Linearly bounded infinite graphs
Linearly bounded Turing machines have been mainly studied as acceptors for
context-sensitive languages. We define a natural class of infinite automata
representing their observable computational behavior, called linearly bounded
graphs. These automata naturally accept the same languages as the linearly
bounded machines defining them. We present some of their structural properties
as well as alternative characterizations in terms of rewriting systems and
context-sensitive transductions. Finally, we compare these graphs to rational
graphs, which are another class of automata accepting the context-sensitive
languages, and prove that in the bounded-degree case, rational graphs are a
strict sub-class of linearly bounded graphs
Analyzing Timed Systems Using Tree Automata
Timed systems, such as timed automata, are usually analyzed using their
operational semantics on timed words. The classical region abstraction for
timed automata reduces them to (untimed) finite state automata with the same
time-abstract properties, such as state reachability. We propose a new
technique to analyze such timed systems using finite tree automata instead of
finite word automata. The main idea is to consider timed behaviors as graphs
with matching edges capturing timing constraints. When a family of graphs has
bounded tree-width, they can be interpreted in trees and MSO-definable
properties of such graphs can be checked using tree automata. The technique is
quite general and applies to many timed systems. In this paper, as an example,
we develop the technique on timed pushdown systems, which have recently
received considerable attention. Further, we also demonstrate how we can use it
on timed automata and timed multi-stack pushdown systems (with boundedness
restrictions)
Outer-totalistic cellular automata on graphs
We present an intuitive formalism for implementing cellular automata on
arbitrary topologies. By that means, we identify a symmetry operation in the
class of elementary cellular automata. Moreover, we determine the subset of
topologically sensitive elementary cellular automata and find that the overall
number of complex patterns decreases under increasing neighborhood size in
regular graphs. As exemplary applications, we apply the formalism to complex
networks and compare the potential of scale-free graphs and metabolic networks

Randomized Cellular Automata
We define and study a few properties of a class of random automata networks.
While regular finite one-dimensional cellular automata are defined on periodic
lattices, these automata networks, called randomized cellular automata, are
defined on random directed graphs with constant out-degrees and evolve
according to cellular automaton rules. For some families of rules, a few
typical a priori unexpected results are presented.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
Causal graph dynamics
We extend the theory of Cellular Automata to arbitrary, time-varying graphs.
In other words we formalize, and prove theorems about, the intuitive idea of a
labelled graph which evolves in time - but under the natural constraint that
information can only ever be transmitted at a bounded speed, with respect to
the distance given by the graph. The notion of translation-invariance is also
generalized. The definition we provide for these "causal graph dynamics" is
simple and axiomatic. The theorems we provide also show that it is robust. For
instance, causal graph dynamics are stable under composition and under
restriction to radius one. In the finite case some fundamental facts of
Cellular Automata theory carry through: causal graph dynamics admit a
characterization as continuous functions, and they are stable under inversion.
The provided examples suggest a wide range of applications of this mathematical
object, from complex systems science to theoretical physics. KEYWORDS:

On the Path-Width of Integer Linear Programming
We consider the feasibility problem of integer linear programming (ILP). We
show that solutions of any ILP instance can be naturally represented by an
FO-definable class of graphs. For each solution there may be many graphs
representing it. However, one of these graphs is of path-width at most 2n,
where n is the number of variables in the instance. Since FO is decidable on
graphs of bounded path- width, we obtain an alternative decidability result for
ILP. The technique we use underlines a common principle to prove decidability
which has previously been employed for automata with auxiliary storage. We also
