    Mobile ad hoc networks in transportation data collection and dissemination

    The field of transportation is rapidly changing with new opportunities for systems solutions and emerging technologies. The global economic impact of congestion and accidents are significant. Improved means are needed to solve them. Combined with the increasing numbers of vehicles on the road, the net economic impact is measured in the many billions of dollars. Promising methodologies explored in this thesis include the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET). Interconnecting vehicles using Dedicated Short Range Communication technology (DSRC) brings many benefits. Integrating DSRC into roadway vehicles offers the promise of reducing the problems of congestion and accidents; however, it comes with risks such as loss of connectivity due to power outages as well as controlling and managing loading in such networks. Energy consumption of vehicle communication equipment is a crucial factor in high availability sensor networks. Sending critical emergency messaged through linked vehicles requires that there always be energy and communication reserves. Two algorithms are described. The first controls energy consumption to guarantee an energy reserve for sending alert signals. The second exploits Long Term Evolution (LTE) to guarantee a reliable communication path

    Simulation of basic multi-hop broadcast techniques in vehicular Ad-Hoc networks using veins simulator

    Research of Broadcast Techniques in Vehicular Ad-Hoc networks using the VEINS simulatorThis project presents to the reader an incursion into the world of smart cities and vehicles, intelligent transport systems, and vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). They are conceptually analyzed, studied in terms of requirements, framework, architecture, applications and standardization. The main objective of this project is the simulation of basic techniques of message dissemination in VANETs, this project shows a brief description of broadcast dissemination techniques. Also, it is necessary to analyze simulation of VANETs. For this reason, it presents a brief description of mobility generators, network simulators and VANETs simulators paying attention to the open source ones. The main focus is set on the VEINS simulation framework, due to its high performance results and a bidirectional coupling between the network and the traffic simulators. From that point, the project is aimed at analyzing the basic paradigms of VEINS components (OMNeT++, SUMO and the TraCI module) and providing a study on their features. Three techniques are simulated (Flooding, Counter and Probability schemes) in two different scenarios (urban and highway), the simulation results are shown focused on the amount of retransmitting nodes, percentage of reached nodes, amount of packets sent, average packet delay, and percentage of packets received. Finally, a detailed manual is presented to the reader. This manual shows how to install the VEINS simulator and its components in both Windows and Linux systems.     Communications, whatever its type, is a pillar of our modern society. More specifically, communications by visible light, that show numerous advantages, from electromagnetic spectral efficiency and regulation freedom to energy saving (since it combine illumination and communication). As such, the automotive world is interested in this technology, in particularly, its application into the Intelligent Transport System (ITS). The objective of this work relies on the study and development of a demonstrator able to support VLC communication means in V2V (Vehicle to Vehicle) scenario, making use of the LED luminaries already implemented in nowadays cars. Since the outdoor implementation is one of the requirements, reception based in OCC (Optical Camera Communication) is a viable solution in this conditions. Also the signal processing/decoding is performed by a CNN (Convolutional Neural Network), this type of algorithm shows a huge decoding flexibility and resilience, which benefits the transmission system performance. All the project was done in collaboration with the integrated circuits systems group of Instituto de Telecomunicações de Aveiro and Exatronic Lda company, based in Aveiro and specialized in innovation and investigation (I+I), engineering and manufacturing of electronics.As comunicações, qualquer que seja o seu tipo, mostram-se como um pilar fundamental para a sociedade. Especificamente as comunicações por luz visível, que apresentam inúmeras vantagens, desde a eficiência espectral e mais liberdade de regulamentação, até à energética pois alia duas caracteristicas distintas (iluminação e comunicação) numa só. Como tal, o mundo automóvel apresenta-se como um dos posíveis interessados na aplicação desta tecnologia, mais propriamente a aplicação como parte integrante do sistema inteligente de transportes (ITS). Este trabalho tem como objectivo o estudo e desenvolvimento de um demonstrador capaz de estabelecer um link de comunicação V2V (Vehicle to vehicle) por meio da modulação da luz visivel emitida pelas iluminárias LED já equipadas actualmente nos veículos. Sendo a implementação exterior um dos requerimentos deste sistema, a rececção através de OCC (Optical Camera Communication) mostra-se assim uma solução viável. Assim como o processamento do sinal recebido, que é efectuado por meio de CNNs (Convolutional Neural Networks), que mostram flexibilidade e resiliência, o que benefecia a capacidade do sistema de transmissão.     Radio resource management for V2X in cellular systems

