The Parallel Persistent Memory Model
We consider a parallel computational model that consists of processors,
each with a fast local ephemeral memory of limited size, and sharing a large
persistent memory. The model allows for each processor to fault with bounded
probability, and possibly restart. On faulting all processor state and local
ephemeral memory are lost, but the persistent memory remains. This model is
motivated by upcoming non-volatile memories that are as fast as existing random
access memory, are accessible at the granularity of cache lines, and have the
capability of surviving power outages. It is further motivated by the
observation that in large parallel systems, failure of processors and their
caches is not unusual.
Within the model we develop a framework for developing locality efficient
parallel algorithms that are resilient to failures. There are several
challenges, including the need to recover from failures, the desire to do this
in an asynchronous setting (i.e., not blocking other processors when one
fails), and the need for synchronization primitives that are robust to
failures. We describe approaches to solve these challenges based on breaking
computations into what we call capsules, which have certain properties, and
developing a work-stealing scheduler that functions properly within the context
of failures. The scheduler guarantees a time bound of in expectation, where and are the work and
depth of the computation (in the absence of failures), is the average
number of processors available during the computation, and is the
probability that a capsule fails. Within the model and using the proposed
methods, we develop efficient algorithms for parallel sorting and other

Intel Concurrent Collections for Haskell
Intel Concurrent Collections (CnC) is a parallel programming model in which a network of steps (functions) communicate through message-passing as well as a limited form of shared memory. This paper describes a new implementation of CnC for Haskell. Compared to existing parallel programming models for Haskell, CnC occupies a useful point in the design space: pure and deterministic like Evaluation Strategies, but more explicit about granularity and the structure of the parallel computation, which affords the programmer greater control over parallel performance. We present results on 4, 8, and 32-core machines demonstrating parallel speedups over 20x on non-trivial benchmarks
Automated problem scheduling and reduction of synchronization delay effects
It is anticipated that in order to make effective use of many future high performance architectures, programs will have to exhibit at least a medium grained parallelism. A framework is presented for partitioning very sparse triangular systems of linear equations that is designed to produce favorable preformance results in a wide variety of parallel architectures. Efficient methods for solving these systems are of interest because: (1) they provide a useful model problem for use in exploring heuristics for the aggregation, mapping and scheduling of relatively fine grained computations whose data dependencies are specified by directed acrylic graphs, and (2) because such efficient methods can find direct application in the development of parallel algorithms for scientific computation. Simple expressions are derived that describe how to schedule computational work with varying degrees of granularity. The Encore Multimax was used as a hardware simulator to investigate the performance effects of using the partitioning techniques presented in shared memory architectures with varying relative synchronization costs

Computer-aided programming for multiprocessing systems
As both the number of processors and the complexity of problems to be solved increase, programming multiprocessing systems becomes more difficult and error-prone. This report discusses parallel models of computation and tools for computer-aided programming (CAP). Program development tools are necessary since programmers are not able to develop complex parallel programs efficiently. In particular, a CAP tool, named Hypertool, is described here. It performs scheduling and handles the communication primitive insertion automatically so that many errors are eliminated. It also generates the performance estimates and other program quality measures to help programmers in improving their algorithms and programs. Experiments have shown that up to a 300% performance improvement can be achieved by computer-aided programming
Towards an Adaptive Skeleton Framework for Performance Portability
The proliferation of widely available, but very different, parallel architectures
makes the ability to deliver good parallel performance
on a range of architectures, or performance portability, highly desirable.
Irregularly-parallel problems, where the number and size
of tasks is unpredictable, are particularly challenging and require
dynamic coordination.
The paper outlines a novel approach to delivering portable parallel
performance for irregularly parallel programs. The approach
combines declarative parallelism with JIT technology, dynamic
scheduling, and dynamic transformation.
We present the design of an adaptive skeleton library, with a task
graph implementation, JIT trace costing, and adaptive transformations.
We outline the architecture of the protoype adaptive skeleton
execution framework in Pycket, describing tasks, serialisation,
and the current scheduler.We report a preliminary evaluation of the
prototype framework using 4 micro-benchmarks and a small case
study on two NUMA servers (24 and 96 cores) and a small cluster
(17 hosts, 272 cores). Key results include Pycket delivering good
sequential performance e.g. almost as fast as C for some benchmarks;
good absolute speedups on all architectures (up to 120 on
128 cores for sumEuler); and that the adaptive transformations do
improve performance
Design of multimedia processor based on metric computation
Media-processing applications, such as signal processing, 2D and 3D graphics
rendering, and image compression, are the dominant workloads in many embedded
systems today. The real-time constraints of those media applications have
taxing demands on today's processor performances with low cost, low power and
reduced design delay. To satisfy those challenges, a fast and efficient
strategy consists in upgrading a low cost general purpose processor core. This
approach is based on the personalization of a general RISC processor core
according the target multimedia application requirements. Thus, if the extra
cost is justified, the general purpose processor GPP core can be enforced with
instruction level coprocessors, coarse grain dedicated hardware, ad hoc
memories or new GPP cores. In this way the final design solution is tailored to
the application requirements. The proposed approach is based on three main
steps: the first one is the analysis of the targeted application using
efficient metrics. The second step is the selection of the appropriate
architecture template according to the first step results and recommendations.
The third step is the architecture generation. This approach is experimented
using various image and video algorithms showing its feasibility

Improving parallel program performance using critical path analysis
A programming tool that performs analysis of critical paths for parallel programs has been developed. This tool determines the critical path for the program as scheduled onto a parallel computer with P processing elements, the critical path for the program expressed as a data flow graph (when maximal parallelism can be expressed), and the minimum number of processing elements (P_opt) needed to obtain maximum program speedup. Experiments were performed using several versions of a Gaussian elimination program to examine how speedup varied with changes in granularity and critical path length. These experiments showed that when the available numer of processing elements P < P_opt, increasing granularity improved program speedup more than reducing (the data flow graph's) critical path length, whereas when P â„ P_opt, increasing granularity degraded program speedup while reducing critical path length improved program speedup
