    On Throughput and Decoding Delay Performance of Instantly Decodable Network Coding

    In this paper, a comprehensive study of packet-based instantly decodable network coding (IDNC) for single-hop wireless broadcast is presented. The optimal IDNC solution in terms of throughput is proposed and its packet decoding delay performance is investigated. Lower and upper bounds on the achievable throughput and decoding delay performance of IDNC are derived and assessed through extensive simulations. Furthermore, the impact of receivers' feedback frequency on the performance of IDNC is studied and optimal IDNC solutions are proposed for scenarios where receivers' feedback is only available after and IDNC round, composed of several coded transmissions. However, since finding these IDNC optimal solutions is computational complex, we further propose simple yet efficient heuristic IDNC algorithms. The impact of system settings and parameters such as channel erasure probability, feedback frequency, and the number of receivers is also investigated and simple guidelines for practical implementations of IDNC are proposed.Comment: This is a 14-page paper submitted to IEEE/ACM Transaction on Networking. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1208.238

    Graph Spectral Image Processing

    Recent advent of graph signal processing (GSP) has spurred intensive studies of signals that live naturally on irregular data kernels described by graphs (e.g., social networks, wireless sensor networks). Though a digital image contains pixels that reside on a regularly sampled 2D grid, if one can design an appropriate underlying graph connecting pixels with weights that reflect the image structure, then one can interpret the image (or image patch) as a signal on a graph, and apply GSP tools for processing and analysis of the signal in graph spectral domain. In this article, we overview recent graph spectral techniques in GSP specifically for image / video processing.     GraphSE2^2: An Encrypted Graph Database for Privacy-Preserving Social Search

    In this paper, we propose GraphSE2^2, an encrypted graph database for online social network services to address massive data breaches. GraphSE2^2 preserves the functionality of social search, a key enabler for quality social network services, where social search queries are conducted on a large-scale social graph and meanwhile perform set and computational operations on user-generated contents. To enable efficient privacy-preserving social search, GraphSE2^2 provides an encrypted structural data model to facilitate parallel and encrypted graph data access. It is also designed to decompose complex social search queries into atomic operations and realise them via interchangeable protocols in a fast and scalable manner. We build GraphSE2^2 with various queries supported in the Facebook graph search engine and implement a full-fledged prototype.     A modified ant colony optimization algorithm for network coding resource minimization

    The paper presents a modified ant colony optimization approach for the network coding resource minimization problem. It is featured with several attractive mechanisms specially devised for solving the network coding resource minimization problem: 1) a multi-dimensional pheromone maintenance mechanism is put forward to address the issue of pheromone overlapping; 2) problem-specific heuristic information is employed to enhance the heuristic search (neighboring area search) capability; 3) a tabu-table based path construction method is devised to facilitate the construction of feasible (link-disjoint) paths from the source to each receiver; 4) a local pheromone updating rule is developed to guide ants to construct appropriate promising paths; 5) a solution reconstruction method is presented, with the aim of avoiding prematurity and improving the global search efficiency of proposed algorithm. Due to the way it works, the ant colony optimization can well exploit the global and local information of routing related problems during the solution construction phase. The simulation results on benchmark instances demonstrate that with the five extended mechanisms integrated, our algorithm outperforms a number of existing algorithms with respect to the best solutions obtained and the computational time
