An instrument for assessing primary students' knowledge of information graphics in mathematics
Information graphics have become increasingly important in representing, organising and analysing information in a technological age. In classroom contexts, information graphics are typically associated with graphs, maps and number lines. However, all students need to become competent with the broad range of graphics that they will encounter in mathematical situations. This paper provides a rationale for creating a test to measure students’ knowledge of graphics. This instrument can be used in mass testing and individual (in-depth) situations. Our analysis of the utility of this instrument informs policy and practice. The results provide an appreciation of the relative difficulty of different information graphics; and provide the capacity to benchmark information about students’ knowledge of graphics. The implications for practice include the need to support the development of students’ knowledge of graphics, the existence of gender differences, the role of cross-curriculum applications in learning about graphics, and the need to explicate the links among graphics
Parsing with CYK over Distributed Representations
Syntactic parsing is a key task in natural language processing. This task has
been dominated by symbolic, grammar-based parsers. Neural networks, with their
distributed representations, are challenging these methods. In this article we
show that existing symbolic parsing algorithms can cross the border and be
entirely formulated over distributed representations. To this end we introduce
a version of the traditional Cocke-Younger-Kasami (CYK) algorithm, called
D-CYK, which is entirely defined over distributed representations. Our D-CYK
uses matrix multiplication on real number matrices of size independent of the
length of the input string. These operations are compatible with traditional
neural networks. Experiments show that our D-CYK approximates the original CYK
algorithm. By showing that CYK can be entirely performed on distributed
representations, we open the way to the definition of recurrent layers of

On the role of domain ontologies in the design of domain-specific visual modeling langages
Domain-Specific Visual Modeling Languages should provide notations and abstractions that suitably support problem solving in well-defined application domains. From their user’s perspective, the language’s modeling primitives must be intuitive and expressive enough in capturing all intended aspects of domain conceptualizations. Over the years formal and explicit representations of domain conceptualizations have been developed as domain ontologies. In this paper, we show how the design of these languages can benefit from conceptual tools developed by the ontology engineering community
Towards rule-based visual programming of generic visual systems
This paper illustrates how the diagram programming language DiaPlan can be
used to program visual systems. DiaPlan is a visual rule-based language that is
founded on the computational model of graph transformation. The language
supports object-oriented programming since its graphs are hierarchically
structured. Typing allows the shape of these graphs to be specified recursively
in order to increase program security. Thanks to its genericity, DiaPlan allows
to implement systems that represent and manipulate data in arbitrary diagram
notations. The environment for the language exploits the diagram editor
generator DiaGen for providing genericity, and for implementing its user

Engineering polymer informatics: Towards the computer-aided design of polymers
The computer-aided design of polymers is one of the holy grails of modern chemical
informatics and of significant interest for a number of communities in polymer
science. The paper outlines a vision for the in silico design of polymers and presents
an information model for polymers based on modern semantic web technologies, thus
laying the foundations for achieving the vision
