    Combination of Annealing Particle Filter and Belief Propagation for 3D Upper Body Tracking

    3D upper body pose estimation is a topic greatly studied by the computer vision society because it is useful in a great number of applications, mainly for human robots interactions including communications with companion robots. However there is a challenging problem: the complexity of classical algorithms that increases exponentially with the dimension of the vectorsā€™ state becomes too difficult to handle. To tackle this problem, we propose a new approach that combines several annealing particle filters defined independently for each limb and belief propagation method to add geometrical constraints between individual filters. Experimental results on a real human gestures sequence will show that this combined approach leads to reliable results

    Cyber-Physical Power System (CPPS): A Review on Modelling, Simulation, and Analysis with Cyber Security Applications

    Cyber-Physical System (CPS) is a new kind of digital technology that increases its attention across academia, government, and industry sectors and covers a wide range of applications like agriculture, energy, medical, transportation, etc. The traditional power systems with physical equipment as a core element are more integrated with information and communication technology, which evolves into the Cyber-Physical Power System (CPPS). The CPPS consists of a physical system tightly integrated with cyber systems (control, computing, and communication functions) and allows the two-way flows of electricity and information for enabling smart grid technologies. Even though the digital technologies monitoring and controlling the electric power grid more efficiently and reliably, the power grid is vulnerable to cybersecurity risk and involves the complex interdependency between cyber and physical systems. Analyzing and resolving the problems in CPPS needs the modelling methods and systematic investigation of a complex interaction between cyber and physical systems. The conventional way of modelling, simulation, and analysis involves the separation of physical domain and cyber domain, which is not suitable for the modern CPPS. Therefore, an integrated framework needed to analyze the practical scenario of the unification of physical and cyber systems. A comprehensive review of different modelling, simulation, and analysis methods and different types of cyber-attacks, cybersecurity measures for modern CPPS is explored in this paper. A review of different types of cyber-attack detection and mitigation control schemes for the practical power system is presented in this paper.     Adaptive heterogeneous parallelism for semi-empirical lattice dynamics in computational materials science.

    With the variability in performance of the multitude of parallel environments available today, the conceptual overhead created by the need to anticipate runtime information to make design-time decisions has become overwhelming. Performance-critical applications and libraries carry implicit assumptions based on incidental metrics that are not portable to emerging computational platforms or even alternative contemporary architectures. Furthermore, the significance of runtime concerns such as makespan, energy efficiency and fault tolerance depends on the situational context. This thesis presents a case study in the application of both Mattsons prescriptive pattern-oriented approach and the more principled structured parallelism formalism to the computational simulation of inelastic neutron scattering spectra on hybrid CPU/GPU platforms. The original ad hoc implementation as well as new patternbased and structured implementations are evaluated for relative performance and scalability. Two new structural abstractions are introduced to facilitate adaptation by lazy optimisation and runtime feedback. A deferred-choice abstraction represents a unified space of alternative structural program variants, allowing static adaptation through model-specific exhaustive calibration with regards to the extrafunctional concerns of runtime, average instantaneous power and total energy usage. Instrumented queues serve as mechanism for structural composition and provide a representation of extrafunctional state that allows realisation of a market-based decentralised coordination heuristic for competitive resource allocation and the Lyapunov drift algorithm for cooperative scheduling

    Combining SOA and BPM Technologies for Cross-System Process Automation

    This paper summarizes the results of an industry case study that introduced a cross-system business process automation solution based on a combination of SOA and BPM standard technologies (i.e., BPMN, BPEL, WSDL). Besides discussing major weaknesses of the existing, custom-built, solution and comparing them against experiences with the developed prototype, the paper presents a course of action for transforming the current solution into the proposed solution. This includes a general approach, consisting of four distinct steps, as well as specific action items that are to be performed for every step.     Interactive optimisation for high-lift design.