    The thesis focuses on the provision of cellular vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, which have attracted great interest for 5G due to the potential of improving traffic safety and enabling new services related to intelligent transportation systems. These types of services have strict requirements on reliability, access availability, and end-to-end (E2E) latency. V2X requires advanced network management techniques that must be developed based on the characteristics of the networks and traffic requirements. The integration of the Sidelink (SL), which enables the direct communication between vehicles (i.e., vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V)) without passing through the base station into cellular networks is a promising solution for enhancing the performance of V2X in cellular systems. In this thesis, we addressed some of the challenges arising from the integration of V2V communication in cellular systems and validated the potential of this technology by providing appropriate resource management solutions. Our main contributions have been in the context of radio access network slicing, mode selection, and radio resource allocation mechanisms. With regard to the first research direction that focuses on the RAN slicing management, a novel strategy based on offline Q-learning and softmax decision-making has been proposed as an enhanced solution to determine the adequate split of resources between a slice for eMBB communications and a slice for V2X. Then, starting from the outcome of the off-line Q-learning algorithm, a low-complexity heuristic strategy has been proposed to achieve further improvements in the use of resources. The proposed solution has been compared against proportional and fixed reference schemes. The extensive performance assessment have revealed the ability of the proposed algorithms to improve network performance compared to the reference schemes, especially in terms of resource utilization, throughput, latency and outage probability. Regarding the second research direction that focuses on the mode selection, two different mode selection solutions referred to as MSSB and MS-RBRS strategies have been proposed for V2V communication over a cellular network. The MSSB strategy decides when it is appropriate to use one or the other mode, i.e. sidelink or cellular, for the involved vehicles, taking into account the quality of the links between V2V users, the available resources, and the network traffic load situation. Moreover, the MS-RBRS strategy not only selects the appropriate mode of operation but also decides efficiently the amount of resources needed by V2V links in each mode and allows reusing RBs between different SL users while guaranteeing the minimum signal to interference requirements. The conducted simulations have revealed that the MS-RBRS and MSSB strategies are beneficial in terms of throughput, radio resource utilization, outage probability and latency under different offered loads comparing to the reference scheme. Last, we have focused on the resource allocation problem including jointly mode selection and radio resource scheduling. For the mode selection, a novel mode selection has been presented to decide when it is appropriate to select sidelink mode and use a distributed approach for radio resource allocation or cellular mode and use a centralized radio resource allocation. It takes into account three aspects: the quality of the links between V2V users, the available resources, and the latency. As for the radio resource allocation, the proposed approach includes a distributed radio resource allocation for sidelink mode and a centralized radio resource allocation for cellular mode. The proposed strategy supports dynamic assignments by allowing transmission over mini-slots. A simulation-based analysis has shown that the proposed strategies improved the network performance in terms of latency of V2V services, packet success rate and resource utilization under different network loads.La tesis se centra en la provisión de comunicaciones para vehículos sistemas celulares (V2X: Vehicle to Everything), que han atraído un gran interés en el contexto de 5G debido a su potencial de mejorar la seguridad del tráfico y habilitar nuevos servicios relacionados con los sistemas inteligentes de transporte. Estos tipos de servicios tienen requisitos estrictos en términos fiabilidad, disponibilidad de acceso y latencia de extremo a extremo (E2E). Para ello, V2X requiere técnicas avanzadas de gestión de red que deben desarrollarse en función de las características de las redes y los requisitos de tráfico. La integración del Sidelink (SL), que permite la comunicación directa entre vehículos (es decir, vehículo a vehículo (V2V)) sin pasar por la estación base de las redes celulares, es una solución prometedora para mejorar el rendimiento de V2X en el sistema celular. En esta tesis, abordamos algunos de los desafíos derivados de la integración de la comunicación V2V en los sistemas celulares y validamos el potencial de esta tecnología al proporcionar soluciones de gestión de recursos adecuadas. Nuestras principales contribuciones han sido en el contexto del denominado "slicing" de redes de acceso radio, la selección de modo y los mecanismos de asignación de recursos radio. Respecto a la primera dirección de investigación que se centra en la gestión del RAN slicing, se ha propuesto una estrategia novedosa basada en Q-learning y toma de decisiones softmax como una solución para determinar la división adecuada de recursos entre un slice para comunicaciones eMBB y un slice para V2X. Luego, a partir del resultado del algoritmo de Q-learning, se ha propuesto una estrategia heurística de baja complejidad para lograr mejoras adicionales en el uso de los recursos. La solución propuesta se ha comparado con esquemas de referencia proporcionales y fijos. La evaluación ha revelado la capacidad de los algoritmos propuestos para mejorar el rendimiento de la red en comparación con los esquemas de referencia, especialmente en términos de utilización de recursos, rendimiento, y latencia . Con respecto a la segunda dirección de investigación que se centra en la selección de modo, se han propuesto dos soluciones de diferentes llamadas estrategias MSSB y MS-RBRS para la comunicación V2V a través de una red celular. La estrategia MSSB decide cuándo es apropiado usar el modo SL o el modo celular, para los vehículos involucrados, teniendo en cuenta la calidad de los enlaces entre los usuarios de V2V, los recursos disponibles y la situación de carga de tráfico de la red. Además, la estrategia MS-RBRS no solo selecciona el modo de operación apropiado, sino que también decide eficientemente la cantidad de recursos que los enlaces V2V necesitan en cada modo, y permite que los RB se reutilicen entre diferentes usuarios de SL al tiempo que garantiza requisitos mínimos de señal a interferencia. Se ha presentado un análisis basado en simulación para evaluar el desempeño de las estrategias propuestas. Finalmente, nos hemos centrado en el problema conjunto de la selección de modo y la asignación de recursos de radio. Para la selección de modo, se ha presentado una nueva estrategia para decidir cuándo es apropiado seleccionar el modo SL y usar un enfoque distribuido para la asignación de recursos de radio o el modo celular y usar la asignación de recursos de radio centralizada. Tiene en cuenta tres aspectos: la calidad de los enlaces entre los usuarios de V2V, los recursos disponibles y la latencia. En términos de asignación de recursos de radio, el enfoque propuesto incluye una asignación de recursos de radio distribuida para el modo SL y una asignación de recursos de radio centralizada para el modo celular. La estrategia propuesta admite asignaciones dinámicas al permitir la transmisión a través de mini-slots. Los resultados muestran las mejoras en términos de latencia, tasa de recepción y la utilización de recursos bajo diferentes cargas de red.Postprint (published version

