and non-guaranteed bandwidth servers is proposed. Overloads are handled by an efficient reclaiming of residual capacities originated by early completions as well as by allowing reserved capacity stealing of non-guaranteed bandwidth servers. The proposed dynamic budget accounting mechanism ensures that at a particular time the currently executing server is using a residual capacity, its own capacity or is stealing some reserved capacity, eliminating the need of additional server states or unbounded queues. The server to which the budget accounting is going to be performed is dynamically determined at the time instant when a capacity is needed. This paper describes and evaluates the proposed scheduling algorithm, showing that it can efficiently reduce the mean tardiness of periodic jobs. The achieved results become even more significant when tasks’ computation times have a large variance

    A robust mechanism for adaptive scheduling of multimedia applications

    We propose an adaptive scheduling technique to schedule highly dynamic multimedia tasks on a CPU. We use a combination of two techniques: the first one is a feedback mechanism to track the resource requirements of the tasks based on local observations. The second one is a mechanism that operates with a global visibility, reclaiming unused bandwidth. The combination proves very effective: resource reclaiming increases the robustness of the feedback, while the identification of the correct bandwidth made by the feedback increases the effectiveness of the reclamation. We offer both theoretical results and an extensive experimental validation of the approach

    The capacity exchange protocol

    This paper proposes a new strategy to integrate shared resources and precedence constraints among real-time tasks, assuming no precise information on critical sections and computation times is available. The concept of bandwidth inheritance is combined with a capacity sharing and stealing mechanism to efficiently exchange bandwidth among tasks to minimise the degree of deviation from the ideal system’s behaviour caused by inter-application blocking. The proposed Capacity Exchange Protocol (CXP) is simpler than other proposed solutions for sharing resources in open real-time systems since it does not attempt to return the inherited capacity in the same exact amount to blocked servers. This loss of optimality is worth the reduced complexity as the protocol’s behaviour nevertheless tends to be fair and outperforms the previous solutions in highly dynamic scenarios as demonstrated by extensive simulations. A formal analysis of CXP is presented and the conditions under which it is possible to guarantee hard real-time tasks are discussed

    Dynamic Voltage Scaling for Energy- Constrained Real-Time Systems

    The problem of reducing energy consumption is dominating the design of several real-time systems. The Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS) technique, provided by most microprocessors, allow to balance computational speed versus energy consumption. We present some novel energy-aware scheduling algorithms that allow to expoit this technique while meeting real-time constraints. In particular, we present the GRUB-PA algorithm which, unlike most existing algorithms, allows to reduce energy consumption on real-time systems consisting of any kind of task. We also present a working implementation of the algorithm on Linux

    Provider-Controlled Bandwidth Management for HTTP-based Video Delivery

    Over the past few years, a revolution in video delivery technology has taken place as mobile viewers and over-the-top (OTT) distribution paradigms have significantly changed the landscape of video delivery services. For decades, high quality video was only available in the home via linear television or physical media. Though Web-based services brought video to desktop and laptop computers, the dominance of proprietary delivery protocols and codecs inhibited research efforts. The recent emergence of HTTP adaptive streaming protocols has prompted a re-evaluation of legacy video delivery paradigms and introduced new questions as to the scalability and manageability of OTT video delivery. This dissertation addresses the question of how to enable for content and network service providers the ability to monitor and manage large numbers of HTTP adaptive streaming clients in an OTT environment. Our early work focused on demonstrating the viability of server-side pacing schemes to produce an HTTP-based streaming server. We also investigated the ability of client-side pacing schemes to work with both commodity HTTP servers and our HTTP streaming server. Continuing our client-side pacing research, we developed our own client-side data proxy architecture which was implemented on a variety of mobile devices and operating systems. We used the portable client architecture as a platform for investigating different rate adaptation schemes and algorithms. We then concentrated on evaluating the network impact of multiple adaptive bitrate clients competing for limited network resources, and developing schemes for enforcing fair access to network resources. The main contribution of this dissertation is the definition of segment-level client and network techniques for enforcing class of service (CoS) differentiation between OTT HTTP adaptive streaming clients. We developed a segment-level network proxy architecture which works transparently with adaptive bitrate clients through the use of segment replacement. We also defined a segment-level rate adaptation algorithm which uses download aborts to enforce CoS differentiation across distributed independent clients. The segment-level abstraction more accurately models application-network interactions and highlights the difference between segment-level and packet-level time scales. Our segment-level CoS enforcement techniques provide a foundation for creating scalable managed OTT video delivery services

    QoS-based surrogates selection and service proposal formulation in offloading environments

    Resource constraints are becoming a problem as many of the wireless mobile devices have increased generality. Our work tries to address this growing demand on resources and performance, by proposing the dynamic selection of neighbor nodes for cooperative service execution. This selection is in uenced by user's quality of service requirements expressed in his request, tailoring provided service to user's speci c needs. In this paper we improve our proposal's formulation algorithm with the ability to trade o time for the quality of the solution. At any given time, a complete solution for service execution exists, and the quality of that solution is expected to improve overtime
