Massive MIMO for Wireless Sensing with a Coherent Multiple Access Channel
We consider the detection and estimation of a zero-mean Gaussian signal in a
wireless sensor network with a coherent multiple access channel, when the
fusion center (FC) is configured with a large number of antennas and the
wireless channels between the sensor nodes and FC experience Rayleigh fading.
For the detection problem, we study the Neyman-Pearson (NP) Detector and Energy
Detector (ED), and find optimal values for the sensor transmission gains. For
the NP detector which requires channel state information (CSI), we show that
detection performance remains asymptotically constant with the number of FC
antennas if the sensor transmit power decreases proportionally with the
increase in the number of antennas. Performance bounds show that the benefit of
multiple antennas at the FC disappears as the transmit power grows. The results
of the NP detector are also generalized to the linear minimum mean squared
error estimator. For the ED which does not require CSI, we derive optimal gains
that maximize the deflection coefficient of the detector, and we show that a
constant deflection can be asymptotically achieved if the sensor transmit power
scales as the inverse square root of the number of FC antennas. Unlike the NP
detector, for high sensor power the multi-antenna ED is observed to empirically
have significantly better performance than the single-antenna implementation. A

Optimized resource allocation in wireless systems

Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.Modern wireless systems rely to a great extent on the judicious distribution of available resources (e.g. power, bandwidth) to meet an ever increasing demand of better quality-of-service (QoS). Scarcity of these resources with time, coupled with the tremendous growth in numbers of users, network throughput, and applications, have resulted in making the problem of optimal resource allocation extremely important especially in wireless networks.
Generally, optimization problems posed in the resource allocation framework are nonconvex and thus render it difficult to find an optimal solution. Previous studies on this subject have reported only numerically cumbersome and non-tractable solutions. This dissertation attempts to exploit the hidden convexity of the resource allocation problems under some given performance criteria such as minimum mean square error (MMSE) or signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and then successfully finds tractable optimization formulations.
The first research problem deals with the optimal power allocation and sensor assignment in linear and nonlinear networks for static and dynamic target tracking. The proposed method casts power allocation as a semi-definite program (SDP) while sensor selection is solved via d.c. (difference of convex functions/sets) programming. The second problem considers optimal beam-forming and source power allocation in relay-assisted multiuser communication. This problem is further extended to include multiple-antenna systems to exploit spatial diversity in modern cellular communication by jointly optimizing source precoding and relay processing matrices. Supremacy of the proposed d.c. programming based iterative algorithm over existing methods is demonstrated via extensive simulations
Distributed Detection and Estimation in Wireless Sensor Networks
In this article we consider the problems of distributed detection and
estimation in wireless sensor networks. In the first part, we provide a general
framework aimed to show how an efficient design of a sensor network requires a
joint organization of in-network processing and communication. Then, we recall
the basic features of consensus algorithm, which is a basic tool to reach
globally optimal decisions through a distributed approach. The main part of the
paper starts addressing the distributed estimation problem. We show first an
entirely decentralized approach, where observations and estimations are
performed without the intervention of a fusion center. Then, we consider the
case where the estimation is performed at a fusion center, showing how to
allocate quantization bits and transmit powers in the links between the nodes
and the fusion center, in order to accommodate the requirement on the maximum
estimation variance, under a constraint on the global transmit power. We extend
the approach to the detection problem. Also in this case, we consider the
distributed approach, where every node can achieve a globally optimal decision,
and the case where the decision is taken at a central node. In the latter case,
we show how to allocate coding bits and transmit power in order to maximize the
detection probability, under constraints on the false alarm rate and the global
transmit power. Then, we generalize consensus algorithms illustrating a
distributed procedure that converges to the projection of the observation
vector onto a signal subspace. We then address the issue of energy consumption
in sensor networks, thus showing how to optimize the network topology in order
to minimize the energy necessary to achieve a global consensus. Finally, we
address the problem of matching the topology of the network to the graph