    From Data to Actions in Intelligent Transportation Systems: A Prescription of Functional Requirements for Model Actionability

    Advances in Data Science permeate every field of Transportation Science and Engineering, resulting in developments in the transportation sector that are data-driven. Nowadays, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) could be arguably approached as a “story” intensively producing and consuming large amounts of data. A diversity of sensing devices densely spread over the infrastructure, vehicles or the travelers’ personal devices act as sources of data flows that are eventually fed into software running on automatic devices, actuators or control systems producing, in turn, complex information flows among users, traffic managers, data analysts, traffic modeling scientists, etc. These information flows provide enormous opportunities to improve model development and decision-making. This work aims to describe how data, coming from diverse ITS sources, can be used to learn and adapt data-driven models for efficiently operating ITS assets, systems and processes; in other words, for data-based models to fully become actionable. Grounded in this described data modeling pipeline for ITS, we define the characteristics, engineering requisites and challenges intrinsic to its three compounding stages, namely, data fusion, adaptive learning and model evaluation. We deliberately generalize model learning to be adaptive, since, in the core of our paper is the firm conviction that most learners will have to adapt to the ever-changing phenomenon scenario underlying the majority of ITS applications. Finally, we provide a prospect of current research lines within Data Science that can bring notable advances to data-based ITS modeling, which will eventually bridge the gap towards the practicality and actionability of such models.This work was supported in part by the Basque Government for its funding support through the EMAITEK program (3KIA, ref.     Cooperative Traffic Control Solution for Vehicle Transition from Autonomous to Manual Mode exploiting Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) Technology

