A survey on fault diagnosis in wireless sensor networks
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) often consist of hundreds of sensor nodes that may be deployed in relatively
harsh and complex environments. In views of hardware cost, sensor nodes always adopt relatively cheap chips, which makes these nodes become error-prone or faulty in the course of their operation. Natural factors and electromagnetic interference could also influence the performance of the WSNs. When sensor nodes become faulty, they may have died which means they cannot communicate with other members in the wireless network, they may be still alive but produce incorrect data, they may be unstable jumping between normal state and faulty state. To improve data quality, shorten response time, strengthen network security, and prolong network lifespan, many studies have focused on fault diagnosis. This survey paper classifies fault diagnosis methods in recent five years into three categories based on decision centers and key attributes of employed algorithms: centralized approaches, distributed approaches, and hybrid approaches. As all these studies have specific goals and limitations, this paper tries to compare them, lists their merits and limits, and propose potential research directions based on established methods and theories
Graph Signal Processing: Overview, Challenges and Applications
Research in Graph Signal Processing (GSP) aims to develop tools for
processing data defined on irregular graph domains. In this paper we first
provide an overview of core ideas in GSP and their connection to conventional
digital signal processing. We then summarize recent developments in developing
basic GSP tools, including methods for sampling, filtering or graph learning.
Next, we review progress in several application areas using GSP, including
processing and analysis of sensor network data, biological data, and
applications to image processing and machine learning. We finish by providing a
brief historical perspective to highlight how concepts recently developed in
GSP build on top of prior research in other areas.Comment: To appear, Proceedings of the IEE
Internet of Underwater Things and Big Marine Data Analytics -- A Comprehensive Survey
The Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is an emerging communication
ecosystem developed for connecting underwater objects in maritime and
underwater environments. The IoUT technology is intricately linked with
intelligent boats and ships, smart shores and oceans, automatic marine
transportations, positioning and navigation, underwater exploration, disaster
prediction and prevention, as well as with intelligent monitoring and security.
The IoUT has an influence at various scales ranging from a small scientific
observatory, to a midsized harbor, and to covering global oceanic trade. The
network architecture of IoUT is intrinsically heterogeneous and should be
sufficiently resilient to operate in harsh environments. This creates major
challenges in terms of underwater communications, whilst relying on limited
energy resources. Additionally, the volume, velocity, and variety of data
produced by sensors, hydrophones, and cameras in IoUT is enormous, giving rise
to the concept of Big Marine Data (BMD), which has its own processing
challenges. Hence, conventional data processing techniques will falter, and
bespoke Machine Learning (ML) solutions have to be employed for automatically
learning the specific BMD behavior and features facilitating knowledge
extraction and decision support. The motivation of this paper is to
comprehensively survey the IoUT, BMD, and their synthesis. It also aims for
exploring the nexus of BMD with ML. We set out from underwater data collection
and then discuss the family of IoUT data communication techniques with an
emphasis on the state-of-the-art research challenges. We then review the suite
of ML solutions suitable for BMD handling and analytics. We treat the subject
deductively from an educational perspective, critically appraising the material
surveyed.Comment: 54 pages, 11 figures, 19 tables, IEEE Communications Surveys &

Rapid Recovery of Program Execution Under Power Failures for Embedded Systems with NVM
After power is switched on, recovering the interrupted program from the
initial state can cause negative impact. Some programs are even unrecoverable.
To rapid recovery of program execution under power failures, the execution
states of checkpoints are backed up by NVM under power failures for embedded
systems with NVM. However, frequent checkpoints will shorten the lifetime of
the NVM and incur significant write overhead. In this paper, the technique of
checkpoint setting triggered by function calls is proposed to reduce the write
on NVM. The evaluation results show an average of 99.8% and 80.5$% reduction on
NVM backup size for stack backup, compared to the log-based method and
step-based method. In order to better achieve this, we also propose
pseudo-function calls to increase backup points to reduce recovery costs, and
exponential incremental call-based backup methods to reduce backup costs in the
loop. To further avoid the content on NVM is cluttered and out of NVM, a method
to clean the contents on the NVM that are useless for restoration is proposed.
Based on aforementioned problems and techniques, the recovery technology is
proposed, and the case is used to analyze how to recover rapidly under
different power failures.Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication to Microprocessors and

