Detection of Features to Track Objects and Segmentation Using GrabCut for Application in Marker-less Augmented Reality
AbstractAugmented Reality applications have hovered itself over various platforms such as desktop and most recently to handheld devices such as mobile phones and tablets. Augmented Reality (AR) systems have mostly been limited to Head Worn Displays with start-ups such as Magic Leap and Occulus Rift making tremendous advancement in such AR and VR research applications facing a stiff competition with Software giant Microsoft which has recently introduced Holo Lens. AR refers to the augmentation or the conglomeration of virtual objects in the real world scenario which has a distinct but close resemblance to Virtual Reality (VR) systems which are computer simulated environments which render physical presence in imaginary world. Developers and hackers round the globe have directed their research interests in the development of AR and VR based applications especially in the domain of advertisement and gaming. Many open source libraries, SDKs and proprietary software are available worldwide for developers to make such systems. This paper describes an algorithm for an AR prototype which uses a marker less approach to track and segment out real world objects and then overlay the same on another real world scene. The algorithm was tested on Desktop. The results are comparable with other existing algorithms and outperform some of them in terms of robustness, speed, and accuracy, precision and timing analysis
Automatic recognition of fingerspelled words in British Sign Language
We investigate the problem of recognizing words from
video, fingerspelled using the British Sign Language (BSL)
fingerspelling alphabet. This is a challenging task since the
BSL alphabet involves both hands occluding each other, and
contains signs which are ambiguous from the observerâs
viewpoint. The main contributions of our work include:
(i) recognition based on hand shape alone, not requiring
motion cues; (ii) robust visual features for hand shape
recognition; (iii) scalability to large lexicon recognition
with no re-training.
We report results on a dataset of 1,000 low quality webcam
videos of 100 words. The proposed method achieves a
word recognition accuracy of 98.9%
Review of Person Re-identification Techniques
Person re-identification across different surveillance cameras with disjoint
fields of view has become one of the most interesting and challenging subjects
in the area of intelligent video surveillance. Although several methods have
been developed and proposed, certain limitations and unresolved issues remain.
In all of the existing re-identification approaches, feature vectors are
extracted from segmented still images or video frames. Different similarity or
dissimilarity measures have been applied to these vectors. Some methods have
used simple constant metrics, whereas others have utilised models to obtain
optimised metrics. Some have created models based on local colour or texture
information, and others have built models based on the gait of people. In
general, the main objective of all these approaches is to achieve a
higher-accuracy rate and lowercomputational costs. This study summarises
several developments in recent literature and discusses the various available
methods used in person re-identification. Specifically, their advantages and

Fine-grained action recognition by motion saliency and mid-level patches
Effective extraction of human body parts and operated objects participating in action is the key issue of fine-grained action recognition. However, most of the existing methods require intensive manual annotation to train the detectors of these interaction components. In this paper, we represent videos by mid-level patches to avoid the manual annotation, where each patch corresponds to an action-related interaction component. In order to capture mid-level patches more exactly and rapidly, candidate motion regions are extracted by motion saliency. Firstly, the motion regions containing interaction components are segmented by a threshold adaptively calculated according to the saliency histogram of the motion saliency map. Secondly, we introduce a mid-level patch mining algorithm for interaction component detection, with object proposal generation and mid-level patch detection. The object proposal generation algorithm is used to obtain multi-granularity object proposals inspired by the idea of the Huffman algorithm. Based on these object proposals, the mid-level patch detectors are trained by K-means clustering and SVM. Finally, we build a fine-grained action recognition model using a graph structure to describe relationships between the mid-level patches. To recognize actions, the proposed model calculates the appearance and motion features of mid-level patches and the binary motion cooperation relationships between adjacent patches in the graph. Extensive experiments on the MPII cooking database demonstrate that the proposed method gains better results on fine-grained action recognition
Carried baggage detection and recognition in video surveillance with foreground segmentation
Security cameras installed in public spaces or in private organizations continuously
record video data with the aim of detecting and preventing crime. For that reason,
video content analysis applications, either for real time (i.e. analytic) or post-event
(i.e. forensic) analysis, have gained high interest in recent years. In this thesis,
the primary focus is on two key aspects of video analysis, reliable moving object
segmentation and carried object detection & identification.
A novel moving object segmentation scheme by background subtraction is presented
in this thesis. The scheme relies on background modelling which is based
on multi-directional gradient and phase congruency. As a post processing step,
the detected foreground contours are refined by classifying the edge segments as
either belonging to the foreground or background. Further contour completion
technique by anisotropic diffusion is first introduced in this area. The proposed
method targets cast shadow removal, gradual illumination change invariance, and
closed contour extraction.
A state of the art carried object detection method is employed as a benchmark
algorithm. This method includes silhouette analysis by comparing human temporal
templates with unencumbered human models. The implementation aspects of
the algorithm are improved by automatically estimating the viewing direction of
the pedestrian and are extended by a carried luggage identification module. As
the temporal template is a frequency template and the information that it provides
is not sufficient, a colour temporal template is introduced. The standard
steps followed by the state of the art algorithm are approached from a different
extended (by colour information) perspective, resulting in more accurate carried
object segmentation.
The experiments conducted in this research show that the proposed closed
foreground segmentation technique attains all the aforementioned goals. The incremental
improvements applied to the state of the art carried object detection
algorithm revealed the full potential of the scheme. The experiments demonstrate
the ability of the proposed carried object detection algorithm to supersede the
state of the art method