    Nowadays, automated vehicles represent a promising technology to face the stringent requirements for safety and traffic efficiency in the automotive environment. Driving responsibilities will be gradually addressed to the machine, and the role of human pilots will be progressively reduced to passengers. The interaction between passengers and the automated system will create different risks that have not been considered in the past. In particular, the transition between autonomous and manual mode is understood as a risky situation. During the transition, the driver manifests driving irregularities and loss of situation awareness that may endanger himself and other participants on the road. Hence, the vehicle transitioning needs a higher quantity of space around it to be considered safe. However, no effective solution has been developed yet. This thesis aims to design a cooperative traffic control solution that will manage the movements of the group of vehicles to increase the free space around the one transitioning. It will exploit another tool that will play a fundamental role in the future of the automotive industry: connected vehicles technology. C-V2X technology will create a medium for vehicles to exchange information and cooperate. A controller managing the cooperation between vehicles has been developed to help a smooth and safe vehicle repositioning. The controller will be positioned in a centralized computing facility and it will communicate with all the vehicles. The controller defines rules to move vehicles together and enlarge the free space around the vehicle transitioning without collisions. The rules are modeled by a spring-mass-damper system, that can be exploited to control the longitudinal behavior of automated vehicles. In particular, the spring-mass-damper system can manage smooth migration between vehicle dispositions without oscillations. A computer simulation is used to test the performance of the proposed traffic control system. The simulation environment is constituted by three main components: traffic flow, controller and communication network. It has been tested with the software VEINS, which provides interaction between a network simulator (OMNeT++) and a traffic simulator (SUMO). The traffic flow represents the interactions between vehicles. The controller analyzes the data and sends control messages to all vehicles. The communication network will share the data concerning vehicles’ position and speed and control messages. The proposed cooperative vehicle control system demonstrated to reduce the risks of the transition with the smooth motion of vehicles. The controller is able to achieve the safety requirements without reducing the level of comfortability of vehicles’ passengers

    A Communications-Oriented Perspective on Traffic Management Systems for Smart Cities: Challenges and Innovative Approaches

    The growing size of cities and increasing population mobility have determined a rapid increase in the number of vehicles on the roads, which has resulted in many challenges for road traffic management authorities in relation to traffic congestion, accidents, and air pollution. Over the recent years, researchers from both industry and academia have been focusing their efforts on exploiting the advances in sensing, communication, and dynamic adaptive technologies to make the existing road traffic management systems (TMSs) more efficient to cope with the aforementioned issues in future smart cities. However, these efforts are still insufficient to build a reliable and secure TMS that can handle the foreseeable rise of population and vehicles in smart cities. In this survey, we present an up-to-date review of the different technologies used in the different phases involved in a TMS and discuss the potential use of smart cars and social media to enable fast and more accurate traffic congestion detection and mitigation. We also provide a thorough study of the security threats that may jeopardize the efficiency of the TMS and endanger drivers' lives. Furthermore, the most significant and recent European and worldwide projects dealing with traffic congestion issues are briefly discussed to highlight their contribution to the advancement of smart transportation. Finally, we discuss some open challenges and present our own vision to develop robust TMSs for future smart cities

