    Why Do People Stick with a Specific Social Networking Site? An Integrated Relationship and Uses Gratification Perspective

    Since their inception, social networking sites (SNSs) have experienced exponential growth. While substantial research has been dedicated to users’ initial adoption of SNSs, the fall of MySpace reminds us that the long-term success of SNSs depends on users’ post adoption staying power. Inspired by this, this work-in-progress investigates users’ “stickiness” with a specific SNS. Based on Li et al. (2006)’s Commitment-Trust Model of Website Stickiness (CTM), this paper focuses on the relationships between SNSs and users. To refine CTM in the new context, we further borrow the Uses and Gratifications Theory from the Communication field to propose an integrated model

    Theory of Uses-and-gratifications (U & G) is one of theories used by most of media USAge studies. This theory gives an attention on what people do with media. Formely, that theory was develoved by Kazt and Gurevic. Recently, it has develoved siginificantly, specially on its gratifivations concept. This significant development was influenced by the develpment of new media (internet). This article studied about state of the art of the theory within last 13 years. The result showed that the theory was fuctioned as single or core theory in most studies. Sometimes, several studies used other theory for example Media Dependency Theory. Although those two theories were different to each other in their elements (assumption and concept), but they have a similarity in the term of the study object (audience), and in theoretical tradition (social-psychological). Its gratification concept has a propensity to be miscellaneous. Moreover, media that met with an audience\u27s need have been developing from traditional into new media (internet), even into certain application. Past research approach was generally quantitative by surveying, and sometime qualitative approach to enrich data. Additionally, most surveys were conducted by internet (online surveys)

    It’s all about information? The Following Behaviour of Professors and PhD Students on Twitter

    In this paper we investigate the role of the academic status in the following behaviour of computer scientists on Twitter. Based on a uses and gratifications perspective, we focus on the activity of a Twitter account and the reciprocity of following relationships. We propose that the account activity addresses the users' information motive only, whereas the user's academic status relates to both the information motive and community development (as in peer networking or career planning). Variables were extracted from Twitter user data. We applied a biographical approach to correctly identify the academic status (professor versus PhD student). We calculated a 2Ă—22\times 2 MANOVA on the influence of the activity of the account and the academic status (on different groups of followers) to differentiate the influence of the information motive versus the motive for community development. Results suggest that for computer scientists Twitter is mainly an information network. However, we found significant effects in the sense of career planning, that is, the accounts of professors had even in the case of low activity a relatively high number of researcher followers -- both PhD followers as well as professor followers. Additionally, there was also some weak evidence for community development gratifications in the sense of peer-networking of professors. Overall, we conclude that the academic use of Twitter is not only about information, but also about career planning and networking

    SHOULD WE BE CONSERED ABOUT CHILDREN USE OF INTERNET? – PILOT STUDY

    Addiction of internet and problematic internet use is a growing problem in Bosnian scholars. There are many risk factors for addiction and problematic use of Internet found at school and at home. The purpose of this study is to examine scholar's habits and experiences while using the internet and to identify the most common dangers to which children are exposed during a web search. The main risks to which children are exposed while using the internet are: sexual or violent content, direct communication with persons seeking inappropriate relationships, exposure to disturbing, hostile or inappropriate messages, and the isolation of the child due to too frequent and prolonged use of the internet. The study was conducted on a sample of 1,941 scholars from fifth to eight grades in Sarajevo. Problematic use of internet is common among scholars in Sarajevo. Serious risk factors are found at home and at school. The results show that scholars of different ages differ in terms of their use of the internet, owning a Facebook profile, frequency and purposes of internet use, as well as releasing personal information on the internet, confronting pornographic content and internet addiction. Researchers did not find a statistically significant difference between scholars of different ages in experiencing violence on the internet. According to the search results, children whose parents did not pay enough attention to the activities of their children on the internet are more frequently confronted with pornographic content and are more likely to experience violence on the internet and show more signs of internet addiction. Effective measures are needed to prevent the spread of this problem