    Interactivity always involves two entities; one of them by default is a human user. The specialised subject of human factors is introduced in the context of computational aerodynamics and optimisation, specifically a high-lift aerofoil. The trial and error nature of a design process hinges on designerā€™s knowledge, skill and intuition. A basic, important assumption of a man-machine system is that in solving a problem, there are some steps in which the computer has an advantageous edge while in other steps a human has dominance. Computational technologies are now an indispensable part of aerospace technology; algorithms involving significant user interaction, either during the process of generating solutions or as a component of post-optimisation evaluation where human decision making is involved are increasingly becoming popular, multi-objective particle swarm is one such optimiser. Several design optimisation problems in engineering are by nature multi-objective; the interest of a designer lies in simultaneous optimisation against two or more objectives which are usually in conļ¬‚ict. Interactive optimisation allows the designer to understand trade-offs between various objectives, and is generally used as a tool for decision making. The solution to a multi-objective problem, one where betterment in one objective occurs over the deterioration of at least one other objective is called a Pareto set. There are multiple solutions to a problem and multiple betterment ideas to an already existing design. The final responsibility of identifying an optimal solution or idea rests on the design engineers and decision making is done based on quantitative metrics, displayed as numbers or graphs. However, visualisation, ergonomics and human factors influence and impact this decision making process. A visual, graphical depiction of the Pareto front is oftentimes used as a design aid tool for purposes of decision making with chances of errors and fallacies fundamentally existing in engineering design. An effective visualisation tool beneļ¬ts complex engineering analyses by providing the decision-maker with a good imagery of the most important information. Two high-lift aerofoil data-sets have been used as test-case examples; a multi-element solver, an optimiser based on swarm intelligence technique, and visual techniques which include parallel co-ordinates, heat map, scatter plot, self-organising map and radial coordinate visualisation comprise the module. Factors that affect optima and various evaluation criteria have been studied in light of the human user. This research enquires into interactive optimisation by adapting three interactive approaches: information trade-off, reference point and classification, and investigates selected visualisation techniques which act as chief aids in the context of high-lift design trade studies. Human-in-the-loop engineering, man-machine interaction & interface along with influencing factors, reliability, validation and verification in the presence of design uncertainty are considered. The research structure, choice of optimiser and visual aids adapted in this work are influenced by and streamlined to fit with the parallel on-going development work on Airbusā€™ Python based tool. Results, analysis, together with literature survey are presented in this report. The words human, user, engineer, aerodynamicist, designer, analyst and decision-maker/ DM are synonymous, and are used interchangeably in this research. In a virtual engineering setting, for an efficient interactive optimisation task, a suitable visualisation tool is a crucial prerequisite.     Macroscopic Traļ¬ƒc Model Validation of Large Networks and the Introduction of a Gradient Based Solver

    Traļ¬ƒc models are important for the evaluation of various Intelligent Transport Systems and the development of new traļ¬ƒc infrastructure. In order for this to be done accurately and with conļ¬dence the correct parameter values of the model must be identiļ¬ed. The focus of this thesis is the identiļ¬cation and conļ¬rmation of these parameters, which is model validation. Validation is performed on two diļ¬€erent models; the ļ¬rst-order CTM and the second-order METANET model. The CTM is validated for two UK sites of 7.8 and 21.9 km and METANET for the same two sites using a variety of meta-heuristic algorithms. This is done using a newly developed method to allow for the optimisation method to determine the number of parameters to be used and the spatial extent of their application. This allows for the removal of expert engineering knowledge and ad-hoc decomposition of networks. This thesis also develops a methodology by use of Automatic Diļ¬€erentiation to allow gradient based optimisation to be used. This approach successfully validated the METANET model for the 21.9 km site and also a large network surrounding the city of Manchester of 186.9 km. This proves that gradient based optimisation can be used for the macroscopic traļ¬ƒc model validation problem. In fact the performance of the developed gradient method is superior to the meta-heuristics tested for the same sites. The methodology deļ¬ned also allows for more data to be obtained from the model such as its Jacobian and the sensitivity of the objective function being used relative to the individual parameters. Space-Time contour plots of this newly acquired data show structures and shock waves that are not visible in the mean speed contour diagrams