Les tecnologies inalàmbriques han conduït al desenvolupament de nous sistemes de comunicació y serveis multimèdia. Degut al constant creixement del mercat automobilístic juntament amb la creixent demanda de la seguretat viària ha nascut un nou concepte al camp de les comunicaciones: les xarxes entre vehicles (VANETs). A les VANETs, cada vehicle pot actuar com a router o node, establint connexions entre vehicles propers o amb infraestructura a la carretera. Les VANET estan rebent més atenció del govern i de la indústria automobilística degut a l'àmplia varietat d'aplicacions y serveis que poden oferir, tal com sistemes de seguretet viària assistència a la carretera i accès a Internet. No obstant, el disseny i l'implementació de VANETs és una àrea d'investigació àmplia i complexa tal i com podem percebre, sabent que durant els darrers anys la comunitat investigadora s'ha centrat en l'estudi d'aquestes xarxes. Bàsicament, el nostre projecte està dividit en dues parts principals: Primerament, hem dut a terme una recerca relacionada amb l'estat actual de les VANET avui en dia, amb l'objectiu d'identificar els generadors de moviment i els simuladors de xarxes més apropiats i recomenats a la literatura. En segon lloc, hem decidit utilitzar el VanetMobiSim [80], com a generador de moviment degut a la seva varietat de models de movilitat que es poden testejar, i el NS2 [63] com a simulador de xarxes per ser un dels més utilitzats per molts autors a més de la seva compatibilitat amb el VanetMobiSim. Amb l'ús d'aquestes eines, VanetMobiSim i NS2, hem dut a terme una avaluació profunda de les prestacions de les VANET en diversos escenaris reals, assignant valors diferents a paràmetres tals com el nombre de nodes, la velocitat i el model de propagació.Castellano: En los últimos años, el considerable crecimiento del sector de los servicios móviles alrededor del mundo es con certeza el mayor fenómeno en el campo de las telecomunicaciones. Las tecnologías inalámbricas han conducido al desarrollo de nuevos sistemas de comunicación y servicios multimedia. Debido al constante crecimiento del mercado automovilístico y la creciente demanda en seguridad vial ha nacido un nuevo concepto en el campo de las comunicaciones: las redes entre vehículos (VANETs). En ellas, cada vehículo actúa como router, estableciendo conexiones entre vehículos cercanos o con infraestructura en la carretera. Las VANET estan recibiendo más atención del gobierno y de la industria automovilística debido a la amplia variedad de aplicaciones y servicios que puede ofrecer, tales como sistemas de seguridad vial, asistencia en carretera y acceso a Internet. Sin embargo, el diseño e implementación de las VANET es un area de investigación amplia y compleja, tal y como podemos percibir, sabiendo que durante los últimos años la comunidad investigadora se ha centrado en el estudio de estas redes. Básicamente, nuestro proyecto está dividido en dos partes principales: Primeramente, hemos llevado a cabo una búsqueda relacionada con el estado de arte de las VANET hoy en día, con el objetivo de identificar los generadores de movimiento i los simuladores de redes más apropiados i recomendados en la literatura. Wireless technology has led to the development of new communications systems and multimedia services. Due to the continued growth of the vehicular industry and the increasing demand of road safety, a new concept in the communications field was born: vehicular networks (VANETs). In VANETs, each vehicle could act as router or node, establishing connections among nearby vehicles or with roadside infrastructure. VANETs are receiving more attention from governments and car manufacturers due to the wide variety of applications and services they can provide such as road safety systems, car assistance and Internet acces. However, designing and implementing VANETs is a complex and wide area of research as we can notice, knowing that in the last years the research and development community has focused on the study of such networks. Basically, our project is divided in two main parts: Firstly, we made a state of art related to the actual state of VANETs nowadays in order to find the most appropiate and recommended mobility generator and network simulator reported in the literature. Secondly, we decided to use VanetMobiSim [80], as a mobility generator due to its variety mobility models that could be tested, and NS2 [63] as a network simulator for being one of the most used by many authors and also due to its compatibilty with VanetMobiSim. Using these tools, VanetMobiSim and NS2, we carried out a deep performance evaluation of VANETs in several realistic scenarios, giving different values to parameters such as the number of nodes, speed and the propagation model

    Integrated Approach for Diversion Route Performance Management during Incidents

    Non-recurrent congestion is one of the critical sources of congestion on the highway. In particular, traffic incidents create congestion in unexpected times and places that travelers do not prepare for. During incidents on freeways, route diversion has been proven to be a useful tactic to mitigate non-recurrent congestion. However, the capacity constraints created by the signals on the alternative routes put limits on the diversion process since the typical time-of-day signal control cannot handle the sudden increase in the traffic on the arterials due to diversion. Thus, there is a need for proactive strategies for the management of the diversion routes performance and for coordinated freeway and arterial (CFA) operation during incidents on the freeway. Proactive strategies provide better opportunities for both the agency and the traveler to make and implement decisions to improve performance. This dissertation develops a methodology for the performance management of diversion routes through integrating freeway and arterials operation during incidents on the freeway. The methodology includes the identification of potential diversion routes for freeway incidents and the generation and implementation of special signal plans under different incident and traffic conditions. The study utilizes machine learning, data analytics, multi-resolution modeling, and multi-objective optimization for this purpose. A data analytic approach based on the long short term memory (LSTM) deep neural network method is used to predict the utilized alternative routes dynamically using incident attributes and traffic status on the freeway and travel time on both the freeway and alternative routes during the incident. Then, a combination of clustering analysis, multi- resolution modeling (MRM), and multi-objective optimization techniques are used to develop and activate special signal plans on the identified alternative routes. The developed methods use data from different sources, including connected vehicle (CV) data and high- resolution controller (HRC) data for congestion patterns identification at the critical intersections on the alternative routes and signal plans generation. The results indicate that implementing signal timing plans to better accommodate the diverted traffic can improve the performance of the diverted traffic without significantly deteriorating other movements\u27 performance at the intersection. The findings show the importance of using data from emerging sources in developing plans to improve the performance of the diversion routes and ensure CFA operation with higher effectiveness