Distributed Detection and Estimation in Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are typically formed by a large number of densely deployed, spatially distributed sensors with limited sensing, computing, and communication capabilities that cooperate with each other to achieve a common goal. In this dissertation, we investigate the problem of distributed detection, classification, estimation, and localization in WSNs. In this context, the sensors observe the conditions of their surrounding environment, locally process their noisy observations, and send the processed data to a central entity, known as the fusion center (FC), through parallel communication channels corrupted by fading and additive noise. The FC will then combine the received information from the sensors to make a global inference about the underlying phenomenon, which can be either the detection or classification of a discrete variable or the estimation of a continuous one.;In the domain of distributed detection and classification, we propose a novel scheme that enables the FC to make a multi-hypothesis classification of an underlying hypothesis using only binary detections of spatially distributed sensors. This goal is achieved by exploiting the relationship between the influence fields characterizing different hypotheses and the accumulated noisy versions of local binary decisions as received by the FC, where the influence field of a hypothesis is defined as the spatial region in its surrounding in which it can be sensed using some sensing modality. In the realm of distributed estimation and localization, we make four main contributions: (a) We first formulate a general framework that estimates a vector of parameters associated with a deterministic function using spatially distributed noisy samples of the function for both analog and digital local processing schemes. ( b) We consider the estimation of a scalar, random signal at the FC and derive an optimal power-allocation scheme that assigns the optimal local amplification gains to the sensors performing analog local processing. The objective of this optimized power allocation is to minimize the L 2-norm of the vector of local transmission powers, given a maximum estimation distortion at the FC. We also propose a variant of this scheme that uses a limited-feedback strategy to eliminate the requirement of perfect feedback of the instantaneous channel fading coefficients from the FC to local sensors through infinite-rate, error-free links. ( c) We propose a linear spatial collaboration scheme in which sensors collaborate with each other by sharing their local noisy observations. We derive the optimal set of coefficients used to form linear combinations of the shared noisy observations at local sensors to minimize the total estimation distortion at the FC, given a constraint on the maximum average cumulative transmission power in the entire network. (d) Using a novel performance measure called the estimation outage, we analyze the effects of the spatial randomness of the location of the sensors on the quality and performance of localization algorithms by considering an energy-based source-localization scheme under the assumption that the sensors are positioned according to a uniform clustering process
On the genericity properties in networked estimation: Topology design and sensor placement
In this paper, we consider networked estimation of linear, discrete-time
dynamical systems monitored by a network of agents. In order to minimize the
power requirement at the (possibly, battery-operated) agents, we require that
the agents can exchange information with their neighbors only \emph{once per
dynamical system time-step}; in contrast to consensus-based estimation where
the agents exchange information until they reach a consensus. It can be
verified that with this restriction on information exchange, measurement fusion
alone results in an unbounded estimation error at every such agent that does
not have an observable set of measurements in its neighborhood. To over come
this challenge, state-estimate fusion has been proposed to recover the system
observability. However, we show that adding state-estimate fusion may not
recover observability when the system matrix is structured-rank (-rank)
deficient.
In this context, we characterize the state-estimate fusion and measurement

Thirty Years of Machine Learning: The Road to Pareto-Optimal Wireless Networks
Future wireless networks have a substantial potential in terms of supporting
a broad range of complex compelling applications both in military and civilian
fields, where the users are able to enjoy high-rate, low-latency, low-cost and
reliable information services. Achieving this ambitious goal requires new radio
techniques for adaptive learning and intelligent decision making because of the
complex heterogeneous nature of the network structures and wireless services.
Machine learning (ML) algorithms have great success in supporting big data
analytics, efficient parameter estimation and interactive decision making.
Hence, in this article, we review the thirty-year history of ML by elaborating
on supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and deep
learning. Furthermore, we investigate their employment in the compelling
applications of wireless networks, including heterogeneous networks (HetNets),
cognitive radios (CR), Internet of things (IoT), machine to machine networks
(M2M), and so on. This article aims for assisting the readers in clarifying the
motivation and methodology of the various ML algorithms, so as to invoke them
for hitherto unexplored services as well as scenarios of future wireless

Improved RBF Network Intrusion Detection Model Based on Edge Computing with Multi-algorithm Fusion
Edge computing is difficult to deploy a complete and reliable security strategy due to its distributed computing architecture and inherent heterogeneity of equipment and limited resources. When malicious attacks occur, the loss will be immeasurable. RBF neural network has strong nonlinear representation ability and fast learning convergence speed, which is suitable for intrusion detection of edge detection industrial control network. In this paper, an improved RBF network intrusion detection model based on multi-algorithm fusion is proposed. kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) is used to extract data dimension and simplify data representation. Then subtractive clustering algorithm(SCM) and grey wolf algorithm(GWO) are used to jointly optimize RBF neural network parameters to avoid falling into local optimum, reduce the calculation of model training and improve the detection accuracy. The algorithm can better adapt to the edge computing platform with weak computing ability and bearing capacity, and realize real-time data analysis.The experimental results of BATADAL data set and Gas data set show that the accuracy of the algorithm is over 99% and the training time of larger samples is shortened by 50 times for BATADAL data set. The results show that the improved RBF network is effective in improving the convergence speed and accuracy in intrusion detection
