    Probabilistic mathematical formula recognition using a 2D context-free graph grammar

    We present a probabilistic framework for the mathematical expression recognition problem. The developed system is flexible in that its grammar can be extended easily thanks to its graph grammar which eliminates the need for specifying rule precedence. It is also optimal in the sense that all possible interpretations of the expressions are expanded without making early commitments or hard decisions. In this paper, we give an overview of the whole system and describe in detail the graph grammar and the parsing process used in the system, along with some preliminary results on character, structure and expression recognition performances

    Multi-experts for touching digit string recognition

    84.6 % of touching digit strings have only two digits touching, 12.3 % have three digits touching, and 3.1% have more than three digits touching. We present a multiexperts approach to recognize touching digit pairs (TDP) and touching digit triples (TDT). We combine holistic and traditional segmentation methods. 25,686 TDP training samples and 2778 TDP testing samples collected from USPS mail are used in our experiment. Holistic method outperforms the traditional segmentation based methods. The multi-experts combination has the best performance, a correct rate of 91.1 % on TDP. 1

    Deep Learning Based Models for Offline Gurmukhi Handwritten Character and Numeral Recognition

    Over the last few years, several researchers have worked on handwritten character recognition and have proposed various techniques to improve the performance of Indic and non-Indic scripts recognition. Here, a Deep Convolutional Neural Network has been proposed that learns deep features for offline Gurmukhi handwritten character and numeral recognition (HCNR). The proposed network works efficiently for training as well as testing and exhibits a good recognition performance. Two primary datasets comprising of offline handwritten Gurmukhi characters and Gurmukhi numerals have been employed in the present work. The testing accuracies achieved using the proposed network is 98.5% for characters and 98.6% for numerals

    Math Search for the Masses: Multimodal Search Interfaces and Appearance-Based Retrieval

    We summarize math search engines and search interfaces produced by the Document and Pattern Recognition Lab in recent years, and in particular the min math search interface and the Tangent search engine. Source code for both systems are publicly available. "The Masses" refers to our emphasis on creating systems for mathematical non-experts, who may be looking to define unfamiliar notation, or browse documents based on the visual appearance of formulae rather than their mathematical semantics.Comment: Paper for Invited Talk at 2015 Conference on Intelligent Computer Mathematics (July, Washington DC
