    Uncertainty Management of Intelligent Feature Selection in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are envisioned to revolutionize the paradigm of monitoring complex real-world systems at a very high resolution. However, the deployment of a large number of unattended sensor nodes in hostile environments, frequent changes of environment dynamics, and severe resource constraints pose uncertainties and limit the potential use of WSN in complex real-world applications. Although uncertainty management in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is well developed and well investigated, its implications in wireless sensor environments are inadequately addressed. This dissertation addresses uncertainty management issues of spatio-temporal patterns generated from sensor data. It provides a framework for characterizing spatio-temporal pattern in WSN. Using rough set theory and temporal reasoning a novel formalism has been developed to characterize and quantify the uncertainties in predicting spatio-temporal patterns from sensor data. This research also uncovers the trade-off among the uncertainty measures, which can be used to develop a multi-objective optimization model for real-time decision making in sensor data aggregation and samplin

    Online sketch-based image retrieval using keyshape mining of geometrical objects

    Online image retrieval has become an active information-sharing due to the massive use of the Internet. The key challenging problems are the semantic gap between the low-level visual features and high-semantic perception and interpretation, due to understating complexity of images and the hand-drawn query input representation which is not a regular input in addition to the huge amount of web images. Besides, the state-of-art research is highly desired to combine multiple types of different feature representations to close the semantic gap. This study developed a new schema to retrieve images directly from the web repository. It comprises three major phases. Firstly a new online input representation based on pixel mining to detect sketch shape features and correlate them with the semantic sketch objects meaning was designed. Secondly, training process was developed to obtain common templates using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) technique to detect common sketch template. The outcome of this step is a sketch of variety templates dictionary. Lastly, the retrieval phase matched and compared the sketch with image repository using metadata annotation to retrieve the most relevant images. The sequence of processes in this schema converts the drawn input sketch to a string form which contains the sketch object elements. Then, the string is matched with the templates dictionary to specify the sketch metadata name. This selected name will be sent to a web repository to match and retrieve the relevant images. A series of experiments was conducted to evaluate the performance of the schema against the state of the art found in literature using the same datasets comprising one million images from FlickerIm and 0.2 million images from ImageNet. There was a significant retrieval in all cases of 100% precision for the first five retrieved images whereas the state of the art only achieved 88.8%. The schema has addressed many low features obstacles to retrieve more accurate images such as imperfect sketches, rotation, transpose and scaling.     Rejection-oriented learning without complete class information

    Machine Learning is commonly used to support decision-making in numerous, diverse contexts. Its usefulness in this regard is unquestionable: there are complex systems built on the top of machine learning techniques whose descriptive and predictive capabilities go far beyond those of human beings. However, these systems still have limitations, whose analysis enable to estimate their applicability and confidence in various cases. This is interesting considering that abstention from the provision of a response is preferable to make a mistake in doing so. In the context of classification-like tasks, the indication of such inconclusive output is called rejection. The research which culminated in this thesis led to the conception, implementation and evaluation of rejection-oriented learning systems for two distinct tasks: open set recognition and data stream clustering. These system were derived from WiSARD artificial neural network, which had rejection modelling incorporated into its functioning. This text details and discuss such realizations. It also presents experimental results which allow assess the scientific and practical importance of the proposed state-of-the-art methodology.Aprendizado de Máquina é comumente usado para apoiar a tomada de decisão em numerosos e diversos contextos. Sua utilidade neste sentido é inquestionável: existem sistemas complexos baseados em técnicas de aprendizado de máquina cujas capacidades descritivas e preditivas vão muito além das dos seres humanos. Contudo, esses sistemas ainda possuem limitações, cuja análise permite estimar sua aplicabilidade e confiança em vários casos. Isto é interessante considerando que a abstenção da provisão de uma resposta é preferível a cometer um equívoco ao realizar tal ação. No contexto de classificação e tarefas similares, a indicação desse resultado inconclusivo é chamada de rejeição. A pesquisa que culminou nesta tese proporcionou a concepção, implementação e avaliação de sistemas de aprendizado orientados `a rejeição para duas tarefas distintas: reconhecimento em cenário abertos e agrupamento de dados em fluxo contínuo. Estes sistemas foram derivados da rede neural artificial WiSARD, que teve a modelagem de rejeição incorporada a seu funcionamento. Este texto detalha e discute tais realizações. The complex is composed of grey, pink and white granites all with the same mineralogical composition (quartz, orthoclase dominant, plagioclase subordinate). The white granite commonly contains tourmaline nodular segregations, Emplacement began with the pink and grey granites, followed closely by the white granite, and finally the intrusion of minor bodies (porphyritic aplite, micro-granite, aplite, pegmatite, quartz-tourmaline dykes, pyroxene dyke) . Tourmaline is abundant in the later intrusions and is sometimes accompanied by cassiterite
