The automatic construction of a glossary

    Get PDF
In this paper the term “glossary” refers to a list, in alphabetical order, of all the different words used in any text, together with a statement of how many times each word occurs in the text. The manual construction of a glossary is usually made with the aid of a card index, where one card is used to note the occurrences of each different word in the text. The procedure consists of attempts to look up each consecutive word of the text in the card index; if the word is found, its present occurrence is noted on the card; but if it is not found, a new card is made out and inserted into the index. The automatic construction of a glossary is similar in principle, but the logical rules by which the construction is made are more complicated because the store of an electronic computer, unlike a card index, is limited in size and, in general, is not large enough to contain the entire glossary of a text of average length. There are many ways of overcoming this difficulty and two of the more reasonable ones are discussed below

A glossary of building site vocabulary in the Duchy of Savoy (17th-18th century) This paper presents a glossary of technical terms used in the 17th-18th century building sites in the Duchy of Savoy. The glossary was produced using primary and secondary sources on building techniques in Piedmont, including major 19th century construction manuals. These sources were cross-referenced with ongoing studies by construction history associations. This study is part of a larger investigation on craftsmen and the organisation of building sites in the Savoy States

HTML Macros -- Easing the Construction and Maintenance of Web Texts

Authoring and maintaining large collections of Web texts is a cumbersome, error-prone and time-consuming business. Ongoing development of courseware for the High Performance Computing Consortium (HPCC) TLTP has only helped to emphasise these problems. Courseware requires the application of a coherent document layout (templates) for each page, and also the use of standard icons with a consistent functionality, in order to create a constant look and feel throughout the material. This provides the user with an environment where he or she can access new pages, and instantly recognise the format used, making the extraction of the information on the page much quicker, and less immediately confusing. This paper describes a system that was developed at UKC to provide a solution to the above problems via the introduction of HTML macros. These macros can be used to provide a standard document layout with a consistent look and feel, as well as tools to ease user navigation. The software is written in Perl, and achieves macro expansion and replacement using the Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and filtering the HTML source. Using macros in your HTML results in your document source code being shorter, more robust, and more powerful. Webs of documents can be built extremely fast and maintenance is made much simpler. Hypermedia for language learning: The FREE model at Coventry University

    Get PDF
Coventry University is pioneering the integration of hypermedia into the curriculum for the teaching of Italian language and society with the creation of a package based on Nerino Rossi's novel La neve nel bicchiere. The novel was already in use as a basic course text, and developing a hypermedia package was felt to be the ideal way of creating a more stimulating means of access to it. The procedure used in creating the package is described, as are its contents, the ways in which the students use it and the tasks they are given to perform, the feedback from the students, and its impact on their performance. The testing of the prototype has helped in creating a new cognitive model: the FREE (Fluid Role‐Exchange Environment) which functions as a fluid and interactive ‘pool’ where the three main actors, or act ants, ie. the learner, the lecturer and the computer, exchange roles. Within the FREE, students were involved in the construction and evaluation of the courseware, as well as testing the various versions of the prototype. The development and use of hypermedia inside and outside the classroom has made it possible to change both the students’ and the lecturer's attitude towards the material being learnt. However, the courseware does not seem to equip students sufficiently for essay writing, and this problem needs further investigation