Kablosuz sensör ağlarinda yönlü antenlerle enerji̇ veri̇mli̇ yönlendi̇rme
Without measurements, sustainable development effort can not progress in the right direction. Wireless sensor networks are vital for monitoring in real time and making accurate measurements for such an endeavor. However small energy storage in the sensors can become a bottleneck if the wireless sensor network is not optimized at the hardware and software level. Directional antennas are such optimization technologies at the hardware level. They have advantages over the omnidirectional antennas, such as high gain, less interference, longer transmission range, and less power consumption. In wireless sensor networks, most of the energy is consumed for communication. Considering the limited energy in small scale batteries of the sensors, energy efficient (aware) routing, is one of the most important software optimization techniques. The main goal of the technique is to improve the lifetime of the wireless sensor networks. In the light of these observations, it is desirable to do a coupled design of directional antennas with network software, for fully exploiting the advantages offered by directional antenna technology. In this thesis, the possibilities of doing such integrated design are surveyed and improvements are suggested. The design of the proposed microstrip patch antenna array is discussed and the performance characteristics are assessed through simulations. In the benchmarks, the proposed routing method showed improvements in energy usage compared to the existing approaches.Ölçümler olmadan sürdürülebilir kalkınma çabaları doğru yönde ilerleyemez. - Master of Scienc
Energy-aware distributed routing algorithm to tolerate network failure in wireless sensor networks
Wireless Sensor Networks are prone to link/node failures due to various environmental hazards such as interference and internal faults in deployed sensor nodes. Such failures can result in a disconnection in part of the network and the sensed data being unable to obtain a route to the sink(s), i.e. a network failure. Network failures potentially degrade the Quality of Service (QoS) of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). It is very difficult to monitor network failures using a manual operator in a harsh or hostile environment. In such environments, communication links can easy fail because of node unequal energy depletion and hardware failure or invasion. Thus it is desirable that deployed sensor nodes are capable of overcoming network failures. In this paper, we consider the problem of tolerating network failures seen by deployed sensor nodes in a WSN. We first propose a novel clustering algorithm for WSNs, termed Distributed Energy Efficient Heterogeneous Clustering (DEEHC) that selects cluster heads according to the residual energy of deployed sensor nodes with the aid of a secondary timer. During the clustering phase, each sensor node finds k-vertex disjoint paths to cluster heads depending on the energy level of its neighbor sensor nodes. We then present a k-Vertex Disjoint Path Routing (kVDPR) algorithm where each cluster head finds k-vertex disjoint paths to the base station and relays their aggregate data to the base station. Furthermore, we also propose a novel Route Maintenance Mechanism (RMM) that can repair k-vertex disjoint paths throughout the monitoring session. The resulting WSNs become tolerant to k-1 failures in the worst case. The proposed scheme has been extensively tested using various network scenarios and compared to the existing state of the art approaches to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme
Energy-Sustainable IoT Connectivity: Vision, Technological Enablers, Challenges, and Future Directions
Technology solutions must effectively balance economic growth, social equity,
and environmental integrity to achieve a sustainable society. Notably, although
the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm constitutes a key sustainability enabler,
critical issues such as the increasing maintenance operations, energy
consumption, and manufacturing/disposal of IoT devices have long-term negative
economic, societal, and environmental impacts and must be efficiently
addressed. This calls for self-sustainable IoT ecosystems requiring minimal
external resources and intervention, effectively utilizing renewable energy
sources, and recycling materials whenever possible, thus encompassing energy
sustainability. In this work, we focus on energy-sustainable IoT during the
operation phase, although our discussions sometimes extend to other
sustainability aspects and IoT lifecycle phases. Specifically, we provide a
fresh look at energy-sustainable IoT and identify energy provision, transfer,
and energy efficiency as the three main energy-related processes whose
harmonious coexistence pushes toward realizing self-sustainable IoT systems.
Their main related technologies, recent advances, challenges, and research
directions are also discussed. Moreover, we overview relevant performance
metrics to assess the energy-sustainability potential of a certain technique,
technology, device, or network and list some target values for the next
generation of wireless systems. Overall, this paper offers insights that are
valuable for advancing sustainability goals for present and future generations.Comment: 25 figures, 12 tables, submitted to IEEE Open Journal of the

A Survey on Energy Optimization Techniques in UAV-Based Cellular Networks: From Conventional to Machine Learning Approaches
Wireless communication networks have been witnessing an unprecedented demand
due to the increasing number of connected devices and emerging bandwidth-hungry
applications. Albeit many competent technologies for capacity enhancement
purposes, such as millimeter wave communications and network densification,
there is still room and need for further capacity enhancement in wireless
communication networks, especially for the cases of unusual people gatherings,
such as sport competitions, musical concerts, etc. Unmanned aerial vehicles
(UAVs) have been identified as one of the promising options to enhance the
capacity due to their easy implementation, pop up fashion operation, and
cost-effective nature. The main idea is to deploy base stations on UAVs and
operate them as flying base stations, thereby bringing additional capacity to
where it is needed. However, because the UAVs mostly have limited energy
storage, their energy consumption must be optimized to increase flight time. In
this survey, we investigate different energy optimization techniques with a
top-level classification in terms of the optimization algorithm employed;
conventional and machine learning (ML). Such classification helps understand
the state of the art and the current trend in terms of methodology. In this
regard, various optimization techniques are identified from the related
literature, and they are presented under the above mentioned classes of
employed optimization methods. In addition, for the purpose of completeness, we
include a brief tutorial on the optimization methods and power supply and
charging mechanisms of UAVs. Moreover, novel concepts, such as reflective
intelligent surfaces and landing spot optimization, are also covered to capture
the latest trend in the literature.Comment: 41 pages, 5 Figures, 6 Tables. Submitted to Open Journal of
